I really do suck at this game. I can't last long without getting owned... I'm not used to strategy or RTS games at all. I'm more of a FPS player. Any tips for an ultra newbie? And was it a bad idea to start with Napoleon out of all the other Total War games?

Yea its like playing Quake 3 if you never played a FPS before.
Total war games is for the experienced RTS player, got a couple of m8's who love Command and conquer but rly suck at this game. Try Red alert 3
or Supreme commanders 2 , then when you mastered that come back here :)

I'd say try out the tutorials if you haven't already. Other than that, set it on easy and keep playing at it. The great thing about this game is that you don't have to play to the game's preset victory conditions if you don't want to. After 1812, the game doesn't end unless you want it to, even if you fail to capture all the regions you need, so really it's an open-ended game.

Therefore, you can play it however you want.

Napoleon is a little different from the other Total War games in that it is based on a narrative, so if you play as France the game will try to kinda force you along a certain path. Try playing as the British or Russians. You'll be able to make peace with most of the other nations and from there you can learn the game's mechanics. Then when you're comfortable with that (and you have a pretty solid economy built up), you can declare war on someone.

It probably won't be as straight forward as that, since probably at some point some other nation will declare war on you first, but as long as you're not playing as France you won't end up with all of Europe against you.

That's the best advice I can think of for someone wholly unfamiliar with this game. Try to start out slowly, making peace with most and only declaring war when you have to. Granted, the game is a bit boring when you're at peace with everyone, but the idea is to get used to it first.

Hope this helped and wasn't just me being long-winded.

There's loads of players who put their battles and campaigns on youtube. It's a great way to learn tactics and the art of war.

I would recommend looking up a guy on youtube called 'PrinceofMacedon'. He's a good total war player who plays lots of online battles and shows them on youtube with good commentary.

Also there's players like 'JosefVStalin' and 'TheSageRises' who post their Empire/Napoleon Total war campaigns on youtube.

First total war game I played was Rome. Totally sucked at first and had no idea how to play. But just keep going and gaining experience and you'll get the hang of it in no time.

Good luck :)
