Because there's no gravity and no friction in space, and because it appears the game uses real physics or close to real physics, the shotgun is pretty much the best weapon. It fires a wall of bullets with a pretty even spread that doesn't grow larger with distance, and there's no damage fall off (objects travel at the same speed until they hit something). Who needs a railgun that wobbles uncontrollably, even when attached, when you can just send waves of bullets at people?
If it is as good as you say, then everyone would be running around with it. When I played today, no one seemed to be using it.

If they bullets are spreading out as they come out of the shotgun, then they will spread out to be infinitely further apart until they run into something or reach the edge of the map.
No the shotgun is not overpowered, it's fun and useful depending on your playstyle, but I don't think it is overpowered.

I like the shotgun, I'm just not real good with it but I can get people from behind. My only complaint about the shotgun is how its the only gun that doesn't look futuristic at all. Its like the just took a shotgun from a local gun store and put it in space.

Now that was overpowered, what it is right now is perfect imo but we'll see how community feedback differs from what we've worked out during testing.
I'm sure more tweaks to the weapons will happen over the following months to further perfect a balance between them,
