View Full Version : Request: Volume leveller

Firstly, I understand the songs are supposed to start out quiet. That's not what this is about. This is about my FLAC music collection and the fact that all my CDs seem to have been mastered at different volumes. Some are impossible to hear, others make my ears bleed. And because I use FLAC for archival purposes, I don't want to modify the files by permanently changing their volume.

Is there any way you could implement some kind of volume leveller into the game? I don't know how hard it would be to program in on your end, but on the user's end configuration could be as simple as a "Target Volume" setting in Options. (89dB seems to be normal for most media players)

Thanks. If it isn't possible to implement for whatever reason, I understand completely.

In the meantime, you could just turn down the "effects" volume, and turn up the main speaker volume.

Though I admit that doing that everytime would be a bit annoying.

It is. If an automatic leveller isn't implementable, can we at least have volume sliders right there in the pause menu?

I do like that we can preview how loud or quiet the song will be while still in the menus though, that was a good move.

A THOUSAND times this. I came here to post this exact request. The major differences in mastering volumes, and how the game uses it to directly affect your bullet stream, means I have some albums of very busy, noisy music that are unplayable because they're quiet and give me almost no bullets to throw at things. I know this is -totally- not Steve's fault, but it would be awesome to have a workaround.

Either some kind of normalizing, or a lower threshold of what volume constitutes a "fully on" bullet stream would be awesome.

Some sort of visual indicator like the chart Audiosurf generates before you actually play a song would be nice for the music browser, but to me this isn't as important as the normalization issue.

I am thoroughly enjoying this game.

download mp3gain. may not work for flac, but your songs being at different volumes is a problem that will bug you both in and out of this game, so you may want to fix it now.

It doesn't bug me out of the game because my media player (mediamonkey) analyzes the volume of my tracks (regardless of format) and levels the volume before playing them or copying them to my MP3 player. But because it doesn't permanently modify the tracks (I don't want it to!), it doesn't affect them in the game.

I also wish this game would read the song's intensity instead of what appears to be only its volume when deciding how the round will play out.

In the meantime I'll just make copies of the files and level the volume on those. Storage space is cheap enough these days that an extra 10-20GB used isn't much of an issue.

You mean something like what Replay Gain does? http://replaygain.hydrogenaudio.org/

I think Mediamonkey, MP3Gain, and Replay Gain all share the same algorithm. (Don't hold me to this, of course) If Beat Hazard could be made to read the volume analysis levels stored in the track tags, that would be fantastic.

If you rip the music yourself, you can level the volume and rip it again. Or actually level the volume and save it somewhere else. I have the same problem with some music being lower than others and run into issues. That usually solves it or at least helps.

Use audacity and turn it up :)

ReplayGain tags would solve this without having to permanently alter files or re-invent the wheel.

Hey,

I highly support this request! (therefor I made an account here!)

My Problem is, that I have one big folder with subfolders for my music (arounc 4000 Songs) and by playing a lot of them I know the problem very well and are often simply not able to complete a song, even if every shot would hit.

I've normalized all my songs on 89 DB by the use of mp3gain.

I don't want to change some songs only for this particular game - because when I do I have to copy them out of my library, adjust the DB with mp3gain, load them in the game etc.

Doing this for every song is just a problamatic task which needs lot's of time if you want to do this for every song (some songs are just fine in 89db some are even there a bit quite and so on).

So PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE implent a feature that fixes this!
a) Complex Analysing befor playing the track
b) Some sort of Option after starting the game to "lift" the audio line on a higher level for more bulltes
c) be creative :D

THANKS! =)

Not a normalizer, this would reduce the dynamics of the songs, but something like replaygain would be great.

Yeah, that was just bad word use on my part.

I came here to post the same request.I understand most original mp3 have more than 89 decibels but it is a real problem

Hm I have "solved" my problem by investing a few hours to lift all of my mp3 files up by +6 DB ... a pitty though.
