Just got done with a fairly long deathmatch session, after being fairly weak in the first round using the rifle I drew my pistol and simply ran at enemies, hip-firing them to death at amazing speed. Turned out to be much more effective than trench warfare since you can run pretty damn fast and flanking a covered player can easily end up with him not being able to shoot back because of the weird aim angle limits when covered. The pistol also easily outperforms the rifle in close quarters. The sniper rifle seemed completely ineffective because it's so easy to just run up to a sniper and pistol him to death.

What was even more effective was when I found the BFG (er, Manticore). Then it was party time, instakilling dudes with hip shots. Anyone taking cover? No problem, just shoot the ground next to that cover and you have a good chance to kill them. Or BFG them in the face when they stand up. The reload time is very long which is good, a BFG user is extremely vulnerable while trying to reload that thing but until he's forced to reload he probably already killed three dudes at a minimum.

so essentially 'nerf pistols and make other guns more effective'?

I think the pistol is fine at close range, it's supposed to be better at close combat than an assault rifle. It just needs to be more dangerous to charge at your opponent like that. The Manticore, on the other hand,probably needs a nerf. Maybe clip size down to two.

e.g. boosting HP and severely reducing HP regeneration (or even limiting it to when you're near an ambrosia barrel or killed a dude) would make the approach more dangerous because as a result you'd arrive weakened (can't just duck behind a crate for a few seconds to heal up) and the "defender" would have an advantage.

I'd have to see this all in practice really, havent played vs yet
