View Full Version : Cannot Start New Game
So I've never played Fallout 3 and I am really excited to play it. I got it off Steam and the install was fine.
I can get into the main menu of the game and mess around with the settings and everything, but as soon as I click Start New Game to start playing the game, it just goes to a black screen and never changes after that. I have to Ctrl + Alt + Delete and end the program and it does say it's Not Responding. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this issue? I'd really like to play this game. I've heard many good things.
I run on Windows 7 32-bit.
Any other stats you need?
I just bought the retail works fine, the odd crash now and then but still playable.
what i did was goto the fallout3.exe compatibility and tick disable desktop composition and tick disable visual themes.
Apply.
See if that fixes it for you.
Do me a favor and explain it to me like I don't know jack sh*t, because that would be the truth.

FInd it in steam games list.
Right click, select "Create Desktop Shortcut".

Find that shortcut, rightclick, properties.

Select the "compatibility" tab.
Select "Disable Visual Themes"; "Disable Desktop Composition";
and "run as administrator".

Close steam.
Run the shortcut.
If that does not work, in compatibility options also select to "run in compatibility mode" under windows xp SP3.

The only problem is, I'm not getting a Compatibility tab (http://imgur.com/sUTAH.jpg) in my properties window. You also appear to be running Windows 7. I'm not sure what would cause you to have a Compatibility tab and me not, do you?

Yes the shortcut you are using. Steam doesn't create normal shortcuts, instead it creates web documents. You would need to create a proper shortcut.
You can go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\ and find your Fallout 3 folder then do what OJ191 said on the fallout3.exe instead of the shortcut.
