Just finished downloading Torchlight on my Mac. I can load it up, but it never prompts me about loading my character from the cloud, and clicking on "Load Character" takes me to the new character screen.
Any one have better luck?

Anyone know a fix for this? I can't even start a new game while I wait for fear that it will delete the progress of my main when it finally does work...

Note on SteamCloud support - the Mac version DOES support SteamCloud, however our implementation of that is not cross platform. i.e. you can migrate your saves from PC to PC, and Mac to Mac, and they won't collide with one another, but your PC saves will not migrate to Mac and vice-versa. Our saves ( and all the other compressed files associated with them when using mods ) are not cross-platform, and we would have had to have thought of that a lot earlier to make it happen. This isn't a limitation of Steam, it's just how we initially wrote the game.

Thanks for the info. A bit of a bummer, but at least everything works as it should, I guess.

Thanks for the info :'(
I hope that somebody will develop a tool to manual convert savegames from windows to mac:)

If you want to disable the cloud I believe it can be done, but the problem is I don't know where the file is on a Mac.
On the PC you go to application data
(username)\AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\
and you locate the file local_settings.txt
In this local_settings.txt you will find a key named
IGNORE STEAM CLOUD :0
You want to change this to be
IGNORE STEAM CLOUD :1
This should allow you to save your characters locally and not have the cloud screw them up.
The issue is that I have no idea where this file is stored on the Mac version of a game. Perhaps do a global search for "local_settings.txt" and see what comes up.

You don't need to disable the cloud, the windows and mac savegames doesn't overwrite each oter

The saves are not compatible across operating systems for some reason. I hope that someone finds a way to fix that. But there is no need to disable the cloud, the saves are stored in such a way in that they dont conflict with each other.

I was excited when I saw Torchlight coming to the mac and just loaded it.
When a burly berserker dude greeted me instead of my Arbiter hunter/rogue character, I was worried that my character became corrupted cross-platform.
I just switched back to Windows and verified my character was still alive there. I was relieved and then saw this post...
I'm still happy that Torchlight is now on mac, but the lack of cross-platform character support is disappointing. Is there any chance for this or an import character feature in the future?
Almost want this more than multiplayer support... ;)

I now notice I've misunderstood the post :P
That will teach me to comment before my morning coffee!

Dang, this sucks. Came here to check on the same thing as y'all. Bummer that our saves don't transfer but I guess we can't get everything.

Im hoping that someone creates a mod or that runic figures out a way to convert pc saves.

Yikes, how unfortunate. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the Steam Play/Cloud combo. I, too, hope someone can create an import tool. Regardless, not being able to keep in sync will suck. It is understandable, since they had no idea this kind of service would happen, but you'd think they would be able to patch both versions to support it.

Heh, I just installed Torchlight and was also worried after I got a "Can't Synchronize" error, and retried without an error to see a naked Berserker that I'd lost all my progress :)
Glad to see that at least things won't be screwed up at home, but I was really looking forward to having things sync cross-platform. Ah well... at least I can play Torchlight on my Mac and uninstall Diablo II finally :D

Lame... What's the point of cross platform SteamPlay if it doesn't support cross platform Cloud sync? I'd assume that a save file would be a relatively easy thing to sync cross platform. It's sad that they didn't put in the effort to support it.

Holy ♥♥♥♥ that sucks.
I copied over my saves manually from the Windows version and they seem to work fine (and the mods synced through Steam Cloud and don't seem to be having problems as of yet).

Howd you get that working? I tried to copy over my save to torchlight mac and when I try to select my character in the load menu, it crashes torchlight.

Bummer. I am getting bad performance on my Mac so I wanted to try it in Bootcamp and see if there was any improvement, or whether it's just my computer.
Still glad it's on the Mac though.
I'm not sure what I did especially. I did start Torchlight first, and it seemed to do the Steam cloud sync (at the very least, it synced my mods, which I did NOT manually copy over), closed it, then copied the SAVE directory to ~\Library\Application Support\runic games\torchlight. Upon startup my characters were there though I did get the mod mismatch warning, I was able to play with no problems, play times appeared on my characters, my shared stash was fine, etc.

Weird. Everytime I try that, it crashes when I try to choose my character.

I did the same thing and now it works on my mac! :D
My 2 characters are fine and they loads without problem. I tried to play 10 minutes and it didn't crashed. YAYYY! :)

Bummer about Steam Cloud not working across platforms (at least on Torchlight). That would have been the ultimate icing on the cake.

What is the location of the SAVE directory in Windows?
Saves are located in your %appdata%\Runic Games\Torchlight\save directory.
Type %appdata% in start->run to access your application data directory.
Should resemble C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\save on Vista or Windows 7. On XP it's something like C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\runic games\torchlight\save.

Guys stop arguin on SteamCloud not working.
There's a quote from the devs on the other page saying the problem is not SteamCloud, it's just they designed the game's saving system not to be cross platform.
So SteamCloud works, just hope someone to find a way to make the saves cross-platform(i'll try the method posted in this page today after buying the game, can't wait :) ).

i simply copied the torchlight folder from the location mentioned in the previous post to my mac and it works perfectly.
so from:
C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\
to
~\Library\Application Support\runic games\torchlight
only thing you need to do is delete all characters you already created on the mac, or the cloud will sync the mac created one over your saves you just copied
this is just lazy from either runic or steam, there is no reason this shouldn't work as we all expected
i would like to continue playing games on my macbook pro while at work, the saves should just sync so i can continue on my gamepc at home
i send a support ticket to steam to inquire about this.

Its not working for me Mac -> Mac though either. I started a new game on my work machine, came home and tried to 'sync' the progress to my home machine and it says it can't. Both are macs, anybody get mac -> mac syncing working?

This really sucks... I was hoping to play on my laptop (mac) the same characters I do on my gaming rig!

the folder is called: appdata, its hidden by default, either un-hide or just manually type the name.
i mailed steam support who said that runic games is responsible for support
then i mailed runic games asking why it wouldn't sync and telling them i copied my save game. They said i was extremely lucky and copying games back and forth might damage my saves and destroy items.
Neither steam nor runic answered if they had any plans of ever implementing the sync between mac and pc.
Converting a simple save game between mac and pc should be very very easy. I wonder what their reasoning might be. If you port a complete game to a totally different platform how hard can it be to write a very simple program that converts obviously largely similar save files ?

After som googling I found this:
Found this info on Runic's site but this is for Vista. May be different for other OS's.
Click on "Start" and enter %appdata% in the search pane. Press enter.
Follow: AppData > Roaming > runic games > torchlight > save
You'll see a 0.SVT file in the 'save' file. Copy and save that to wherever you want to save it OUTSIDE of Torchlights file. Could be desktop, word doc, email, etc. If you're saving a second character you SHOULD change the 0 (zero) to 1 or 2 or whatever number you choose. Understand that 0.SVT is runics default so change the number to a 1, 2, whatever, but change it from 0 or you'll be prompted that "0.SVT already exists do you want to overwrite the file" which you can also do. Your 'saved' character file would look like 1.SVT. Just make sure you save the file where you can find it again. If you have to uninstall the game and then reinstall, go back to where you saved the file, copy and paste that file back into the same file following the path above.
If you are playing Torchlight and get stuck in a level, like on a ledge, doorway, etc.! There is a solution-
If you have a town portal, try opening it and going through if you can - If you're in a Phase Portal, town portals don't work. However, there's a handy console command you can enable. You can 'ascend' a floor (which will NOT mark you as a cheater), and that should get you out.
Same path as above, except instead of opening the save file, click on the settings text file.
Click on "Start" and enter %appdata% in the search pane. Press enter.
Follow: AppData > Roaming > runic games > torchlight > settings
Scroll till you find Console:0
Change Console:0 to Console:1
Now, when you load your character, hold SHIFT and press the ~ (tilde) key
A console should come up. Type ASCEND and press return. That should pop you up a level and hopefully, you should be un-stuck.
My personal note is that I used this ASCEND method and it took me back to town. I was grateful, after being hopelessly stuck. I wonder what would happen if you just typed ASCEND 1? That worked for me in FATE.
Hopes this helps some desperate Torchlighters. Finding this info has been quite a drudgery, especially @ WildTangent.

i got another reply from tech support at runic games about the incompatibility of the save games. I have to say both steam and runic games answer very fast to any support tickets/emails.
in the meantime i also noticed that although my main char seems to have copied over fine to my mac, my shared stash is empty.
anyway here is the email i received
||are there any plans to get this fixed?
||this seems to be a very small technical problem in the whole process of porting a complete
||game. many people who play the game are kind of stuck now or limited in their options.

|It actually ends up being a much larger problem because of the existence of mods - there are
|loads of different data formats that the game uses, and each one has to be cross-compatible for
|saves to also be cross-compatible. Initially when making the port we didn't even know that
|Steam would become available on the Mac - and then when we first learned of it, the plans at
|Valve were to have no cross-platform Steamcloud. That changed, but by the time it did we'd
|already completed and tested this - basically it would have required a lot more than reworking
|the save files, and an entirely new testing pass on the whole game.
|So, effectively, when initially porting the game, there wasn't much point in guaranteeing cross
|platform save compatibility, and by the time it became a useful feature, we were too far along (
|literally a few days before completion ) to go back and redo all of that work (not a cheap
|prospect, unfortunately )
|We don't have any concrete plans for adding this functionality yet - although it is possible, it isn't
|likely in the near term.
