I've just reinstalled HL on W7.
It appears to have installed correctly as I can get as far as the main menu, choose difficulty level, and that's it.
I keep getting a message to, "Install CD".
Obviously the CD is in the drive.
Any one else experienced this.

You're obviously installing the original Half-Life or GOTY edition since newer versions don't require CDs. I don't think this works on Windows 7 at all.

Did you have to make a Steam ID?
Does HL show up in your Games/Library list? Does it show "Ready to Play"?
You could try the Add a Game option and enter the CD key at that point.

Thanks for your replies.
No, It didn't ask me to make a Steam a/c.
I not sure were you mean. Games/Library list?. Its showing together with the card games etc, if that's what you mean.
Add a game option, again, not sure what you mean.

This may be far fetched and I dont know if it will work, but perhaps try copying everything off the disc itself, and then run the installation directly from your computer rather than the cd.
Also... old half life installations would put files under c:/sierra/steam/.... (or something like that) Maybe check to see if all your half life stuff is under a sierra directory. If so, I would think you could move it to the proper directory. amirite?

If you didn't have to make a Steam account you wouldn't have the Games/Library list I was talking about. And you wouldn't have the "Add a game" option, either.
So ignore my post. :)

Register your CD-Key on Steam.

Two things can be done.
You can attempt to register your cd-key through Steam and download Half-Life from Steam.
You can download patches for the original Half-Life retail that may or may not allow you to run the original Half-Life retail.
I know for Half-Life retail on Windows XP you must download a retail patch to get it past "Insert CD".
I don't know anything about your operating system though.

Thanks chaps.
I've re activated my steam a/c, how can I register the cd key through steam.
I notice should I buy HL through Steam, it dose not support W7, only up to Vista.

It works on Win7, too. Sometimes takes some tweaking, though.

Turn on Steam, go to the Games menu, and click 'Activate a product on Steam'. That should start up a wizard that will allow you to activate an appropriate game distributed by retail. Make sure you have the CD key with you as the wizard will ask for it. Also note that sufficiently old retail copies of Half-Life may not have a CD key that Steam will recognize. Furthermore, make sure you know exactly what Steam account you want to activate the game for, because once it is activated for one account, you can never change it.
