I just bought and installed max payne on my Windows 7x64 computer. I double click on the steam icon... mouse icon shows loading... nothing.
Task manager shows this:

The amount of my memory used never changes -- stays static. I have isntalled the sound fix in hopes it would work, but nothing. What's the deal?

Probably you are on nvidia driver 196.75, 197.13 or 197.15 if this is the case the game will just hang in taskman, without doing anything...
best to upgrade the driver 197.25b and 197.45 are working fine...

Download the new nvidia drivers, that will fix the problem.

It's odd for sure, but that's no help I'm afraid... please state your os, hardware(sound/vga) and drivers. maybe something comes up that way...?
killer_pizza: it should work fine with that driver, so I suppose something else is causing it.
for both: please run the soundpatch again if you used it, to restore the game back to unconverted, or use steams 'verify integrity' to get it back to unconverted. then try if the game would run in it's original form (albeit without most sounds)
if that does work, it must be the soundpatch causing it.
if it doesn't start then it must be something else, but I'm not certain what it could be...

Same problem, been trying to work out out, uninstalling/reinstalling for hours, changing compatibilities, deleting registries, recreating registries, moving files, no luck.

must be the driver, i'm afraid... it broke after 196.75 and only got fixed after 197.25 beta
maybe you should try some other driver from: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/ ... it's not really official but if it works... hey...

This game literally takes forever to start up( I have 2 or 3 others like this) and as the OP says it will show no CPU activity but after around 4 very long, seemingly nothing is happening minutes, it will start for me. Once it's finally up it runs very well. I need to install the sound fix though.

Like I said many times now every nvidia driver from 196.75 up to 197.34b is bugged with dx8, so max1 and max2 both don't work.
Desktop users: 197.45 or higher from http://www.nvidia.com do work!
mobile/laptop users: either downgrade to the latest official one before 196.75 from nvidia (seems it's 195.62) or use a driver from an unofficial source, like the 197.44's from http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/159-19x-series-geforce-driver-releases/?
these are leaked nvidia drivers from some OEM, nothing wrong with them, they're even whql-ed.

197.41 also works for 400 series.

I have this problem and I use an NVidia 9600GT with 197.13 drivers.
I'm going to download and update to the latest (257.21 - bloody hell they jumped..) and report back and comment if it's worked.

197.13 is in that range, so I'm not surprised ...
anything before or after that range will be just fine.

Max Payne now loads. So the latest drivers work. Yay!

Had the same problem. Updating my graphics driver worked, but I still had major problems with the audio.
For the audio I had to use a workaround: http://forum.alanwake.com/showthread.php?t=1120
Read post #8, and download that audio fix. Worked for me then I proceeded to play and beat Max Payne in a day. :D LOVED IT!
Note: Seems to only be an issue with vista OS. (I am running vista 64-bit.)
Hope it helps.

that's a very early version of my fix, the same fix posted as a sticky in this forum ;)
the old one will still work in most cases ofcourse, but usually the last version is the best one to use, it does more error checking and caters for many more scenario's including mods.

Running a Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty with the latest Creative drivers under Vista 64bit; I haven't encountered the audio problem. I am forcing it to run under Alchemy though.
