Hi,
Im bought FUEL. Im downloading now but when im clicking on the "View game CD key" i got the "Failed to contact key server".
Any idea?
*Thats not the download problem. I got DiRT2 too. And downloading atm too. But i can learn my CD key on Steam.

Selvator
04-30-2010, 06:50 AM
Same here, I finished the download and tried to start the game, I get the same Failed to contact master server both when I try and start the game or try to view my Cd key.
Restarting steam doesn't work and im quite sure reinstalling won't fix a connection problem either so im not bothering with that :P

Also contacting steam support about this just in case it's not temporary.

Bump. Same thing here. Wrote to Steam Support, waiting for a reply now. It seems quite lame, really. Why do we need a CD-Key when buying and playing a game through Steam? Beats me. I have a bad feeling about this. It was far too cheap.

This is terrible.
I create an account just for support, first time I try to contact them since day one, and the email confirmation that requires a click to activate HAS NO LINKS!!!!!
I tried to copy and paste=no go.
WTF is with Steam. I can't even contact them regarding an unplayable product.
If this is a " ran out of cd keys problem" does anybody know how long this takes to rectify?
I hate this

It is the same like the Battlefield 2 issue. I bought the game but it does not run on my PC because of well known but unsolved bug. STEAM refused to refund me the money.

I am getting plenty annoyed at this too. I bought this this morning and it immediately had this problem after installing it (which went at 1.6mb/sec). I reconfigured my router, bypassed it, uninstalled it and am now downloading it again (which is going at 200k/sec WTF?) and nothing is working. If I click play right now, even while the download is in progress, it gives me the key error again. I want to play.

Join me in a class action... If Steam don't make this game available to their customer by monday, we should sue them. It's not the first time I had this kind of problems with games on steam... Specially with third party DRM... I'm really angry when I can't play a game I bought immediately because of DRM, when I can play it for free and without any of this kind of problem, if I use other illegal mean... It's frustrating, this feeling of being constantly ♥♥♥♥♥ by corporates.

Excuse me, I bought Fuel alone... ¬¬ .I know the game is really cheap (thx for the offers), but anyways, I'm not gonna play it till 3/4 days after I bought it. Totally unacceptable. You should predicted the impact of this offer on sales, and be aware of the number of keys avaiable. In fact, the main reason because I buy on Steam is the quickness to get a game, totally ruined.
I dont expect any remuneration, and Im gonna play the game the next week, but the last comment, about the other 4 games are awesome, really makes me laugh.

Sucky. No game until next week.

Yep, first Steam sells me 'Monster Jam' that doesn't work properly on Vista (virtually unplayable with the worst sound problems I've ever heard) even though theres been a patch out that addresses the issues for the 'other' version for the last year ... NOW ... they sell me a game I can't play because they ran out of serial numbers.

I don't want the other games - I wanted Fuel. Just like I wanted Monster Jam, but I can't have that either.

Just go on abusing then ignoring your users. Eventually we can only hope that karma will bite you back.

I think we should be dissing them. This is rubbish. They sold more than they had? You know we have computers that can calculate that kind of thing these days!

Maybe they do *read* the forums, but they don't always act. We've been waiting over a year for a Monster Jam patch and they didn't even bother to reply to any of the official forum posts about it. Activision pretend it doesn't exist and so do Steam.

I just see this as another example of awesome neglect for their customers when things go wrong. Thanks again.

Well, if they had stopped selling it when they ran out of keys, then all of us with this problem would have instead missed the sale entirely, and instead of waiting a few days we'd have to wait until the next sale.

On the other hand, they could choose bring the sale back when they get more keys in... but, in any case we'd be waiting either way.

I have a feeling they didn't expect so many people to buy it, because the reason it became so cheap so soon is because it got really bad reviews and not many people were buying it up until this point. I guess they finally found the price point where people decided "Well, for that price, how bad could it be?" At least, that's what I was thinking. :)

I was so excited for fuel. when I found out that ti was on sale it made my day! I waited the hour watching it download so i could play. My excitement was building by the kilobyte.

Then I got this error and my world crashed around me. I was devastated. All I've done for the rest of the day is sitting here continuously launching it just hoping. This ruined my day :(

I bought the pack knowing the Fuel key was out because I saw the product page with the warning before hand.

I understand a lot of you are upset with Valve, but the company responsible for providing the keys to the game is the Publisher, not Valve. The Publisher didn't supply enough keys to fill the demand of the sale either because Valve didn't ask for enough, or they simply wouldn't sell Valve enough. Also keep in mind Valve can't do anything until the publisher produces the Windows Live keys to distribute, which shows up on Steam almost instantly.

I doubt the publishers are working over the weekend, which is why it will most likely be early next week.

My point is you shouldn't just react emotionally and blame Valve for screwing you, when it could be any number of things. One thing for certain is, if Steam gets the keys on Monday, you'll be able to play on Monday. I know it sucks, but at least be reasonable.

Quite inaccurate as Steam sales are pretty automated unlike your average car sale. There's a huge difference between an automated system not being capable of handling all possible scenarios and deliberately selling a stolen car.

I have 1.5mbit internet, it took a lot longer than 3 hours for me!

Same it's only up to 34% and it's been almost 3 hours already lol...

I'm not that pissed off it's just a bit of a silly move on Steam's part to sell a popular game so cheaply and not be prepared for it to sell out in basically one day ;)

I was looking forward to having a game with a friend who got it yesterday and already has a key...

Honestly i think i prefer buying retail copies of things like this and just adding it to steam as a non-steam game... But then again who can argue at $18 for some of the best racing titles out there :)

Sure, that might be very difficult to create a system that compare "automatically" the number of available licence and the number of licence sold. Yep, comparing number has always been difficult, especially for computers.

But you can also argue, that they had this issue before with [at least] Prey and not learning from this is... well, I don’t want to be rude, but: stupid.
Additionally: There seem to be enough keys for DiRT2—and one could have imagined that most people might buy the Racing Pack solely because of DiRT and DiRT2 and seeing the other three games as a nice bonus. So, they should have had at least the same amount of keys for all the games that require one. Checking this should have happened beforehand.

I’m not mad, that I can’t play the game now. It’s handled at last and I have enough other games. But it’s just somehow irritating how this can happen to the download store market leader.

They definitely need to implement a better way of notifying potential customers that the keys are out. It doesn't seem automated either. Another thing is, when you buy a pack you'll never see their warning about lack of keys unless you click every individual product page. That's something I learned with the Prey incident you mentioned.

05-01-2010, 04:06 AM
Guys, will you please relax a bit? First of all, it's very likely not Valve's mistake, it's Codemasters'. FUEL didn't sell well from the start ( and rightly so in my oppinion but let's not get into reviewing the game ), so they didn't have a lot of keys prepared ( unlike CMR DiRT 2 which sold like crazy, still is, and they know very well they'll need all the keys they can get ). They just failed to deliver the keys to Valve in time.

Another thing - I'm guessing that all of you have other games to play for a few days until the keys are released. Or, even better, do anything else if you don't feel like playing. And, come on, you paid 4$/€ for the game and you're crying because you have to wait a few days? You can go buy the retail version, playing right away and pay 50$/€ for ( I don't really know what the retail price of the game is at present so don't bash on me if it's cheaper; even if it is, it's probably quite a bit more expansive than 4$ ).
You're looking a gift horse in the mouth, you know? And what the old saying is trying to point out - that's a big no-no. ;)

I bought this package for myself and also for a friend of mine.
and fuel was one of my main reasons to buy it.

and on the package page you don't see the warning that you will see on the fuel page....... THAT SUCKS !...

Even worse now we probably won't be able to play this game this weekend :S .........

I hope steam will compensate the people who they disapointed this weekend deal.......
It's their mistake for puting games on sale with to few key's to spare......
same as happend with prey during the holliday sales

I think this is embarassing for a online distribution company who only sell digital copy's ( I mean it's not that having enough game keys for a weekend deal will use to much space.....)

i am sure Steam will rectify it somehow, I have plenty of other brand new top tier games to try out that a bargain bin messup is not going to ruin my day.

I get upset at steam just as often as most of you. it's a true love hate relationship. but really , we are talking about a $3 sale on a game that's been out for... awhile. as much as this is an issue this thread should not be 13 pages long.

but for now it was just utter waste of bandwith and time......

so I ain't saying they should give us a 50 dollar game to compansate but they could make a nice gesture....

but hey it's theire name they have to keep up. as a good online digital store (and looks like they didn't prepare them self to good and for now we still payed with money and got nothing but lost harddisc space untill they fix this mess )

and it was still 3,50 euro that is not the same as $3 but hey you guys get evrything uber cheap there ( yes I am jealous)

05-01-2010, 09:31 AM
Well, I won't blame Steam for this. Think they just didn't expect THAT many to grab FUEL and/or the whole pack considering racing games aren't THAT popular (compared to other genres, at least according to my game collection).

And overall ... I'm able to order some DVD or whatever online from e.g. Amazon and then have to wait due to too many orders as well.

However I'd expect them to add a more detailed error message - something like "Sorry, we're temporarily out of keys for this game. This issue should be fixed one or two working days. Please try again later.". That would save them from lots of support tickets as well I guess.

Necronaught

The price they are offering for the game would be an indication that more keys should be available. The whole pack, which I never bought as I have Dirt 2 on disc, is a bargain and was a sure winner especially as it is the end of the month and people get paid.

Valve sells the game, sure, but Codemasters opted to distribute the game through Steam. As such, they should've been prepared to furnish more codes, regardless of what demand was like. It isn't Valve's fault.

Read the Sticky.

And as far as i can see the Key is only needed for Multiplayer:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2zfoga8.jpg

The key, for me at least, that I need is to activate the game due to SecuROM.

Activation process has been terminated

The SERIAL was not found in the database. Most likely the SERIAL has been entered incorrectly.

Press BACK to retry activating (please verify the correct input of the SERIAL) or press CANCEL to abort.

If the problem persists, please visit our support homepage for possible solutions: https://support.securom.com/PAunlock/?c=1200

This thread makes me lol.

It amazes me how much people will rage about not getting a 4 dollar game exactly on time. I mean sure I was disappointed when fuel wouldn't launch but it ended after like 10 minutes.

You will get your key just chill

Valve sells the game, sure, but Codemasters opted to distribute the game through Steam. As such, they should've been prepared to furnish more codes, regardless of what demand was like. It isn't Valve's fault.

Don't talk about fault no more! If you really wanna examine it, you'll probably end up with a single man, who has failed because he was disturbed by a fly in his coffee.

See, this situation is precisely why there should be a shotgun with anti-insect shells as standard furnishings in every break room.

No dude you dont get it do you? its about human rights. If i buy something i want it to work immediately. If you dont have a problem with this fact the my friend you are a slave of this society. I want what i give money for and i dont let anyone break my rights

So first ...

... just calm down

And If you REALLY thing this is an issue of "human rights" you should involve Amnesty International - I really hope you don't believed it this way.

I actually have the same problem. I do realize that a key will likely be provided in the coming days, but still. It's frustrating to have the game paid in full and downloaded on my computer and still not being able to play it.

Whoever is responsible should pay more attention to these things, the keys ran out after so little time, and it's the week end deal...

Hey guys. We have temporarily run out of keys for FUEL and more have been requested. You can still purchase the pack and play the other games. When we have more keys, FUEL will unlock for you automatically. Our apologies!

Look, while you're waiting for the key why not buy our other games? Brilliant sales pitch...

I would buy Dirt if I knew it would run, actually, or maybe Grid, but no Demo, so no buy. I've learned that it's a VERY good idea to try the demo before you buy a game.

What operating system you use?
I have them both working flawless on Win7 x64.

Mine's a bit older, Windows Vista, Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dual Core 4Ghz (total) processor, 2 gigs of RAM. HOWEVER, I've got whatever crappy nonstandard video card Dell shoved in here, so I already bought one game from Steam I couldn't play even though I SHOULD have been able to play it because my video card was missing some sort of draw feature. I'm not particularly computer savvy.

And I'm hesitant about either of those because I had to turn everything to minimum in Fuel's demo to play it smoothly, and it still lagged a bit near the water in the demo.

EDIT: To be fair, it wasn't really Steam's fault, the only place it said that only two brands of video card would work with it was on the company's website buried deep on one FAQ page and in one forum post.

FURTHER EDIT: To anyone that's played either one of those (Grid or Dirt) which might be better for me as a beginner? I played Gran Turismo 4 for an hour or two a while back and Mario Kart / Star Wars Podracer when I was a kid, that's about it as far as racing games go for me :)

All 4 of my racing games run fine on default settings.
Grid, Dirt 1/2, Toca Race Driver.
Don't know about Fuel yet though.
I would say it's most likely the vid card.

Hmm...Fuel's also built on a different engine, the others could be better or worse. Maybe I can check the dates on them or look for a demo from fileplanet...

In regards to your further edit, Grid was my first racing game.
Once I got an xbox controller for the pc, it was fine. Easier to control the cars with.

Oh, I have a nice game pad :D

And I just looked it up, 12.5G install for Grid - no thanks :p

I'm sure it's great and I'm not complaining (which would be rather silly, to complain about a game's size) but my hard drive's already eaten up with all my rpg's :(

I have got a Steam account in about ten years, I think, and I got 89 games on it (don't hack me please). I have never experienced a problem like this before, I have always been really satisfied with Steam. Am I just a lucky guy??

Space is probably the cheapest problem in a computer. Buy an external drive! Here is some from eBay:

Why does a Steam game need a key? It is insanity

Because the publisher of the game chose to use Games for Windows Live as DRM.

Which, incidentally, I didn't know or I wouldn't have bought this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against DRM and as I posted above I knew there were no keys when I bought Fuel today, but GFWL is about the only thing I'll have no part in. It's like Steam in its invasiveness, but done completely wrong. Steam is invasive like an awesome biomechanical implant and GFWL is invasive like a parasitic robot drilling into your brain... :p

Relax, people. Steam will get on it in time, just play something else.

Although I do agree, GFWL just confirmed me never playing this online ever.

Yes, it comes up, but it closes so fast I can barely see it.

EDIT: I think. You mean that window that apparently we have to do something to? I can't really see, it goes very fast and that message comes up that it couldn't contact the key server.

According to the SecuROM site, it states the serial would have been included with the billing info. I have no such key included in that email.

I never see any securerom messages come up.

All I ever see are these two boxes,

print screen...overlapped lol.

I did run the SROM in the folder just to see, if what it did ...nothing without a key....and no keys in emails....

On another note, I see that the charges I made made mid day Friday CST are still pending on my bank account.
Now I can't say that I bought something and didn't receive it, no, payments have been made. I am however playing 4 other games that are not even charged yet.

SO if come Monday the charges go through, and still no key, HEADS WILL ROLL!:p

I get passed that MP key screen each time & I click to close it. Then the play window opens that has video options etc. I click play & that is when the 2 securom messages come up.

I hate to say it but Steam has disappointed me many times in the past year or so. I am a strong supporter of it (owning 200+ games on Steam) but I get issues that just shouldn't happen constantly. Right now for some odd reason I can't purchase any games, Steam keeps declining my orders. However, I go onto my son's account and use the same credit card and it works just fine. Are they refusing to take my money because I spend to much or something? If I were an average customer I wouldn't think of going through work arounds just to make a purchase they would just lose my money. I think there is a very small staff taking care of the entire Steam operation and they just can't handle the workload. That is why they don't offer live customer support and you have to wait days for a reply when you have an issue. Sometimes it doesn't even get answered! As I sit here with Fuel installed without being able to play it it's just another instance of Steam failing me. If I didn't have so much invested I'd bail on this service and never look back. It kills me how many fanboys are ready to defend Valve to the death and they think they could just do no wrong. The PC game market is in critical condition and Valve is one of the only companies actually making money off of it. I really hope we see some major improvements with the service besides a new UI in the near future. Having issues time and time again just wears out people's patience and no matter how disappointed the customer may get Valve is still laughing all the way to the bank and that's just wrong. Now it's time for the fanboys to commence their attack on me and tell me just how wrong I am for being upset at their superheroes called VALVE!
