Game instantly crashes

Hey guys
I'm running Windows 7 64bit along with the Steam Beta UI, and a few of my games weren't working a while ago, including CS:S and HL2:DM
After a few client updates, the games seemed to start working again
The only one that's still not working is HL
The game starts up, and crashes every single time, just before the menu appears
I'm fairly sure the game used to work, and I even tried re-installing it
Is anyone else having this problem? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Hmm that's my last resort, thanks, but if someone can assure me it's due to the beta, I'll be satisfied and just wait for a fix

You may need to set up a DEP exception (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7169-TIAV-5361#dep).

Try what gorpie said, particularly if your old OS was 32-bit. Verifying the game cache can also fix some crashes so you can try that too if nothing else works.
