View Full Version : Portal - Bad Swedish translation

Portal's Swedish is really bad. For an example, "Oh no, somebody [has] cut the cake" is translated to "Oh no, somebody [must] cut the cake". It may seem like that's the same thing, but it isn't in Swedish. I mean, I could do better (I'm Swedish, so that's no problem)! VALVe should fix that, it's really irritating if you want subtitles in your own language and they're not accurate.

Finnish translation is bad too. "Maybe you`ll find someone else to help you" is translated "May [month] someone else helps you"

You might offer services, then. A LOT of games don't have adequate foreign language coverage, really. Remember too, though, that some mods are made BY non-english speakers, and this works both ways. :) The english translations from other languages sometimes have been ... pretty bad ;)
Yeah, the game was made by english speakers, so either you have to be an english-speaking player, or live with less-than-perfect translations.

it actually surprises me that they haven't just outright asked for help from the Steam forums on this anyway.

Unfortunately the site is down at the moment, but maybe this will help. https://translation.steampowered.com/
From looking at a google snapshot of the site it seems that it is currently invite only.

Sorry if I sound like a newbie (which I am in some ways in this forum), but how do I do that?

Email Gabe. If you open the dev commentary he says where to email, and from what I know he DOES read plenty of emails. Or, try and get ahold of someone in their legal department, or like that. I think that a lot of games would benefit from having actual native-speakers who DO clearly understand English fully as well, to be translating them.
Of course right at this moment they're all probably very busy gearing up for conventions and finishing off products but keep at it, I think. Myself I'd prefer someone who DOES think, "gosh that's a bad translation, it should be this other way" to be doing their work :) Especially if all they've got right now, apparently, is a computer program to do it.

Take the link in post #6 above (by Species8472).
It looks like you link your Steam Community ID to the page, and then you should be able to find out more.

No, it's a closed beta, invite only. And it's Portal I want to help translate, not Steam.

Then do what Zekiran suggested.
