View Full Version : Fixed Distance Cursor

How about an option or key that fixes the distance the cursor is from the ship so you can more reliably move and aim in the direction you want to.
I'm constantly losing track of the cursor and winding up with it way off-screen, causing me to turn slow, move improperly, and wind up dead.

The cursor can't go off of the screen.

Regardless, it's annoying to have an unreliable manner of rotating the ship with the mouse/keyboard.

I haven't bought the game because of the lack of this type of aiming system. I am terrible at games with this aiming system, but would buy it right away if the cursor could be "locked" a set distance from the ship, making the mouse into a "direction select" instead of a "aim here no matter where the ship is".
If you implement this as an option, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, even without the sale. :) It looks truly amazing, I love the concept, but I cannot get past the fact I won't be able to play it with the current aiming system. :(

I discussed this with a friend who has the game..
I argued that a gamepad is superior because you can change direction instantly by pressing down the analogue stick, while with a mouse you have to drag the cursor all the way below the ship.
And with the stick you always know which direction you're aiming because you know which direction you're pushing the analogue stick.
He said that with the mouse your bullets move towards the mouse pointer which makes them bend, travel in angles and such, not sure how that works but he said that a gamepad wouldn't be viable because of that..

For what it's worth, I find mouse aiming vastly superior. I do have times where I lose track of it, but it's not hard to pick it up again. I can't imagine why anybody would rather rotate in a circle rather than zip their cursor exactly where they want to shoot. This allows me to very easily focus my shots on a boss while bouncing all over the rest of the screen, which is priceless.

For me it happens that the cursor go right off the screen and i have to pull it back....

What it means is with a gamepad your aim is relative to the ship, but with a mouse your aim is relative to the screen.
If you move your ship with a gamepad, you change the direction you're facing with one stick and the way you are moving with another stick - But all that stick does is rotate your ship, it doesn't offer any precision with aiming.
When you use a mouse, you shoot where your crosshair is when you click. More importantly, if your ship moves, the direction you're facing automatically changes to always be towards the mouse pointer.
Circle strafing around a boss with a gamepad means simultaneously using two sticks - One to move, one to point towards the boss. With a mouse you just put your pointer over the boss and leave it there (or adjust slightly to catch different turrets or compensate for boss movement) leading to your shots "curving" towards the boss in extreme circumstances since your turning and shooting are perfectly aligned with the boss.
I guess it's easier to see.

Personally, I can't watch two things at once(dodging bullets and keeping the mouse over a boss or mob of enemies). It just doesn't work with the way I think, plain and simple. I fully understand such a control scheme is very useful, but I can't use it. Yes, I've tried practicing, it just never works the way I think. Believe me, I've been trying to play Bullet Candy(A geometry wars type shooter) for a month on and off now, and I always die really early on because I can't dodge and aim/shoot at the same time.
I'm much better in shooters where I can strafe while shooting in one direction, and move the ship itself to change where the bullets go, instead of having to worry/think about/watch where a mouse cursor is on the screen. The way I play shooters, I can't carefully dodge unless my eyes are focused on my ship. If I have to also aim at the other side of the screen to get any damage done, I pretty much fail.
If this game controls like that with a controller, I'll probably be getting it once I buy an Xbox 360 controller. I just can't physically "get" how to play these "aim at the mouse but use arrows to move the ship" shooters.

I agree the aiming is a bit annoying and not all of us have a Xbox360 controller.

normally yes, but I've had my cursor go off the screen, I had to stop shooting and spam the mouse around for a while to find it....

See I'm the exact opposite. To me it's just an extra thing to keep track of - which way my ship is facing. But it's no problem for me to avoid things and keep the mouse aimed at least in the general direction of where I want to shoot. To each their own, I guess. Having some like WASD+Arrows option probably wouldn't hurt.

I think using a gamepad provides much faster response times though, considering you only need to move the stick slightly compared to moving the mouse pointer across the screen.
The mouse might make it slightly easier to focus on one point, but that's only for bosses and I'd rather do that manually and be able to change direction quickly and have full control over the direction my ship is heading rather than having to look for a crosshair..

I have had my cursor go offscreen as well, it wouldn't be so bad if the crosshair was at least visible during gameplay.
