Hi all,

I'm ShadowRage aka Starg aka Steve! I hope you like the game and thanks to all the support you guys have given us!

I can see already there are a few teething problems. I just wanted to say I'm going to be supporting this game as best I can.

If you've got any suggestions / problems just let me know and I'll try and sort them out.

In the mean time, thanks again and have a happy time blasting to you fav music!!!

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve, I have bought the game an hour ago and I must say I'm pretty amazed, very nice piece of work! Just a quick question - do you plan adding more mods, achievements and other features?

Nice to see an active dev.

I saw your game (and the other game that goes along with it) back on the xbox indie section a while back, good stuff.

I think for the PC port some of the things you will want to add;

Support for more than just mp3, which I assume is just due to it being an xbox title first. PC users have a wide variety of filetypes for their music. Now I wouldn't expect to see FLAC support as the file sizes are way too large, but ogg support and the like should be pretty easy.

It also seems like some issues are popping up due to not just audio files being in the browse directories, throwing the app for a loop. Also probably another thing caused (or not thought about) by being a 360 title. If you could program it to just ignore any files other than supported files that might do the trick.

Controller support for more than just the 360 controller.

I will add more as I think of them, all in all though good job and congrats on porting your title to Steam! I hope it treats you well :-)

Thanks! Yeah - I deffo want to add more stuff to the game. Firstly I want to sort out any bugs though.

Also, I'll see what sort of stuff players want to see and take it from there. (So fire me a mail or bang a post here if you've got any ideas)

OMG I was surprised when I bought this game, Its like having a New Years Eve party in my room ^_^ .

I just hate the constant crashing to desktop, So sometimes I just sit there with my favorite tunes and enjoying the Light show like an amazing Screen Saver >_O.

Is there a slight delay while turning or is it just me? overall I love the game and I can see myself playing everyday just to chill.

I'd say the main things are some random stability issues, and the interface for picking out music. Looking at Audiosurf's music sorting system, it allows you to skip easier to different folders. I'm sure something similar can be implemented with time. Honestly sometimes the visuals get in the way of actually completing a level, since I can't see projectiles for all the lights, but that might just be me sucking.

Overall, it's a fun game that is perfect for 10 minute breaks, and it's awesome that you got it on steam. Good luck!

Any improvements on the PC version? I'm really tempted to double dip on this.

Also how long will the sale last for?

First off AMAZING GAME!

Have alot of fun!

Requests:
-in the Options Tab put a "run in window" box, so we dont have to alt+enter out

-more file types

-Online coop (not now maybe later...)*would be pretty awesome*

I bought the 360 version awhile back and when I heard that a PC version was coming out, I knew it would be an immediate buy for me.

Personally, I haven't run into a single issue. I've played both WMA and MP3 files without any problems.

Thanks for the fantastic game!

It's a nice game for sure though I do think the Warning sign for seizure should also be on the store page as it would be more fair. Just looking at pictures won't really help people see how flashy this game is.

I wear sunglasses when I play this game and I suggest you other people do the same unless you're hardcore. Though even then it put tears in my eyes after like an hour or so. :D

So I'm gonna gonna spend hours upon hours to play it.

Nice to see 360 market games coming to PC. Now I want that Contra clone or so.

Seeing that there are no stickies in this section I guess this thread could just become a temporary one or a permanent one. So people see that you are the Dev for the game.

If you want to unsticky this thread, just pm any moderator you see or me. Unless you get your own mod powers for this section.

Lovely game by the way, good fun.

Couple of little things
-It said I ranked up to 2rd Cadet rank or whatever (needs correcting to 2nd, not exactly a problem though)
-Also i'd like to see an option to run it windowed if possible

Very nice game!
The fact that it uses my music collection to build the game around (like Audiosurf does) made me buy this game.

A few things I'd like to see getting implemented:

Support of any USB gamepad that Windows recognizes, not only the 360 pad
2-player local co-op play with two USB gamepads or one gamepad plus keyboard/mouse
Support for more audio codecs like FLAC, OGG or AAC
Re-mappable controls
Explorer shell-like browser with a file tree, with mouse support to browse music faster. (It's really tedious to go through hundreds of sub-folders and nested folders.)

Hey Steve; awesome game! I love it so far.

However, I do have a problem. As I buy almost all of my music from iTunes, the *vast* majority of my songs are MPEG-4 (.m4a) files. When I booted up the game, I was disappointed to see that I can't play most of my favorite songs. Do you plan to add .m4a support anytime soon? Thanks!

Great game, I'm really digging it. :) One thing that would be nice to see would be the ability to tone down the flashiness of the visuals without reducing the difficulty setting; I'm not sure I'd use it myself, but I could see that being helpful for folks who're feeling a little overwhelmed by the level of visual activity in this game.

Great work on the game! However, every time I select a song I run the risk of crashing...once it even crashed during the seizure warning. ;) I'd provide details, but other peoples crash details that have been posted display nearly the same data, so I'll spare repeating them here.

That said, the game itself is so enjoyable that I'm willing to endure desk-pounding anger and frustration, and yet keep going back for more. That says something. ;)

Eagerly looking forward to a patch! ;D

A few suggestions I havent seen mentioned yet:

Window Mode (Alt+Enter works but you cant resize)
Different movement-firing schemes (Example would be position of ship should not affect current aim [like Geometry Wars])

I grabbed the game a few hours ago, and I must say I am enjoying it a great deal. For the most part, everything seems to be working great, but I wanted toss out a few things along with others. Overall though, well worth the purchase, awesome job with the game.

Random Bugs

Sometimes the controls stick and are unresponsive (rare)
Crashed once while browsing music on HDD
Freezes if I try to alt+tab right after a game (minor issue really)

Suggestion

Support for OGG and iTunes music
Support for music streaming websites
Ability to change crosshair color, I occasionally cannot find it amongst the lights
When I go to previous folder, do not jump me to the top of the list where I have to scroll through a long list again.

Looks interesting, but my music collection is entirely in FLAC - so I'll hold off for now - do get that demo up though, that should get some more interest in the game :-D (Perhaps wait until you've fixed any showstopper bugs/added some extra file support for that, that way people get a 'good taste' of the game?)

Looks great!

These. Granted, I'm playing with a 360 pad so the crosshair is less of an issue for me, but I had a lot of trouble finding it playing with mouse and keyboard in Nation Red before they patched in color options. I can only assume it's even more difficult for mouse and keyboard players in this game.

This might be a bit ambitious, but would it be possible for Beat Hazard to sort of build it's own database of the music on my computer, the way Winamp does? That way I wouldn't have to dink around with folders, I could just open a menu and look a song up either by name or by artist. That would be huge for me.

Only played for about 15 min so far and love it. Makes me think of asteroids on steroids.

Anyway, I'd prefer if you could have an option to change the controllability of the ship to be similar to that in asteroids. IE W/S=Forward/Back, A/D=Strafe Left/Right instead of just Up, Down, Left, Right no matter how you are facing as they are now. Some people may prefer that control scheme, so maybe a toggle option to choose between the two.

Only problem I had right away, is it is incompatible with the amBX light system. Unfortunately, not sure if it's the game or amBX at fault though. Turning off amBX just for this game allows me to play just fine.

edit: On second thought...after playing it for 2 hours...I would like to retract my wish for controls to be forward/back/left/right as I stated. I guess I had too much asteroids playtime before this game, but now I think that control style would just be way too difficult for this game.

Loving this game.

A few suggestions:
-Perhaps have the game catalog songs in My Music folder, and any other folders we want. The music browser is really slow to find particular songs, and it will work with my following suggestions
-Add a search function so we can just type in a song name to find our song
-Random song, sometimes i dont like picking the song I want to play. But also add a Dislike tag for the songs, if you dont like a song that is randomly picked, stop it from being picked.

Just a few ideas which I think will improve song selection, absolutely no complaints about the gameplay.

Hey Steve,

great game, it has some addiction potential :P

Some things i wish for a patch.

The last folder wich you selected a title, should be the one wich will open after finishing a song.

A quick search on your HDD would be excelent.

crashes on selecting some titles. for example Through the fire and flames on my HDD D: let the game CTD. On C: it works fine. But I also can select Songs from C: and some not from D: it seems totaly random.

A 1 sec spawn protection would be great, especially for Insane you were often killed by the laser and after the respawn instantly from a "yellow hony nut ring".

An option for selecting some graphig settings, f.e. Resolution, Brightnes, and mostly a scrollable bar for the sound option.

Hope I was able to give you some feedback

Like it a lot but it seems to have problems with certain characters/fonts. I have a lot of music by a Japanese artist who uses a strange format for their songs eg. "TREE CLIMBERS". It doesn't seem to be able to detect these songs at all.

Also, Japanese characters display as question marks. Probably not your top priority but Audiosurf handles this stuff ok so it would be nice to see it implemented.

Thanks, well worth the money so far.

All my music files are on another PC in my home network. I mapped it to my gaming PC just to be able to use them in Beat Hazard but I was not able to do so since Beat Hazard doesn't list mapped drives under My Computer.

Also unicode support is needed for both filenames & tags so that Turkish characters (also read that Czechs need that too, which would also mean anyone with no latin character in their alphabet) would be readable.

Hope to see these fixes soon.

Other than that the game is very cool, good job =)

Really fun game to play except 2 things that quickly become apparent on these forums: seemingly random crashes (seem mostly when leaving a song, going back to the music folder) and the load times for the folders, even if it's just 1 album with ~10tracks... it takes about 2-3seconds to load, using a normal 7200rpm sata2 drive.

Really enjoying this game so far. A few small suggestions though:
It'd be cool if you could see a menu that just lists the songs you've already played. That way it would be more convenient could go back and try to beat your old scores or try to complete songs that you weren't able to before.

The ability to remove the Beat Hazard album from the list when selecting songs. It's great that you included some music with the game, but most of the time people are going to be playing their own music. It would be faster if you could just take the album off of the list.

What bothers me a bit is how the volume is turned way down as you start out. So I thought maybe using an equalizer instead, making the music sound flat at the beginning, and as you collect the power ups the equalizer boosts the frequencies slightly towards the optimum settings. I think that'd feel better than getting the feeling you need to turn the volume up and down all the time.

Also, a restart song/retry would be a very nice addition.

RustySpork
04-16-2010, 11:39 AM
Hara, you can go into the Options menu and turn the music volume up, and the SFX volume down. I had to do this myself. I set music at 10 and SFX around 7, and it works great. Doesn't sound so quiet at lower volume levels.

No that's not my point, I know you can turn it up, but you collect VOL powerups that turn up the volume and increase firepower, but I don't think it's such a great idea to have the game adjust the volume while you're playing it, and thus I made that suggestion instead. It's kind of a turn off when you've collected the max level of VOL and then die. It ruins the intensity of it all for me.

Loving it so far, only a few problems:

1. Main problem I have, which I haven't seen mentioned before, is my mouse doesn't STAY IN THE GAME . I have a secondary monitor to the left of my main. Whenever I'm playing and I push the crosshair to the far left, my mouse appears on the secondary monitor. If I click, the game minimizes. Also causes the crosshair to "stick" where it was until I move the mouse back to the game screen.
Also, the crosshair can disappear off the right side too, though it doesn't cause the game to minimize and it doesn't go far.

2. Yeah, crashing a lot with certain songs. Some with funky characters, some without, seems almost random.

3. Graphical options in-game. Vsync would be very nice instead of having to force it.

4. Can't see the crosshair in mouse+keyboard mode a lot of the time. It's actually not that big a problem most of the time, but when trying to focus on the bosses it can be irritating.

5. Though I hate to compare it, the game really needs a music selection menu like Audiosurf. It's a bit cumbersome to get around with my 7-10 nested folders of music.

6. Not really a problem, but support for other music formats would be welcome. I have quite a few albums in flac, would be nice to see that and other formats added.

Whew, now that that is out of the way, nice job! I love the game, seizure inducing flashing included, a heck of a lot. Totally worth it, and with an active dev it appears it'll only get better from here on out. With how new the game is, it's obvious it'll have rough edges. I hope you keep it up until it really shines!

This is an amazing game, and it matches the music incredibly well - nothing like having a huge boss appear right at the beginning of a guitar solo. Kudos for that! However, there are a few problems, though most have been mentioned.

1: The game crashes. A LOT. Click a button? Crash. Open a menu? Crash. Clear a level? Crash.
2: More filetypes! .m4a is the main iTunes format, so 98% of my music library can't be played, which is... kind of... a bummer.
3: The volume could start a little louder. While collecting volume powerups is cool, i feel the default volume could be boosted a bit. Either that, or increase the VOL spawn chance from comets at the beginnings of songs, so people can get some sound going.
4: Unicode support would be nice.
5: Better folder browsing system. The one that is there right now is kinda clunky.

Otherwise, this is a tremendous game, and i love it. :)

EDIT: I just realized that AudioSurf has last.fm support. I didn't even know that games could have that. Is that something you're planning on adding? It would rock, although it might be a bit hard to code in, i guess.

More suggestions & requests:

Add a proper "search while typing" function.
--Right now, it only searches for the first letter, which isn't enough for the 500+ different artists.
Disable searching on floppy drives.
--Right now, whenever I search, I get a ~2 second delay because the game tries to search on my floppy drive and I can hear that typical floppy sound. It's the same as if you would click on an empty floppy drive in Windows Explorer.
Just remove floppy drives from the search. Not even a single average MP3 file would fit on a diskette anyway.
Support the 'backspace' key to act as 'one folder up'.
Support the 'Page up' and 'Page down' keys to quickly through folders.
Support the 'Home' and 'End' keys to move even quicker

We had the crosshair-colorswitch-suggestion before because of it getting lost in the flashing lights more than too often.

How about the crosshair always takes a color which is in contrast to the background-color? Like on a black background (start) it'd be white/bright while in total chaos of yellow-redness (where the yellowish crosshair often gets lost in colors) it'd for example go blue/black or something which makes it stand out.

Controller support for more than just the 360 controller.

Yes please, there was no pc demo for this game, so I went and tried it on my Xbox 360, not even halfway through the first song I was sold, but when I got it on the pc I realized this played a bit better with a controller (and I only have wireless xbox 360 controllers) I do however, have a perfectly good pc gamepad, so please do consider it.

Hey just bought the game for me and couple of friends. Enjoying it so far. Needs a lot more polish to really surpass audio surf but it's got a lot of potential.

I know it's a big ask but is it possible to include support for midi files? I mean there 900mb archive of free midis from everyones favourite games right here http://vgmusic.com/ (close to 30,000 tracks) and it would be great to be able to play them in game.
(Before anyone says it, yes you can convert them to MP3's but thats a pain in the ♥♥♥, takes forever and converts 900mb archive into an archive of lower quality music over a terabyte in size. Hardly an ideal solution)

A bit more variety in the enemy ships that spawn and some more picks up certainly wouldn't hurt either (yeah that's a given, more content never hurts).

Anyway along with polish (particularly on the menu, and balancing for the ranking up) those are the two changes that would make the biggest difference to me if you wanted to improve the game (Once you get bugs sorted of course). Might even buy it as a gift for a few more of my friends (Not an empty promise).

Also just FYI I had a crash to desktop on the main menu when I was on it for long enough for the background song to finish playing.

Addendum: Minor bug. After getting the rank "Officer 3rd Class" which increases your extra lives to 3, in the very next song I played, I died once, finished the song and got the "Perfect" achievement. So clearly you get the achievement if you have 2 or more extra lives in reserve at the end of the song rather then complete the song without dying. :-p

After reading the above posts, the first thing that came to mind is "Welcome to the world of PC game development". Only half joking but seriously, if you continue to support the PC version of your game then I predict a sleeper hit here. Just make sure you don't do what the developer of Rag Doll Kung Fu did and make a bunch of promises to you customers and then not deliver.

I assume most of these will have been suggested already but heres some suggestions anyway :)

-Search whilst typing (Just being able to skip to the letter isnt enough when I have 100GB+ of mp3s)
-Restart song option in pause menu
-Game doesnt recognise songs with non-latin alphabet characters

They're the three main things I noticed straight away. Good game though, preferring it to Audiosurf atm.

Hi there, I really enjoyed this game. The only problem is browsing your music folders, mine are spread all over the computer since I'm using iTunes. Can you enable an option that does this: Every folder you've played music from is added to a Beat Hazzard "your music" folder or something like that? It's kinda annoying to go through five folders, play some songs, go back, five other folders and so on. But yeah, this is hardcore and it's the first time I've really seen why there's a seizure warning.
Cheers :D

Thanks for all the comments and great feedback. I'm slowly reading though them all and making notes :)
My priority atm the moment is to kill any bugs though!
After that I'll look at adding some goodies !!! wooo - more fun!

The only problem I'm having really is a high amount of crashing when trying to select songs through my external HDD. You guys did a very good job on this game I was playing it till my eyes started watering lol. Hope you add new content to the game because I get glued to games that get new content (e.g. TF2).

Awesome game =D

It would be nice to have a Vsync option in the Options menu, and a Restart option on the ESC menu. And FLAC suppport, as my music collection is almost entirely FLAC (and I'm not the only one :).

Offline cooperative mode, and Last.fm support would be cool too :) although not so important.

Thanks for all the awesomeness!

Hi steve :p I bought the game as soon as I saw it on Steam, never hear of it before, but as I saw it was a music arcade with achies, I just had to buy it. Why sont you ask yourself for a mod status for this particular forum?

I think the only problem with the game is the slow slow folderbrowser. Take a look at audiosurf for example. Otherwise, I think this game is great. I just hae a problem because I dont know what to play since I have 20-something gigs of music :D

Reproducable bug:

Step 1: Select any song and wait a few seconds until it starts playing in the file browser.
Step 2: Browse to another folder.
Step 3: Wait until the song finishes. Here you go, crash!

Thank you Steve and all the other guys for this game.
Bought this game some hours ago, finished a 22mins song and some other songs on insane. Now I need a break from all the blinking lights :p

I will definitly recommend this game to some friends who also enjoyed audiosurf.

Processor: 2.0GHz processor + Graphics: 256MB of video memory.

I've tested it (just for fun) on Atom D410+GMA 1350, and it works just fine.

Just wanted you to know that game can be played at 1.6 Ghz Atom processor with no real video memory... (2GB of RAM used for testing)

I have an idea Steve, not trying to complain, i like the game i played it for an hour straight when i bought it.
I notice during the downtime of the song i'm skimming along the edge of the screen, and since the enemies randomly spawn in from the side of the map, that's usually when i die.

So here is an idea - have a buffer zone so you can see the enemies before they actually spawn (or at least have a chance to see them with all the pretty lights)
Also how about choosing the size of the play area? Or disabling the RSS feed...

Just bought the game and before I could even play a song it crashed trying to preview an mp3 file. Not impressed, not impressed at all.

My system specs let me play Crysis just fine so no worrys there.

My music folder is quite large and has over 70,000 mp3's, can this game handle that?

EDIT:
Just launched the game for a second time, clicked to browse my documents instead of going the long way to find my music, the browser didn't bring me to my documents it showed nothing.

I decided to use an mp3 I had on the main dir of one of my hard drives, I browsed there and on preview of the first file, it previewed the wrong mp3, it was previewing a different file which I had not highlighted. Then I scrolled to the next mp3 and it crashed. Theres about 10 mp3s in that directory.

Should I be asking for a refund yet? I want to play the game at some point.

EDIT2:

Well I managed to play the game now, went elsewhere on my drive for a folder with a few mp3s, all of them worked. The game is great fun.

I went back to my music folder which has just over 1000 files including mostly mp3s, but also some wma/m4a files too. I just left the game there, the fps went down for a while and then it just crashed after about 15 seconds doing nothing, not even previewing a song.

Something is wrong.

Hi Steve, thanks for all your continued work with the game - it is a beautiful game. For the record I have had no crashes, no delays loading files, no problems of any kind. I was pleasantly surprised with this game, even if my head does hurt a little bit this afternoon :P

Flashing arrows indicating incoming enemies on various screen edges might be a better solutions, especially if they can be themed to compliment the visualisations and point to the exact location the enemies will be comming on.

Also had a thought for some more pick ups. Augments. Optional pick ups that shift your power to different things while adjusting the graphic equaliser. Like bass augment that increases shot power but lowers spread, a treble augment that does the reverse. Or augments that use specific equaliser pre-sets. Techno/Dance pre-set that increases rate of fire at the cost of ship speed. Orchestral/Concert hall pre-set that increases ship speed at the cost of rate of fire. These perhaps aren't the best match ups for power up suitability to music change but I like the idea. It would add more variety and it would be interesting to see how the songs change with the game play as a result. :-P
What would be really awesome is a tempo pick up.

I did not see this game until today, but I played the demo on, I believe, PSN. So I bought this without hesitation. The game is GREAT. I haven't encountered many problems with it except that in my music folder I have another one marked ~New, anything in THIS folder crashes when it goes to preview or read the file, but the subfolders all work fine. Don't know what the deal is, but just thought I'd say.

Great game though, very challenging and addictive.

My only problem is that with all the flashing, I half the time can't see enemies/bullets. But I guess this is also part of the challenge, maybe? Dunno, but I find it minor.

Excellent game. No problems so far, except...

I would dearly like the game to support more audio files. I have 40GB of ripped and iTunes-purchased AAC (m4a) music I'd love to play with, and converting to mp3 just for Beat Hazard makes me very very sad. :(

So add my vote for that feature.

Seems like a good game, but there are a few flaws.

* Needs a mouse cursor on the menus. Using the scroll wheel is counter-intuitive.
* Too few file formats supported. MP3 and WAV alone are not enough. If possible, allow the use of Winamp or XMPlay input plugins for supporting additional file formats.
* File browsing system leaves a lot to be desired. An analogue of Windows Explorer would be a vast improvement.

Also, I hit a glitch, and now one of my files is marked with having a high score I really got on a different file (the game mysteriously started playing the next file in the directory instead of the selected one). Is there any way to clear the records on that one file?

As a temporary work around you can activate windowed mode by pressing alt+enter in game.

Oh cool, I checked the thread but somehow didn't see it in there. And the alt enter thing doesn't really work for me cos it takes up the whole screen even after that when I want something like 4 fifths of the screen

I was one of the folks that bought the game upon release on XBLIG. I subsequently promoted it to everyone I knew! Great game, glad to see it on PC.

Suggestions:

Option to remove news ticker from in-game, menu, or both
Better highlighting of on-screen elements such as power-ups, enemy attacks, etc
"Album Mode" return (with achievements) from the XBLIG release.
"Playlist Mode" where you can set any number of songs from any source into a single playlist.
New sorting options (Track #, Track Title)
Option for different mouse control scheme. Basically, change it so the ship isn't following the crosshair, but rather stays point in a direction and only changes when you mouse the mouse. For example, push the mouse left, and it rotates to look to the left. Move left, ship stays looking that way. This is a big difference from the crosshair scheme, which will change the ships orientation to face the crosshair.
Option for sensitivity of ship movement. Moving around is extremely slidy and quick on a keyboard, but just right on gamepad.

GregW177
04-18-2010, 01:10 AM
Just a slight note (although not really too much of a concern fullscreen) but there is no icon for this game on the taskbar; it just has the generic "exe" icon. I'm really considering getting this one on the Xbox 360 Indy market too, for the HD experience without having to worry about lousy Intel graphics. (even with those this game still looks completely badass though.)

edit: IMHO, survival mode seems to be an album mode, although having never played the XBLIG version (that'll change in the next couple days) I can't say for certain.

another edit: Is it me, or does the game automatically adjust graphic intensity based on framerate?

I love this game!!! Well worth the $7.50!

It's basically Asteroids + it's on crack + inspired by Geometry Wars + music library = IT COULD NOT GO WRONG.

Couple things:
1) You MUST add OGG, AIFF, AAC codec support NOW. No delaying please.
2) Have an option to turn on some kind of nice, bright, bold outline for both your ship and your cursor. It can sometimes get a little difficult to visually keep track of where your ship is on-screen, and making it obvious would make the game more enjoyable IMO.
3) Until you can get that codec support up, allow a user to select a folder and have the game show all the songs within all the subfolders that are compatible. Meaning, if I click my iTunes folder, it can show me all the MP3's in my iTunes folder instead of having to go artist-by-artist trying to find compatible music.

Major +1 here though, will be demonstrating this to friends so enjoy the free advertising :D

Hey Starg, I also think the game should have a bronze-silver-gold medal award for each song, just like Audiosurf and Geometry Wars.
You see, right now my only goal is to finish the songs. But if after finishing one I get a Bronze award, then I say "what a bummer!" and try again.

Also, particular rankings for each song would be great! But I understand this could take some time.

Steve,
First off, hats off to you. Awesome concept for a game and will definitely be on my hard drive for a long time.

My only request is that you add some sort of search support for the MP3's. I have over 4000+ in one folder and it takes forever for the game to index them, then having to scroll down to a particular song. Would be nice if it were more like a windows search box.

Also, the games lists them by song name first, then artist name. That really should be reversed. I like the way you can type in the letter and jump to it, but it should be sorted by artist allowing for faster retrieval of a song. And finally, it seems like you can only hit one key and get to a letter. Having the ability to type "aer" quickly and go right to Aerosmith, or "led" and get to Led Zeppelin would be a BIG plus.

Again, don't let all this griping take away from the fact that the game is AWESOME. Now, on that note, I'm off to play more Beat Hazard. :D

Thanks again!
Stew

How would the song work though? Like how would both of you play the same song at the same time?
It would have to be very lag free I suppouse, no?
Probably send the other user the mp3 before the match, which would take about a minute at the very least over a normal DSL/cable connection, and then play the match? But it would have to send the coordinates of every unit rather lag free, since it is a fast paced game, from what I understand.

Also, support of Last.fm would be nice :)

I definitely support this, but first it would be necessary to get the game to recognize accented characters and foreign alphabets in song titles/artist names.

Every other song I play has an umlaut in the artist name or the info's in Cyrillic... so it wouldn't Scrobble right to last.fm.

Other than this, I'm lovin' the game a lot.

Very good game but I would like the inclusion of:

Remembering the last known position when going through different levels of folders. eg. If I have a "Music" folder and I open a specific folder for an artist, when I go back to the music folder, it will start with the cursor on the folder of that same artist.

Foreign Characters.

When in the menu, it should show the current song playing in the background.

Ability to customise graphics (I think the game scales automatically) so stuff like resolution, windowed, v-sync, and other video effects which are hidden in the background. Obviously you shouldn't be able to "tone-down" the visual intensity, but some of the more basic functions would be nice.

I also encountered some kind of glitch where when I enabled v-sync with my gpu settings, the screen would flicker during a song and the VOL and POW bars at the bottom became grey blocks instead of the cool particle effects. Is that the game scaling due to the extra gpu memory of v-sync or is that some weird glitch?

I love the game,... I bought it three hours ago and played it for two hours straight. However, I would like to issue a question along the lines of; On your screenshots, you list that it "has a cool built in visualizer. Great for when you just want to chill",... I however cannot find said function,.... Is this a plan for the future, or am I just missing this?

EDIT: My friend just pointed out the visualizer function,... as cool as it is, maybe adding a shuffle/random or maybe a folder option right to this so song searching would be a little easier.

Well, as cool as LAN or even online co-op would be, it sounded to me like solidjake was referring more to two people playing on the same machine. Hence the reference to one person using mouse + keyboard while the other is using the 360 controller. Anyway, local/LAN/online co-op could all be awesome.

3)Side Scroller = Win.

This is a very awesome game, and if you plan on updating it lots, this will be a purchase without the slightest bit of regret. There is lots to work on, but it's got great potential.

I'm sure you get tons of ideas anyway but I have an idea for Bosses: A key to summon them. That way: they won't destroy you in a quiet part of a song, and you can summon it at any "epic" part of a song (chorus, solos, riffs, etc). You can also add incentive to summon bosses (End song penalty for not summoning, extra powerups like right now, a small but immediate multiplier boost for summoning). It'll be summoned by charging up with kills and time, and you can stack up summons, so the hardcore folks can get 2 to 3 at a time if they want, or more.Either way, some way to call a boss rather than having it erratically appear would probably more fun, or maybe a new gametype feature.

My last thing I'd really like to see, is to have the base power of your ship not something so piddly on low parts. However, if you choose to keep it that way, then at the same time make enemies very weak and fragile. So even if it isn't heart-pumping for 10 seconds or so you won't be overwhelmed.

Hey Steve, great game! I'm positively addicted =D

The only thing I hope will be fixed soon is the crashing on every other song or so... Usually they work if I change the directory but I don't feel like scattering my mp3s all over my HDD just to find directories they work in xD
I think there's something about the directory name + the file name that produces errors. For instance I could not play a file named "Access 3 - Promised land (Squad-E Remix).mp3" while it was in the "F:\Sorterad musik\A\" folder but if I placed it on the desktop and browsed to it it worked fine.

2)Custom Ships- Enemy might be hard but as in your ship- that should be easy just a graphic isn't it? No animation.

You know this would just make the immature side of the players really happy, they would then make videos and spread around, potentially harming the game's reputation...

Great game, still really rough around the edges though. I basically agree with all of Dragonmaw's suggestions. For his Track sorting option I suggest binding it to like the shift key and the X button on the 360 controller. Seems minuscule, but helps with albums that have songs that flow into each other.

I'm sure the lag when changing directories has been discussed to no end at this point, so I'll skip that topic. I would like an option to show folders by default. Currently annoying when I have to click Show Folders, wait for songs and folders to appear, and then click [..] every time I want to play with a different band. Not the biggest deal but it does get annoying as all the pauses add up. I would also suggest making left and right quick sort alphabetically. I.e. so I can easily hold right for a second to get to artist folders that start with the letter S instead of holding down on the joystick for a full minute and then later again when I'm bored of that album.

And if you're still reading this, just out of curiosity what are your sales so far?

2 things I would like to see:

-LOCAL co-op play (especially since you already have 360 controller support!)

This is a great game, Steve! A thousand kudos to you, and if I had known it was going to be so amazing, I would have paid a lot more for it!

Will there be a Mac version of this game when Steam releases for mac?

One issue, well, the only issue I have, is that some of my audio file directories have a lot of audio in them, and it seems the game crashes when I try to load that particular directory. Nothing major, I mean I can just consolidate tracks to folders, but maybe you could work on making it less demanding on whatever it is when loading the directories?

Thanks again for this amazing experience!!!

Hi Steve! Congrats on the game, it's really good! I've played it on 360 and on a friend's pc. I'm thinking about buying it myself but i have some problems with the controls. I don't own a gamepad so i tend to stick with keyboard and mouse. For games like this (geometry wars for example) i use wasd for movement and the arrow keys for shooting. It works quite well.

I've been digging the forums looking for info and from what i found i have to either use my mouse or a controler. More key maping possibilities would be great! Keep up the awesome work!

Best game I've bought in a long while. I have to go ahead and echo the need for m4a support, as well as Last.fm capabilities. As for someone's suggestion of customizing the player ship, I'd say throw in a few different ship models (perhaps paired with thinner/wider ammunition fanning), and allow for selection of one or two colors in addition to the base grey, to make the ship stand out more. On Insane difficulty I will occasionally lose track of where I am due to the extreme amount of flashing, and it tends to lead to cheap deaths. I've even had this happen on normal difficulty once or twice. Also, it would be nice to spawn an extra life pickup every couple of minutes or so (though not in Survival mode of course). Three lives just isn't enough for really long songs.

Im loving this game, only noticed it on accident at the weekend because i was looking for something new to play.
I loved audiosurf and this looked interesting. Bought it and just had a blast and the effects dont bother me too much its nice to have something just insane to play with.
But i managed to get 6 of my buddies to buy the game so when we are all playing at the same time the constant updates are kinda cool.

Great work!

True!

Indie games are often the best!
They have a "fresh experience" that often the AAA+ games don't have.

That kinda defeats the purpose of the game. Learn to deal with the craziness. I did, so I'm sure you can too.

However, he's considering making it so you can adjust the visual intensity to your liking. Naturally, if you tune it down, you'll get less points, but such is the price you pay for being unable to handle the awesome!

Don't know if you've seen my thread Starg. I'm really interested in what you think about the multiplayer-idea.

My idea:
Two player Multiplayer-Mode.
Each of the two players makes his own playlist with his own songs.
The two players fight together in the songs, but the next song is chosen from the playlist of the player who had killed the most enemies/made the most points/survived the other.
Simply thinking about it makes it pretty addictive. Please make something like that, you will sell millions of copies!!!

BTW - suggestion for achievement : <Insert random name here> - Finish a song (3 min' or more) without firing a single shot (bombs only).

Oh, I've got a name for that:

Mad Bomber - Finish a song at least 3 minutes long using only Superbombs.

Really great game and runs like a dream :D but.....

I've just done 26mins in survival mode with no achievement, not a big deal as i can do it again but it is a bit of a bummer.

Is this a bug or was i just unlucky?

Honestly sometimes the visuals get in the way of actually completing a level, since I can't see projectiles for all the lights, but that might just be me sucking.

Ugh, that's EXACTLY what got me killed FOUR seconds before my longest song ended.

Fantastic game - I love it.

Unfortunately, I've come across a bug and didn't see an obvious place to report it - So here goes...

When the steam game overlay is enabled (but not visible), events are not being passed to BeatHazard properly. Left-Click, Green & Enter are all ignored. Pressing Shift-Tab opens the overlay and also allows the "backlog" of events to pass to the game.

eg: Start Game from steam <Language menu appears>
Click mouse <Nothing>
Press Shift-Tab <Steam overlay opens and Cold Beam splash screen appears in the background>
Press Shift-Tab <Steam overlay closes>
Sometimes (No obvious pattern) a single mouse click will work before you have to repeat the whole process

This behaviour started happening today. IU haven't made any changes to my system that I can detect (although steam/BH may well have auto-updated)

I've repaired my steam install and uninstalled/re-installed BH.

A workaround is to disable the steam overlay.

If you need any diagnostic/debug information please let me know

Regards

Basic

EDIT: After playing around a bit more it seems that in fact BH is only accepting the Steam Overlay hotkey as Enter/Green/Left-Click. All other keys/buttons work fine. If I change the steam overlay shortcut (To CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-TAB) then pressing shift-tab in BH does nothing but pressing CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-TAB Does <enter> as well as bringing up the overlay.

Very odd.

Only issue I've come across: I decided tho use my favorite song from my favorite band. This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8sUC-dsW8A , now, on the album version, it slowly turns into ocean sounds, to set the listener up for the next song. During these ocean sounds, one of the bosses appears. I can't kill it, because I don't have enough bullet/laser things to do any real damage.
TL;DR Bosses in inappropriate places is an auto-loss.

Other than that, it's one of the best little games I've played in a while.

Might have already been suggested but it would be nice to be able to search through mapped server drives. At the moment I have only about 500gbs on my computer so I have a server in the other room that has 5tbs where I keep all my music and movies and such. I haven't found a way to look through those folders as well so I've had to move some of my music onto my main computer... not a major issue but just a nice feature to add.

Other than that AMAZING game, I love it.

Been playing this game for 2 days now, unlocked the suicidal difficulty, really worth it. It's nice that you get the exact same ship attacks from the exact direction at the exact times each time one spesific song is played. For insatnce Mother Angel by Gamma Ray starts out with a crazy asteroid fest, which is amazing to dodge to get a huge multiplier, then comes a vawe from the right, and after that, a panzer wave from the left, which gave me a highscore of 4,5 millions. Amazing game, my power metal taste in music has given me some crazy flashes :)

It is heartwarming to see that you actually care about your players.

Good luck in the future :)

Hey Steve, really enjoying the game! The only things I'd really like to see added in this version are playlist support and shuffle; once those are in I think you might as well just focus on the sequel (if you're still planning on doing that). That's really the only thing keeping me from playing this constantly instead of listening to the music in Winamp.

Great job on the game, thanks for the great time!

Hello,

I apologize if this was asked before, but is there a way to navigate up a folder when browsing for a song? If I choose the wrong folder, it seems like I have to start my search all the way at the top of the hierarchy, which is kind of annoying. Hitting "back" simply goes back to the main menu. Maybe I'm missing it, but I don't see an option to navigate up one folder. Anyway, thanks for the awesome game!

Yeah - press backspace. Btw, also you can use page up/down. And pressing a letter will scroll to the next song with that letter.

I'm looking at adding a windows browse option in the next update. This should be a lot more usable.

I would love to be able to use the mouse in the menus, as in point-and-click. (Maybe a whole menu overhaul?) Is this disabled because of controllers or just hasn't happened yet? And if it has, then I'm doing something wrong.

Oh, and I'm sure this has been suggested somewhere, but how about a random song choice? Basically, you specify a directory, and it chooses a song from within.

while the windows browser does take care of sorting to navigate to a folder, it still doesn't help for survival where you want the songs to be in order by track number or something - unless I'm missing something?

I think the best thing to do would be to allow shortcuts, that way we can make some survival directories without having to copy a ton of data over if we want certain songs from different albums/artists (and all of you should have patched up that shortcut vulnerability by now). Maybe something to think about in the next release Starg?

Hi Starg, you mentioned posting if we have any suggestions. I have a couple of cool ideas. I know I'm a little late to the forums, so I hope I'm not just suggesting something you already heard a million times, but:

Suggestion 1 (For The PSN Version):

On the PS3, if anyone views your name on their CrossMediaBar Friends List, they will see the name of the game you're playing right under your name. Some older games will typically see just the name of the game, but a lot of newer games often display what stage or game mode you happen to be playing as well.

I think it would be cool if, for Beat Hazard, it also stated what song & artist you're currently playing. So it could be something like:

Rabite
* Beat Hazard Ultra: Playing "Regret" by New Order

Suggestion 2 (For The PSN Version):

How about a Platinum Trophy? I'm not sure of the requirements needed for a PSN title to have a Platinum Trophy (most don't have them, but there are several that do, like WipEout HD, Trine, Worms 2, etc.) but I definitely know Beat Hazard would be one of those games where it wouldn't feel like a chore getting the Platinum (well, unless you plan on sticking a bunch of online-only or grinding trophies -- those irk me to no extent.) Either way, a Platinum to aim for would definitely be a plus in most people's books.

Suggestion 3 (All):

Any chance of leaderboards for individual songs, like Audiosurf does? I mean, there's a bigger sense of achievement when you can see yourself in the top 10 of a particular song over being one of the tens of thousands who happened to rack up a huge set of overall points.

I know when I get one of those eMails from AudioSurf's Scoreboards telling me I've been Dethroned on a particular song, that gets me right back in the game to try to take back my throne, but I don't strive at all to get a higher score in Beat Hazard since all the scores are just lumped together on this huge list.

Which is a shame because Beat Hazard is a billion times better than AudioSurf, so I know I'd much more enjoy trying to reclaim my throne in your game instead.

Starg
01-16-2011, 02:25 AM
Hi there, thanks for the suggestions.
1) Yup, this should be pretty easy to do.
2) I thought all game are supposed to have a platinum trophy. In the Sony rules it says this trophy is automatically awarded when you have got all the other trophies. But yes, BH will have one.
3) I'd like to do this, but I don't think i will have time before the Ultra release. It is a cool system though, and I'd love to add something similar.

Cheers,
Steve

All disc-based PS3 games must have Platinum trophies. Downloadable (PSN) games seem to have the option as to whether to give a Platinum or not. I think it might have something to do with the "point value" of the other trophies, but that's just my guess. Either way, I'm glad to hear there will be a Plat.

Loving the new update. Didn't like it at first, but something happened that totally sold me on it. I was playing Hold Your Colours by Pendulum on Insane and got boxed in by enemy projectiles. Just as I realized how dead I was, the music hit a lull and the projectiles crawled to a halt. I had about a second to look for a way out, didn't see one, so I dropped a super bomb to escape instead of die.

That right there, sold me on the update. There's definitely more risk/reward, and lulls in songs don't just mean you're defenseless. I think it's added a subtle layer of complexity to the game's mechanics that's both intuitive and deeply rewarding. Well done!

Starg, I've been playing this game for months, and I've loved every minute of it. I've played mostly in offline mode, though, since I'm not a leaderboard geek. I have to say, the new update is fantastic. I purchased Ultra the moment I saw it was available and I love it even more.

Thanks for the DLC and great game.

I chose not to reset my scores/stats/whatever as I wanted to keep my progress. Of course now it is sub-optimal.
Please add an option to reset it later on, as it seems you only have the choice one time, at first start since the last update.
Or better yet, please give some perk-unlocks if you are already a higher level. Even if it’s just half of it (for every second level) as a penalty. !

I seem to be having a small problem. At least I am hoping it is a problem.

A friend and I are wanting to play together with the new co-op feature, but we do not wish to play any of the default songs, however instead one that we both have on each of our machines in the same location.

Is there a possible way that we can play the song we want to and not one of the pre-loaded songs?

We do enjoy the game, even before the Ultra expansion came out, but playing the same songs over and over could come off as rather boring.

One suggestion I would enjoy, if you don't mind, (I don't think it's been suggested already... although it might have..)

Support for video files, such as AVIs, OGV, etc. I know I have a number of songs as music videos, and It'd be cool to play them. At least have the audio track play (although it'd be *really* cool to have the video play in the background as you play. I don't know how many others would, but I'd pay an extra 2-3 bucks to add that feature to my game.)

Also... randomly playing the game from your indexed music would be nice.

You need to 'index' the songs before they show up in online. Do this using the index track option or by visiting the folder in the single player music select screen.

Songs that are indexed are premently indexed, so as long as you've ether opened the folder in single player, or used the index track option in the options menu, Beat Hazard will always remember that track.

You can remove all indexed tracked that you haven't got a score on from the same options menu as well.

I work in game development so I can appreciate all the hard work you've put into the game. It's all there on-screen for us to see. When we're not stunned by the psychadelic effects, that is :)

Gotta say, the Ultra DLC has got to be up there in terms of DLC... ever. Too much fun. The music matching is genius. GENIUS.

Hey Starg, what's your favorite song to play on your (insanely amazing) game? ;)

I'm kind of having the opposite experience of everyone else, having played the game for the first time in six months or so.

When I first booted up, I was met with a message "Hey, the scoring system has changed since you last played!" Not fully grasping what this was suggesting, I decided to tell it to "divide my score", rather than wiping my data entirely...

Little did I know this would leave me near the top level with none of the abilities or powers or difficulty levels I used to have, forcing me to play a much slower, less fun version of the game I used to enjoy!

Not much of a welcome back gift... :(

You can always use the pref command ResetMyRankToZero_NoReally; to start over fresh.

It's explained how to do it in this thread.

Hello Starg,

This has become my favorite game over the course of the last year. I just got into the top 100 on the majority of the leader boards today and wanted to thank you for the time I've spent playing. The only real qualm I have is with the micro-missiles attacking missiles; I got the missiles, take care of the blasted worms, and magnet annoyances! Not really a bug, just the only thing that really annoys me.
Something that I seem to have missed is the gold ship. Is there a way that I can achieve or buy it? I mean, I'm almost at 200hr played, that's gotta count for something.
Irregardless of missed perks this game is a number 1 recommendation for college students with a video game addiction, because it never ends, and you can get a feeling of accomplishment in less than 15 minuets. When you have to grind on an assignment, but would rather be gaming, Beat Hazard has your fix.
So, yeah, I still need to get into the top 100 for online:
Steam ID: Goddoll
Thanks again, happy new year, and keep on gaming.

Cheers ^_^,

Hey Starg, sorry to bother, but I have a pseudo-related question to your development. I plan on starting a serious project for making my own game come summer, and am pondering at the idea of implementing music analysis similar to what you have in BH.

I'm fluent in C++ and have just started reading up on Directx, but if you don't mind I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for music analysis.

Thanks for reading~

Look at the bass audio library and fft analysis.

Oh, bass audio library? Def will be checking that out. I found a little bit on FFT on my own, good to know I was heading the right direction there.

Thanks for the info, Starg!

I love this game so much! The only gripe I have with it is that when you play survival mode, it's kinda hard to play a continuous mix if all ur music is in subfolders, so I had to create a new folder and place all my music in there. I was wondering if there will be any sort of Itunes playlist support so I don't have to use extra HDD space for multiple copies of my music. Also along with this a shuffle mode so that way you don't have to play the same setlist every-time. =)

Look at the bottom of your screen more often! You can set the game to 'play a random song' or 'play a song I didn't play yet'. Of course, it will only give you indexed files.

Sorry if that statement confused you, what I wanted to say was in conjunction with the compatibility of the itunes setlist so that when you do use shuffle, it would shuffle the songs within that playlist in itunes. An example would be maybe if you are feeling like playing only EDM (and you have a specific genre of EDM set as a playlist), but not in the same order you have it on itunes. Beat hazard would shuffle your EDM music based on the playlist you have in itunes without you having to create duplicate copies in a separate folder.

I'm fully aware of the shuffle option in beat hazard, but it shuffles all of my songs and doesn't account for genre unless I create a certain folder for a genre and change up the list randomly each time.but this would take alot of space on my HD and doesn't have alot of variety of making a different list each time. Unless you can tell me a way where I can import an itunes playlist file so that it would create an individual folder on beat hazard, I would still have to resort to using my own method of duplicating my songs into different folders.

Any news one additional updates? More bosses, ships, etc? I do own the dlc.

I don't have any plans to extend BH any further. Mainly because of the difficulties in keeping fans happy, as some want the game to stay as it is and others want it to change (See turbulent threads when the Ultra update came out) Which is all fair enough.

The good news is that I'll start work on BH2 at some point. I've got a load of ideas on what to do with this :) I also want to do some other BH type games in a different genres... In fact I've got enough ideas to keep me busy for some year to come!

Can't wait, I'm a big fan of the game and this would probably be a Day 1 purchase for me. Still holding out a little hope for the android version, but if that doesn't come, I'd still be happy to see the sequel to this game. Good luck :D.

There will be an android version of ultra. That's my next project before moving on to something new.
I doubt I'll do anymore psn games. It's just too hard to do them. It's a real shame cos i love the playstation .

Re pre order. Haha that's ace! Thanks for the support . I don't think I could do this until a lot further down the road.

But now that you've got experience in PSN programming, it should be easier to consider in advance how you'd implement it, right?

Yup, sort of. It would be easier from a code point of view. But that's only half the battle. It's more down to paper work, submission hoops to jump through (twice), multiple ratings ( which take age and cost a fortune).

The list goes on :(. Most of which is unnecessary
