This is a list of all official Steam languages and their appropriate translators' group. Feel free to join your language's group. If you're a native English speaker, you can help out translating Steam into Pirate English. There will not be any more fake / joke languages.
If you think your native language should become an official Steam language, feel free to convince us / Valve. Scroll down ("Petitioning languages") for further information.

I've added the Polish group. But it would be nice if you could make the group public, at least by the time the translation server goes public. (Everyone should be able to join and get in touch with a specific language's mods and other users, shouldn't they?) I also thought about adding all the TS mods to that list, but that might end in spam, on the other hand it could be useful for feedback.

It seems like a good time now. Are you going to change all the groups' names and URLs so that there will be some sort of unity and a way to tell official translation groups apart from non-official ones? It would be cool if they all had 'Steam' in their names and would all follow the same pattern (same applies to the URLs).
Yup, it would be great time to unify names now. I own an another group that "holds" the official name in Polish version. (so none hijacks it, ho ho)

Well, you're other group's name is "Polish Translations", but as written above I think it would be appropriate to include the word 'Steam' in all groups' names, so that all the names are definitely not taken and that it's clear which group is official and which group is not. I guess "[Language] Steam Translation" or something like that would be the name pattern to go.

I don't want to dishearten you or sound overly negative, but you need to be aware of something: not even the currently "supported" languages are truly supported beyond the point where the Steam client and the store/community pages receive most the localized content produced by the translation teams, with a delay from several weeks up to a month or two.
We've been waiting since last August (and us being almost the last language group to launch during the closed beta phase of the project; the rest of the teams have been waiting for a lot longer than that) to finally see our game related translations go live, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon (or rather, at this rate it's not going to happen, ever), not even by Valve Time...

There is no definite number of members you have to reach, it's just that the chances of a language becoming an official Steam languages are higher if there are more supporters. But, in your case I think it's going to be very difficult, since Hebrew is a right-to-left language. This is probably going to be a major hindrance of getting it official, since it would require some programming work to support RTL languages in Steam and Valve's games, which I do not see happening at the moment. Correct me if I am wrong.

I was actually looking for some Hebrew LTR information a few days ago, but I could not find anything assuring / reliable about it, which is why I almost figured that normally, it cannot be written LTR...

I have added Arabic to the list of petitioning languages and I moved Brazilian Portuguese and Bulgarian to the list of official languages, since both were included in the last beta. That means we're at 24 official languages now! Congrats.
The folks at Valve should not forget to create a new Steam setup, so that people will be able to select the new languages, including Turkish, when they install Steam.
With the setup changing, it would be very nice to auto-select the language based on the IP, that should get some more people using non-English clients.

I have a question.

No we do not get paid.
However, you have the satisfaction of knowing something you translated is available for the world to see so that's cool :P
EDIT: I've noticed my post appears on some sites that don't agree with "free translations", so I've added a list of rewards i've received over time.
New stuff : I got the game CS:GO for free due the STS.
You can now get keys for TF2 drops when you translate strings. I've gotten 3 'drops' so far.
(2011) For a month before Christmas, we were given a huge amount of DOTA 2 text to translate. The translators who put up the most effort got a LOT of merchandise. (See pictures below)
(2012) I was given a DOTA 2 BETA key. The game isn't out yet, and it's what 30$ to have access to it right now?
(2012) Some people on the translation teams have gotten CS:GO BETA keys. The game isn't out yet, and it's in a closed beta.
(2012) I received CS:GO for free due to translations i've submitted to the STS.
(2012) Similar to 2011's DOTA2 free merchandise, the theme this year was "the end of the world is coming" We had to translate a bunch of text before the 21st. A few teams succeeded. I now have a Steam badge!! (http://steamcommunity.com/id/martinarcand1/)
The rumor is that we're also going to get other stuff, but no one knows yet.. It's still unconfirmed..

I'll be honest in saying Valve has considered the giving of Team Fortress 2 hats to exemplary translators, but nothing's been seen in that regard for months.
But the answer to your question's a resounding no. This isn't like the Team Fortress 2 Mann-conomy-- this is strictly volunteer work, mate! The translation server even goes so far as to automatically remove the information attached to tokens about who's translated it around two weeks after it's been translated.

Please, make it official! We would be very happy if you gave us the opportunity to make it work! :)
Can anyone answer, please?
At least, you could add the language to the petition section... ;)
Despite not being very well known, Catalan is spoken by lots of people here. It's the language used at school, the local government, signs, public radio and TV and we also dub shows and movies... etc. It's Andorra's official language too (you must pass a Catalan exam in order to become a legal citizen there).
Please, think about it. Thanks! :)

Yes. I saw an official language with only 22 members.
The languages that are still waiting and have more members than ours use unusual characters and/or are written right to left if I'm not wrong. Catalan only uses Spanish characters plus ç, l·l, à, è, ò, ï and ü (I think I haven't forgotten any character). Anyway, considering that Spanish, French, German and Portuguese are already implemented this shouldn't be a problem (no technical modifications to Steam and/or its fonts are required).
And in fact, we're still growing. Don't be surprised if the list increases. ;) I'm sure we can reach 30.
Note also that some of our members already collaborate with the Spanish team.

Valve could always consider advertising the STS, e.g. notifying people in the chat window. They're missing out on a lot of potential translators just because the majority of the users on Steam don't even know Steam Translation Server exists.

Yes, interesting idea! In my case, for example, I didn't know anything about its existence until I googled looking specifically for ways to translate Valve games (and I was thinking about ways to change the files given with the game copy, not anything more sophisticated). It was such a surprise when I saw Steam Translation Server as one of the first results!
And of course, Suomis, people in my group are there because they want to translate. :) People doesn't give us anything for free. Most applications translated to Catalan have their own translation thanks to volunteers like us. If not, we are often ignored because, despite our preference for Catalan, Spanish is such a strong language... I'm sure some of the language teams will understand what I mean.
---------------------
And only another question: how does Valve decide which languages they add to the server and how often do they revise it? I would really like to improve our community's appeal apart from getting new volunteers. (By the way, as I said, we reached 30 and we are 31 right now)

Uhm, I see... We'll keep trying! We've always had to be as stubborn as Chell when it comes to defend our language. But hey! I said we translate a lot of products voluntary but not all products! Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Apple and many others do translate their most important products themselves (Google almost everything) so it's not that bad. Oh, and remember: 9th most spoken language in the EU. It has more native speakers than 6 of the already supported languages: Danish, Bulgarian, Czech, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. Some of these languages are quite popular but if you look at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_number_of_native_speakers#5_t o_10_million_native_speakers), the difference is huge. Yes, we duplicate Finnish! And almost every civilized European knows Finnish exists. Well... Considering the previous statements, it's a quite popular language, isn't it? ;)

We're not talking of direct amounts of <insert nationality here> people, we're talking of those people who are actively using Steam. Finland has quite a lot of video gamers, and that's why there's no question about why Finnish is in STS.
That is why the group is created in the first place, to see if there are people to support the new language.

Well, Finnish is used by 0.45% of the Steam users, so I don't think our language is that popular amongst users Steam, even though we have a lot of gamesrs. I did notice, when playing Counter-Strike a few days ago, that almost everyone there did use the game in Finnish, which was a huge suprise to me. (Was playing on a Finnish server)

I think people are more "tolerant" of Finnish (and translations in general) when there aren't many... "silly" names translated, such as the weapon/hat names in TF2. Not sure why, but people seem to over-analyze the Finnish names instead of just seeing them as translations/references/whatever, and then compare them to the English names (which they might have already gotten used to).

Well, now I'm going a bit offtopic, but I want to expose a small history/language lesson related to my own case (I don't want to relate it to our petition, only a cultural fact);)
The same behaviour can be observed in some Catalan users when you give them things translated that they were used to see written in Spanish. It's a common phenomenon involving a dominant language (English/Spanish) and a weaker one (Finnish/Catalan). When a language is very strong and people get used to that language for things that involve high translation costs (= no translation to the weaker language) changing to their own language (in case someone finally decides to localize it) is difficult because it seems strange to them. We must live with that and hope they get used to the new situation somehow.
My experience (we, Catalans, suffered a HUGE repression from Franco concerning Catalan and had to compensate it later to promote again our damaged language) is that when the local language becomes the default option for those cases with a previous discrimination people adapt. But it's a hard step because nobody wants to take the risk if the government doesn't force it (and believe me, when this happens there's a lot of controversy for some time, until people adapt).
Just a little language/history lesson. :) Not intended to add pressure to Valve, of course.

Well, I understand your point of view and I agree with the fact that the number of real users is important, but you can't deny that, unless we are talking about a very poor country, both stats are related. And I think it's not the case (yea, Spain is in crisis, but we're not in such a bad situation and Catalonia/Valencia/Balearic Islands are some of the richest parts of Spain). We do have video gamers. For example, if you see someone with the [CAT] suffix added to their Steam nickname it's not because they love cats, it's because they're [Cat]alans.:) And many others don't even use it.;)
About people supporting the language, well... We have 30 members (and growing) waiting to translate. Spanish (a language with a very big speaker base) has a bit more than 50 members and only 4-5 of them translate regularly. The fun fact is that one of those active translators is Catalan and joined our group too.:)

And Slovak is quite different from Czech. F.e. we dont use ř or ě and Some words that sound the same have totally different meaning. (Pokoj - SK: Peace, CZ: Room) Also grammar is different in some places.

The issue lies not with there not being enough people speaking the language. It lies with how many people are active in the country/region concerning the topic. There is a difference between 8,000 inhabitants who all game and speak language A, and 50,000 inhabitants that speak language B of whom only 2,000 game.

I find the wording of the sticky 'welcome' post in this thread quite offensive:
-- my language is official (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Slovak_language#Linguistic_history_ of_the_region) enough for any and all products and services
-- why would I need to convince you? You want to convince me to help you with your effort, free of charge at that
-- if there is a language group and that group demonstrates movement (whatever that comprises), how does yet still luck factor into the selection process?
I am emphasizing the individual fragments of the context, but if it were not there, it would be impossible for me to do that, right? I would kindly ask you to at least reconsider, if choosing a less patronizing tone for the sticky message would not cause less abrasion.
Thank you in advance.

Frankly said, I do not see any problem with the language of the opening post, thus I will not change the wording. It is up to Valve to decide which languages they would want to support on Steam and for upcoming Valve titles. Languages petitioning in this thread may never become official Steam languages, it merely increases the chances of Valve considering them.
-- if there is a language group and that group demonstrates movement (whatever that comprises), how does yet still luck factor into the selection process?
There is no "luck factor", Valve is a company like any other, and adding new feature eventually has to be profitable to a certain extent, or merely "worth the effort". Valve employees have to spend time on adding a new language, it is not a process that works on its own. Once again, this thread is merely for Valve to have a list of languages which show greater interest in a localization of their own; it is no definite promise of ever getting a language on Steam.

That is the point of the Translation Server. :) Valve's latest games (currently in beta), CS:GO and Dota 2 are already being translated there. As for the audio: it's unlikely. I think it would cost them a fortune to record audio in ~20 different languages.
