Can I froce DiRT2 to start in DirextX 9 with this one?

<directx forcedx9="true"

It was in the config file with the fullscreen things and so on.

If it's in the config file you sould be able to change it as long as the file is not set to Read Only.

I changed it. My question is, if this line is forcing DiRT2 to start in DX9. Cause thats what I want.

Yes it is. If you want to check in-game, see that you can't set water (plus a few other settings) to 'ultra' - 'high' is the max for DX9, and that 'ambient occlusion' is missing - this only appears in DX11.

Well. Itīs not working. I have <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <hardware_settings_config version="51">
- <cpu>
<threadStrategy parallelUpdateRender="false" workerMapFile="system/workerMap.xml" forceFeedbackProcessor="0" dvdStorageProcessor="0" dataSetMonitorProcessor="0" renderProcessor="0" updateProcessor="0" fileStreamProcessor="0" />
</cpu>
- <audio_card>
<audio mixing="rapture3D" />
</audio_card>
- <graphics_card>
<directx forcedx9="true" /> - <resolution width="800" height="600" aspect="normal" fullscreen="true" vsync="0" multisampling="2xmsaa">
<refreshRate rate="60" />
</resolution>
<gamma level="1.0" />
</graphics_card>
<graphics_detail level="medium" />
<shadows enabled="true" size="1024" maskQuality="1" />
<particles enabled="true" wind="true" dynamicRes="true" />
<crowd enabled="true" />
<cloth enabled="true" />
<postprocess quality="1" />
<groundcover mode="blended" clutter="true" />
<objects lod="1.0" maxlod="0" />
<trees lod="1.0" maxlod="0" />
<vehicles characterQuality="2" lodQuality="2" />
<envmap faces="6" size="256" forceBilinear="true" />
<water update="true" detail="1" />
<mirrors enabled="true" forceBilinear="true" width="512" height="128" car_maxlod="3" car_culldist="200.0" />
<skidmarks enabled="false" />
<dynamic_ambient_occ enabled="true" quality="1" />
<night_lighting volumes="true" lights="0" shadows="true" />
<physics environmentalDamage="true" vehicleDamage="true" />
<input device_type="auto" />
<motion enabled="true" ip="dbox" port="20777" delay="1" extradata="0" />
</hardware_settings_config>

What am I doing wrong? I still have Ultra High and Ambient Occlusion.

Very strange - just been looking online and found a few places that confirm my first post here - they only suggest that if the settings are still present then you have a typo (which I can't see in your post). It worked fine for me when I did it - my settings were capped to high and ambient occlusion went missing.

What I did notice after changing that setting and running the game was that it automatically changed the other xml file - 'hardware_settings_info.xml'. The following is the start of mine at the moment. Note the dx11="true" at the end of the snippet - this became "false" after quitting the game with forcedx9 set to true. Have a look at yours - see if it's been set to false. If not, and the file you posted still says true for dx9, something weird is going on. May have to try deleting your config file??

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<hardware_settings_info>
<systemInfo OS=" (Build 7600)" totalMemory="4185144" winPlatformID="2" winMajorVersion="6" winMinorVersion="1" isWinXP="false" isWinVista="false" isWin7="true" rating="3" />
<cpu name="Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz" speed="2808" cores="8" hyperThreading="false" sse2Supported="true" rating="3" />
<graphics_card name="ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series" vendorId="0x1002" deviceId="0x6898" vs_shader="3_0" ps_shader="3_0" memory="2797" rating="3" dx11="true">

I donīt have 'hardware_settings_info.xml'. I just have the:

hardware_settings_config

hardware_settings_options

hardware_settings_ratings

hardware_settings_restrictions

and of course the other xml files and so on. But I dont have the info.xml Could you maybe post your hardware_settings_config for me once here? So I can compare. Do you have any Idea how I can get this 'hardware_settings_info.xml'?

You have loads more xml files than I do - I only have the two (config and info). We are talking about the same folder - 'C:\Users\<user>\Documents\My Games\DiRT2\hardwaresettings' right?

Heres my config file (currently in DX11, but the only difference when going to DX9 is the forcedx9 flag; nothing gets changed by the game):

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<hardware_settings_config version="51">
<cpu>
<threadStrategy parallelUpdateRender="true" workerMapFile="system/workerMap8Core.xml" forceFeedbackProcessor="6" dvdStorageProcessor="7" dataSetMonitorProcessor="4" renderProcessor="0" updateProcessor="2" fileStreamProcessor="5" />
</cpu>
<audio_card>
<audio mixing="software" />
</audio_card>
<graphics_card>
<directx forcedx9="false" />
<resolution width="1280" height="960" aspect="normal" fullscreen="true" vsync="1" multisampling="4xmsaa">
<refreshRate rate="85" />
</resolution>
<gamma level="1.0" />
</graphics_card>
<graphics_detail level="high" />
<shadows enabled="true" size="2048" maskQuality="1" />
<particles enabled="true" wind="true" dynamicRes="false" />
<crowd enabled="true" detail="1" tessellation="false" />
<cloth enabled="true" detail="1" />
<postprocess quality="2" />
<groundcover mode="blended" clutter="true" />
<objects lod="1.25" maxlod="0" />
<trees lod="1.25" maxlod="0" />
<vehicles characterQuality="3" lodQuality="2" />
<envmap faces="6" size="512" forceBilinear="true" />
<water update="true" detail="2" tessellation="true" />
<mirrors enabled="true" forceBilinear="true" width="1024" height="256" car_maxlod="1" car_culldist="300.0" />
<skidmarks enabled="true" />
<dynamic_ambient_occ enabled="true" quality="1" />
<night_lighting volumes="true" lights="0" shadows="true" />
<physics environmentalDamage="true" vehicleDamage="true" />
<input device_type="auto" />
<motion enabled="true" ip="dbox" port="20777" delay="1" extradata="0" />
</hardware_settings_config>

Ah, I see now. Ignore that folder - your live config file is in the location I posted. The one you're looking at is probably some kind of default - maybe what it copies to your documents folder when yours is missing, ie on first run. Change the forcedx9 flag in the config file in your documents folder - this should work fine then.

Okay thanks man it works now. But I have a porblem with DiRT 1, too. Do you have any experience on this game? So I donīt have to open a new thread.

Cheers for the rep; glad you got it sorted. I'm afraid not on the DiRT 1 front - never played or even seen the game. You'll have to go and make that new thread!

Hi,
You need to change the line in the hardware_settings_config.xml file, not the hardware_settings_info.xml one (in your my documents/games... etc folder)
