keep the skill level low (lowest) until you figure out what it takes to win.

if, after 4-5 games of this -- and following the "Sid's Tips" and the "Advisor Tips" or whatever -- you still can't win, you probably are missing something. you have to know what it takes to:
- grow your cities/empire (including research)
- defend it
- crush your enemies, militarily or economically, culturally, diplomatically, etc...

post back specific questions and I'm sure someone will help.

another suggestion would be to play a team game with an AI partner and watch what they do. or play a real multiplayer game with a human teammate and watch what they do.

I like to specialize my cities. One may be surrounded by hills and I slap a forge in there as soon as possible then set it to "wealth".

I use this extra money to upgrade my stupid warriors to something better after mass producing them near my enemies.

I have one city, usually my first one, be the culture hub to try to generate great people, it works best near forests in the early game because when you chop them down, you get hammers to rush whatever you're building.

As far as research, I'm pretty successful getting all religions up to Judaism first, then sailing, then I head to currency. By then, usually I'm still not in danger of being attacked but it's coming. Then I switch over to combat research for a while and load my cities up with spearmen, axemen, and whatever specialty unit I can get.

If you are near any water, get a galley right after you get Judaism before the other civs.

I only fail if I'm Japan in the Earth scenario :(

My Jewish Japanese seem destined to fail with "Earth" no matter the strategy rofl.

Consult your advisors often, and examine the technologies and units they recommend to understand what their benefits are. It's a turn-based game so you can take all the time you need, and you'll learn much more by failing than you will by winning, so don't ragequit!

ah ok thanks.

well for 1, im just building my city in the middle of know where- where ever my settler is, so i need to move him to some hill parts to build mines ect ect?

everything i keep building says my city needs to be civalized or something like that.

also, i seen in the turorial that to get gold you can capture them little village things that a scout finds, is there any other way casue i cant find any to well.

thanks!

Typically I take the diplomatic approach as long as possible while continually growing my empire. Trick is to take/make as many towns as possible, as quickly as possible. I always have at least 8 to 10 workers per territory working on infrastructure (on auto), then another 4 to 8 working on resources.

As far as tech upgrades go, try sticking to improving your industrial and culture. I don't bother with any religious tech usually.

When you build cities try and make sure they are on prosperous land (as many coin/bread/hammer icons as possible).

i had a massive endgame army of mechanized units and was a bout to roll over my U.N. adversary, after getting the rest of the world to join my war. Then he voted for me to win diplomatically. The ai is sometimes intelligent.

Don't build up as quickly as possible. I've tried this many times in my early games ala Civ3 and it can send you to rack and ruin very quickly. You'll bankrupt yourself if you build too many cities too early. Plus, you'll be sacrificing time needed to build defensive units to garrison your cities (barbarians tend to notice this and go straight for your weak cities). You'll also be using commerce to generate gold for upkeep rather than pumping your science output.

Allow your cities to grow. If upkeep becomes a problem, start building a tonne of cottages to generate extra commerce. Turn off barbarians at first so you can get the hang of the game. Don't be afraid to trade tech, but make sure you trade it with every leader possible so you get the full benefit in relations/trade rather than have one of those weasel leaders trade it behind your back.

Think they'd prevented anyone from winning with horsemen since Civ 2. You could get early success with large horde of horsemen in Civ 3, only to get respawned civilisation rolling around with armours. Irritating.

Don't let your city grow too big in the early games. Build Settlers to reduce population size and keep your capital city around 6 or so, at least until you'd reach classical age. A big city would only invite more problems than solution. And without the more advanced political system, your big city would just be marred with inefficiency and poverty.

Expansion is the key. Try to pick up expansion pattern of cultural barrier when you place location of new settlements near existing cities. Also, observe the available resource squares before placing. Try to keep away from jungle, desert, large amount of ocean and tundra is possible.
