This is a comprehensive list of all the current bugs in the Steam client for Mac. The thread also includes suggestions from the community (and they will be noted if implemented). Major bugs will be listed in this post, but please do look around the rest of the thread for minor issues. This list is for the Steam client for Mac only. Bugs for Source games should be posted here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=892) and bugs for third-party games should be posted here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=893).
If you are having specific issues with the client, be sure to check the super-duper FAQ (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1269939) or the Steam Support Knowledge Base (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_cat.php?id=81) website.
Bugs
Unfixed
A variety of problems and high CPU-usage across various systems (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1265330)
The 'fontd' process is causing high-CPU loads, and when disabling all third-party fonts Steam still keeps that process at a very high level - judgeFire (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14909523&postcount=14)
Notifications turn black before disappearing - archagon (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14918945&postcount=48)
New windows will always open in the space Steam launched in
Steam judges if you're away or not exclusively on your activity in the client, not activity in the OS - dirk0gently (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14955957&postcount=131)
'Add Friend...' on the Friends menu is not properly displayed (screenshot (http://imgur.com/qxLHD.jpg))
Typing glitch is still present where the enter/return key will not send a message but instead add line breaks; this happens because the CMD key seems to be stuck (so pressing V will paste whatever is on the clipboard etc.)
The text for achievements/friends who own your games when you mouse over them sometimes does not appear. When they do, it makes the drop shadow of the window do a funny dance. You can also mouse over them even when the window isn't active - FuzzyPuffin (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14909062&postcount=9)
The "Hide" function seems to work fine aside from one thing; whenever someone on your friends list goes in-game, all of the hidden Steam windows un-hide as the notification pops up - pimpsahoy (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14909582&postcount=1)
The server browser does not display servers that only friends are in; it displays a lot of others
Side-scrolling does not work in windows that are too small width-wise to fit content - amcw (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14909782&postcount=1)
Text hover-overs, such as the 'Group Officer' hover-over, act as their own windows and can get stuck in Spaces and activating the hover-over from their origin will throw you back to the Space it is stuck in (screenshot (http://imgur.com/JjLQg.jpg))
When the Screen Saver starts it pauses all current downloads. At that point, the large "Resume" button on the Downloads page is unresponsive - Thorzdad (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14912885&postcount=34)
The text for the confirmation window when attempting to log out of the current user session is not formatted properly (screenshot (http://imgur.com/nJd7E.png))
Fixed
All windows do not work with Spaces
Possible Fix (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14911750&postcount=27): Unknown error appears for some people (screenshot (http://cl.ly/5f76761baca04eb96082)) - cghp91490 (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14909229&postcount=13)
The main client window (e.g. Store, Library etc.) does not respond to the CMD+W command - robodude666 (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14908914&postcount=7)
'View Source' button does nothing (screenshot (http://imgur.com/PEOIJ.jpg))
(Login screen) does not work with Exposé (screenshot (http://cl.ly/b4fc390649dc72a29ffd)) - martijn-online (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14907930&postcount=2)
Various games and demos are available to download but then give the message "this game/demo is not available for your platform" - shx (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14910019&postcount=21), nozz (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14910066&postcount=22)

The Dock Icon looks odd, in comparison to all other icon in my Dock. It's too big or something (the gap to the next icon is simply not big enough, it looks cramped). It just doesn't look very "macy" (screenshot (http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7188/steamdockiconcramped.png)) - dapopov (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14921540&postcount=53)

"May I make a suggestion?"
I think that Valve should add, among the search parameters in the Steam shop, some parameters like "Games supporting Steam Play" and the possibility to search "games for Windows", "games for Mac" or "games for Windows and Mac".:D

Valve,
First of all, I Love You :3. Thank you for releasing a Client for the Mac. It's been a dream of mine to be able to play some of my favorite games and chat with friends on the same computer I do work on. I've been using the Steam for the Mac client for about 45 minutes and have noticed a few things that are out of place, not completely perfect, or missing altogether. Before I start, here's a link to a feature checklist thread I made last month. It goes over some features/requests I would like to see in the Mac client.
The following list is of noticed bugs, issues, and features I would like to see. They are in no particular order.
- The Steam client uses the same notifications that are seen in the Windows version of the client. Understandable, however many Mac users are accustomed to using Growl for their notification needs. At the least, if you don't want to use a 3rd party framework for notifications make your notifications about 75px wider, 15px taller and semi-transparent.
- If Exposé is triggered while a notification is on screen, that notification appears as a window in the Expose grid view. Same goes for Spaces.
- The default game directory is inside of ~/Documents/Steam Content/. It should either be moved to ~/Games/Steam Content or give the user the ability to change this directory.
- When installing a game, give the option to "Add to Dock" in addition to the "Add shortcut to Desktop" or instead of.
- When the steam client is the currently focused/active application (ex: chatting with someone, or have friends list open), clicking on the Steam icon does not bring up the Store (or previously viewed page of the client).
- A shortcut to bring up the friends list would be appreciated.
- A monochrome Menu Extra that gives quick access to the shortcuts to pages, friends list, and latest launched games would be appreciated.
- The Steam icon jumps WAY too high, and too frequently, when you get a chat message. Consider adding a small badge to the upper right corner and glowing animation. Something like Adium's. The icon should jump no more than a maximum of 30px up.
- A chat frame cannot be dragged by the entire header of the window. Only the small top bar with the title.
- The store feels extremely sluggish.
- The close/minimize/maximize buttons are offset too far into the window. Moving them 7 px to the left, and 4 pixels up would resolve this issue.
- Might not be specific to the Mac client, but the gradient in the scroll bar is too harsh. There shouldn't be a gradient in the scrollbar altogether. The arrows are also too rectangular, though that's livable.
- The client itself doesn't respond to cmd+w to close the window.
That's about it for now.. I'll add more as I notice things out of place.
Keep up the fantastic work!
Cheers,
-robodude666
Logging in on steam on mac, it locks me out of windows steam - I have no desire to play the same games on the two platforms, so couldn't it be possible to use the same account on two machines at once, just not the same games at the same time?

Here are my bugs/issues. My apologies if any of these are repeats.
Things that are annoying and should be fixed right away
-The non-standard open dialog to import non-steam games is a pain to use. Also, for some inexplicable reason, it shows invisible files. Please use the standard interface.
-Steam overlay for non-steam games is very much a hit-or-miss. In the non-steam tales from monkey island, the cursor doesn't show. In Halo, the game doesn't pause and the camera goes around and around. Doesn't appear at all in Starcraft II.
Bugs, but not annoying ones
--The text for achievements/friends who own your games when you mouse over them sometimes does not appear. When they do, it makes the drop shadow of the window do a funny dance. You can also mouse over them even when the window isn't active.
--The dock menu with all the added options sometimes appears, but usually it's just the basic one.
-Sometimes the steam window will flash when I dismiss a dialog
Cosmetic things that should be fixed because it just looks lazy/Windows behavior that needs to be removed
--Stoplight buttons do not obey system settings (if set to graphite, they remain colored)
--the cancel/okay buttons are in their windows positions. They should be reversed.
--Traffic light buttons appear everywhere, even places where they shouldn't. Following Apple interface guidelines, they should really only be present in the Friends list and main window. For the little dialog that appears when you get a message from a group, the buttons obscure the title
--When importing non-steam games, the icon is very very small.
--When changing an icon, in the file type it says "program files (.exe). Should be removed. Actually, this whole window should just be the standard OS X one.
--In the interface tab of the settings, "Select which Steam window appears when the program starts, and when you double-click the Notification Tray icon" should be "Select which Steam window appears when the application starts." Also, "Run steam when my computer starts" should be "Run Steam at login" This is more accurate and follows Apple's conventions.
--"shortcut" should be "alias"
--a weird grappling hand icon appears when you drag the lower-right corner. Not standard behavior.
--Steam overlay popup that appears when launching a game should appear in the top-right, to match the other notifications.
--The button to choose an avatar pic is truncated w/o any text. But hey, it uses the standard open dialog!
--The popup to choose your country is ugly and non-mac like with the scrollbar inside it.
--Content should be saved to Application Support, not documents.
-In portal, the windows-style open maps dialog has a button that says "Open in Explorer," which will open the Finder. Should be renamed.
Things that would be nice at some point in time
-That awesome UI overhaul that was posted earlier.
"Get Game Artwork" I have Tales from Monkey Island, but the non-steam version. It would be cool if I could select this to import the full Steam icon. Similar to Get Album Artwork in iTunes.
-Growl support to replace Steam's own notifications.
--dragging and dropping non-steam games to add them to the Steam interface would be terrific.
--Integration with crossover. So I could install a windows game, and upon launch it would automatically load in CX Games.

dont show demos that are not available for "our" platform
Could you please elaborate?
steam crashes when "preparing to download..." dialogue is stalled -> force quit
Could you please elaborate?
e.g.: go to store -> choose mac game "galcon fusion" -> download demo
while downloading the demo in the steam client you see "this demo is not available for your platform".
this appears on other games as well (torchlight works of course). if a demo is not available for the platform (osx), then there should not be the option to download the demo.

Anyone else finds the GUI, esp. browsing the store quite a bit slow and unresponsive?
Torchlight, when I have selected "window mode', system froze and had to hold power button to shut down. Luckily after the boot, the game started in windowed mode. Quite annoyed by this.

-The drop shadows also do that funny dance when you hover over the three "game view" buttons.
-Maybe it's just me, but when I close all Steam windows with cmd+w, and then cmd+q quit any other application, the main Steam window pops up.
Also, this may not be a bug, but it's something I noticed. When the friends list is the active window and you click on "view friends" in the main window, it briefly activates that window and goes straight back to the friends list. I'm used to it first activating that window, then requiring another click to go back to the friends list.
Edit: One more thing. With the friends list window active, hovering over achievements and "game view" buttons alone will display their text and activate the main window without clicking on it. Sometimes the other way around too, activating the friends list window.
Edit2: (I should have been accepted to the beta. :p) The "group-officer" hover-over text can be replicated with the achievements' and "game view" button's hover-over texts as well. If you make any of them appear and show all active windows on the screen (expose?), they'll become a separate window.

- On launch the "Updating steam..." window stands there all the time without closing, also it's ugly compared to the nifty Steam interface (yeah we mac users are perfectionists, welcome to our world *wink*)
- Sometimes tooltips just stay randomly on the desktop even if hiding steam with CMD-H or sending it to the dock, i noticed that those tooltips are especially achievement-related or friendlist-related

My Steam client never actually shuts down. I shut it down and after a brief period of beachballing it closes its window and keeps sitting on the dock. Finder reports it unresponsive and the only way to exit is force quitting.
It might be a bug, might be a feature, but when scrolling over achievements the shadow under the steam window gets lighter and darker (light on achievements, darker when off.) This makes for a really annoying effect when your looking over many achievements at once.

The only issue I've experienced so far is while I was downloading Portal, I purchased Torchlight. This froze the Steam client to where I had to Force Quit. The download must have continued further than was indicated so I don't know for sure if it would have stayed locked or not, but loading Steam again everything was fully functional.

I posted it elsewhere, but this thread seems more appropriate. There may be some redundancies with bug already listed:
Traffic light (close, maximize, minimize) buttons are inconsistent. Almost all windows that cannot be resized have an (ineffective) maximize button and some that can be resized lack this button (e.g. the browser used to add non-steam games). You should enable/disable the button when appropriate.
Minimization into the dock should not be permitted for some windows, especially those that have settings and text fields. The yellow button should be disabled when it is inappropriate.
Some parents windows should not be closable or even activated when "child" windows are still open. For instance, closing the settings windows when the sound input window is open doesn't make sense, and acutally causes a bug.
Frontmost windows may sometimes appearing as inactive. This can happen when these windows (let's take the friend list as an example) have been activated not by clicking on them, but via a button (e.g. "view friends") or a keyboard shortcut. If another window is activated and then closed (this could be the "add a friend" dialogue), the main window will become active despite standing behind the friend list. Clearly, the friend list should have taken the focus. It wouldn't be so much of a problem is clicking on the friend list didn't activate whatever is in the main window, sending the friend list behind. This is really annoying as it can happen quite often with almost any window (the sever and setting windows, for instance). Tooltips that relate to the main Steam window will also pop-up through the friend list. This must be fixed.
The way to add non-steam games has several problems. The scroll wheel, trackpad doesn't work properly in the file browser. It shouldn't list invisible files but it should list devices (volumes) at the very root, above the startup volume. If possible, implement a standard OS X select/open dialogue or even better, drag and drop from the finder to the game library.
There is almost no keyboard shortcuts. Apple-W is the bare minimum (for closing windows).
Some windows lack a default button (activated when hitting enter) and an "escape" button, although it some cases, the attribution should be obvious (e.g., the sound input window). OTOH, the friend list can be closed by hitting escape, although it doesn't have an "cancel" or "close" button.
(not critical) The "Ok" button should be the rightmost.
Button width should adjust to the names. Too often are button names clipped "...", especially in other languages.
Likewise, the minimal width of a window should adjust to the title (e.g. the server info window). Sometimes, titles overlap with traffic buttons.
The "refreshing list" text in the Servers window overlaps with the button.
Drop down menus and tooltips behave a bit like actual windows. Activating a menu or an info box will alter the drop shadow of the parent window, which is visually annoying. Plus, this cause some weirdness in exposé. Tooltips also don't immediately pop-up at the expected position. For a fraction of a second, they pop-up at the position of the previous one.
GUI responsiveness is generally subpar. I haven't experienced any lag while dragging a window around since OS X 10.1 on my old G4 "sawtooth". Now the Steam main window (especially the game library in detail view) offers me that dreaded vision again. Yikes. This happens on both my Macs (2.66 GHz quad xeon and 2.4GHz Core2Duo). Upon further inspection with Quartz Debug, it appears that Steam behave differently from all other OS X apps I have, and redraws windows are at every position. So Steam can use a fairly high amount of CPU time just redrawing the main window. For other apps, quartz compositor (window server) takes care of the job, not the app itself. I suspect that Steam's drawing model bypasses Quartz Extreme when moving windows (but exposé appears to act normally and smoothly).
Similarly, redrawing isn't parsimonious. The smallest change in a window will involve the redrawing of its whole contents. This the case in my profile: the dimming "currently online" text will cause the whole window to redraw continuously. This alone can use up to 55% of a CPU core which in turns trigger my Macbook's fans. This is terribly wrong. Embedded videos (Flash) are problematic too, probably for the same reason. They can't play smoothly an use 100% of my CPU (e.g. the intro movie of the L4D website). On other browser, they play very well use use less than a quarter of the CPU time.
Scrolling and resizing aren't smooth when compared to web browsers. I recall that Chrome's scrolling was choppy too on the Mac, because they redrew every view twice. They fixed this and it is now smooth. I suspect it's even worse on Steam, because the windows frame, not just the web view, is constantly redrawn when scrolling.
Thanks for having a look into these issues and sorry for my English.

bugs in the non-steam game interface:
when trying to add non-steam games
• the interface shows steam games
http://yfrog.com/4pscreenshot20100513at120j
• the "browse…" interface doesn't show all apps, for example, it doesn't show Diablo II, perhaps because it's no native AMD64 program
• when browsing for apps, the mouse wheel/touchpad cannot be used for scrolling

I disagree with the suggestion that all game data should go to the application support folder.
The app data (cfg files) aren't personal data, so they should go in /Applications, /Library or any shared folder.
Only the user settings (the folder within the 'Steam contents' folder that is named after your account) should go in ~/Library/Application support.
So multiple users could share games on a computer, without using too much disk space.

Bugs
Notification windows and/or tooltips are shown in Expose as separate windows.
No known solution.
Pasting does not work, or appends additional text to the clipboard.
No known solution.
Steam just hangs when starting.
No known solution. You can try trashing ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam, however this problem occurs when Steam's connection to the servers times out, as Steam for Mac appears unable to report an error when it times out, and just hangs.
Steam claims it is not connected to the internet.
Solution: Trash ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam
(~ means your home directory, i.e. /Users/somenoob/ )
Steam Protocol (Steam://) links open in VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, or Crossover Games
Solution: Use RCDefaultApp (http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/) to change the handler, or disable it in the virtualisation/emulation product.
Problems
Steam installs content to a user folder, not a system folder.
Solution: Use symbolic links to relocate ~/Documents/Steam\ Content. See here (http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/ln.1.html) for more information.
"Steam requires that /Applications/Steam.app/Contents/MacOS be created on a case insensitive filesystem, with read-write access"
Solution: Both Steam's location as well as your user's folder must be on a case-insensitive file system.

Great list, here's another for you:
Every Steam window is resizable by the edges of the window. This is wrong, on a Mac, only the resize widget in the bottom-right corner of a window should resize it.

Steam claims it is not connected to the internet.
Solution: Trash ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam

This does not solve the problem for me, so it's a potential solution at best.

It is awesome to not have to fire up the bootcamp anymore!
Suggestion:
It would be great if the major windows were bound to some cmd-number keys. I.e. cmd-1 for Games, cmd-2 for Friends, etc.
Bug?:
Also, in the Add a friend dialog, paste (cmd-v) seems to be disabled. I had to type in a few new friends' ids because I couldn't just paste the text. I hit cmd-v and nothing would happen. I verified in a separate app that I did have the text in the clipboard.

Here are a few that I noticed on my 2010 MacBook Pro:
* If I add Starcraft as a non-Steam game, it doesn't launch. I tried renaming the app and disabling the overlay -- still nothing.
* Scrolling using the trackpad is very inconsistent. On the storefront, it scrolls too many lines at a time. When browsing the filesystem (to add non-Steam games, for instance), scrolling lags by about a second.
* Notifications turn black before disappearing.
* If you mouse over some of the buttons, the window blinks.

Not sure if this is a bug or a preferences issue. I'm on an iMac running 10.6.3, and right now I'm downloading Portal on Steam. idk if this is isolated to when I'm downloading, but aaanyway.
The Steam app image in my dock is constantly bouncing. I'm not receiving tons of invites/messages and whatever in steam, it's just constantly bouncing. And it randomly switches to bouncing out of the dock when it's minimized and just bouncing when I'm looking at the dock.

The text for achievements/friends who own your games when you mouse over them sometimes does not appear. When they do, it makes the drop shadow of the window do a funny dance. You can also mouse over them even when the window isn't active - FuzzyPuffin
Even worse when the popover text is associated with one space, and the main Steam window with a second. Mousing over anything with popover text will jerk you over to another space.
Also, I've got an issue with any of my Steam games launching. They all tell me Steam has to be running. Lastly, Steam will only display on my primary monitor, even when I drag it to the secondary in Spaces view (showing all spaces at once).

My Complaints:
-They should add a toggle to switch between a 12 or 24 hour clock in the overlay. Mine is stuck on 24 hour and it's kinda annoying.
-The scrolling suck but apparently that can fixed by using the Cocoa framework.
-Actually let us close Steam. When I try to close it, it hangs for a bit and then I have to force quit since it's doesn't respond anymore.
-Overlay: Sometimes the mouse cursor doesn't show up.
-Remove the word Steam in the title bar. I think we know what program we are using, amirite?
-Move the window buttons over a bit. It seems odd, having that gap between the red button and the edge of the window.
-The dock icon wasn't that big of a problem until some of you guys brought it up (especially how close it is to the other icons in the dock). All I can say is, change to a black wallpaper :P
-Hopefully Valve doesn't release just one Valve game next week. They shouldn't hold back games if the week's offerings are small. (Nope, you don't get Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2 this week because only 2 indie games came out this week and we needed to meet our quota of 3 indie games per week) - Valve Employee
That is all (for me, anyway)

my problems:
-Movies in the store lag
-copy and paste in chat doesn't work
-when clicking on a link in the chat, the internet page won't open
-scroll speed is too fast and not fluid.
-If I scroll whilst I'm in another space it sends me flying back to the first space.
-Hearts of Iron III claims it can be installed, when I click intstall, I get the normal window for installing, but after that nothing happens. Any other games got this?
I'ts certainly cool to let Steam come to the mac, but unfortunately it still needs some evolution, just like when steam for windows was released.

only 2 cosmetical suggestions:
- the scroll bar on mac os is continuos, but in steam it function like windows, it "jumps" the page content. It is very hard to control it with the trackpad.
- windows like steam update uses tahoma, but Lucida Grande is the standard font used in Mac OS X user interface elements such a menus, dialog boxes and other widgets.
EDIT: when a friend comes online, i can hear the sound but not the notification, because it is under the other windows like firefox or steam store. If I use expose I can see it but that's incorrect as already sad.

Bug:
Steam client crashes when a video completes playing on the storefront. Especially terrible since there is one on the Portal page.
Suggestions:
- Tabbed browsing in the storefront via the client or scrolling persistence on the "featured games" list. If you select a game from page 2-7 then go back, it starts from the top....always.
- Platform filter in the store is a MUST. There's currently no way to see all the Mac games in a list on the storefront.
- Have the storefront detect which platform is used and stop offering a demo that is not available for that platform. (Grey out the button and/or put a platform icon in it)
- Since it looks like a web browser, make it act like a web browser: Command-Left for back, Command-Right for forward.

An appearance suggestion that I don't see in the first post: the Windows buttons are in OS X's "Blue" color scheme even if you're using the "Graphite" color scheme systemwide. (Specifically, they show up as red, yellow & green in Graphite, when they should just be gray.)

Steam broke my backup solution, because it chose to store things that are not documents in my Documents folder, that means my automated cloud-based backup solution is broken, because it tries to upload all the Steam game files.
Game files should be stored in /Library/Steam
User specific game files (such as save-games) should be stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Steam.
I really want to congratulate Steam in becoming a Mac OS X citizen, but I would really love Steam to become a proper Citizen, and not a vandal that litters everywhere.
My gripes so far.
1. Steam slows my system-shutdown time significantly, even after force-quiting Steam, the system stalls in the shut-down process.
2. Steam by default starts up on log-in, this might work on Windows because everybody does it, but on Mac, it is a no go.
3. Steam ignores all established UI/UX guidelines for Mac OS X, including but not limited to: shortkeys, copy-paste, inconsistent window-behaviour, font choice, icon size, window control placement, ok/cancel dialogs (never do an ok/cancel on Mac, use describing words), preferences are not applied immediately, window resizing on all edges, improper use of the maximize button, etc. etc. The Mac Steam development team should read the Mac OS X HIG carefully, it has a solution for all these problems.
4. Steam runs an unnecessary background processes called "ipcserver" that cannot be killed, please dont crawl my system when I shut you down.
It looks like VALVE wanted to keep as much code cross-platform as possible, ignoring the native API's on Mac OS X, this can work, if the user does not notice you did so.
Re-implementing all the code that makes a Mac app behave properly, is a dangerous route to take, as Apple can change de behavior any time, therefor rely on Apple's frameworks to ensure a proper user experience. With VALVE's behavior on the Mac platform, Apple recent decision to take more control of iPhone OS development (Section 3.3.1) is fully justified, because most cooperations will settle for an worse UX for the sake of a more singular code-base.
I am disappointed VALVE, I know this is still a beta, but the whole foundation of your Steam client is flawed, rewrite the client with OS X API's and behave like a real Mac application, or come with a really good reason explaining why you did everything from scratch.

Cannot replace steam icon without it freaking out and overwriting the entire contents of the steam application.
Locking the steam icon causes the steam app to stop overwriting ANY files and just creates a folder called "tmp" to store a duplicate of the steam app in incase the working steam app needs a friend now that the stock icon is gone.
Upon doing the process mentioned in the previous bullet, steam flips the new icon so it is upside-down in the dock.
Forcing to check for updates on startup is a pain in the ♥♥♥, your update system is terrible, use something like Sparkle instead.
Sparkle: http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/
None of the windows have aligned "close-minimize-expand" buttons in relation to ANY other window in OS X.
When the friends list shows groups, it does not show me in a group, but it does count me in the number of online members, so I have a group with "3 online" but only 2 in the list.
Use of alien notification system that is poorly executed.
The use of the incorrect "close-minimize-hide" buttons based on system appearance settings, meaning: If my system is set to use graphite style buttons for "close-minimize-hide", steam still uses the aqua style buttons.
I really want to bring up the last point I made because of the enormity of this issue. Valve, there is something called "Interface Builder" on Mac OS X. Funny thing, it helps you build interfaces. Just my two cents about this, but maybe before you put out another "beta", you might consider looking at this tool as the first of many steps along your way to actually making a Steam client for OS X, instead of a wrapper for a *nix client that happened to be built for OS X. Just a thought, you should take it with a grain of salt.
Possible Webkit/Flash BUG - Reproducing this error everytime.
Go to any game store front page and watch the whole trailer. Normally it shoud then end show next screenshots but instead it hangs steam client forever.
I'm running steam on Mac mini/GeForce 9400M.

I've been experiencing a bug on my Macbook Pro 17" circa 2006.
I've got a dual monitor set up, where my laptop screen is the primary and the external monitor is the secondary. In the display preferences, I've rearranged the secondary display to be higher than the first one.
If I move the steam client to the secondary monitor, I can't place the steam window any higher than the highest point of the primary monitor, which is kind of annoying.

BUG
Problem:
Steam does not handle Spaces properly causing sporadic movements between spaces, and also does not obey focus or window order with hovers.
How to replicate:
1. Open Steam in Large Mode
2. Open any screen in Steam that has a hover such as "Library > Games" on a game which is common between friends
3. Goto Spaces and Expose
4. Move Steam into a different space
5. Return to either the original space or the new space
6. Hover over a friend (or the location where a friend would be if Steam was not moved into a different space)
Expected behaviour:
When in the same space as Steam, the hover should appear appropriately and Spaces should not be triggered. When in a different space than Steam, nothing should occur.
What actually occurs:
When in the same space as Steam, the hover is triggered in the wrong space causing Spaces to switch to the space from which Steam was moved. When in the original space, sometime the hover is triggered even though Steam is no longer in the same space.
Furthermore, if Steam is in the foreground and you use a single click on a background window to switch, hovers will STILL appear even though Steam is not the foreground window.

-Double clicked on the top bar to minimise and it froze.
-Clicking 'preferences', then using the drop down menu to change settings for internet connection and download region. Once an option has been clicked on, the preferences window is deselected, the main Steam window is selected, and clicking anywhere else brings the Steam window to the foreground and moves the preferences window to the background, needing the window to be selected again. Clicking on preferences again refreshes the window, losing any changes made.

bug: Shift+tab to talk while gaming does not work.
suggestion: there may be no need of shift+tab to talk, since its easy to change windows in osx, the function could actually just bring the chat screen to the front.
EDIT: I'm sorry, it seems that it was just a one time weirdness here. shift+tab is working and its actually pretty nice, no need to change anything.

Yes, it doesn't appear or is broken in a lot of games.
You know I am kinda surprised they don't have that Beta badge on Steam. It's a LOT more buggy than day 1 of the Windows UI beta.

-In addition to slow Flash video performance in the Store, Steam hard locks once a video finishes, requiring me to Force Quit.
-Games built for PowerPC simply will not start in Steam. Trying to open one brings up a Problem Report. It's really annoying considering I just bought Gish through the Humble Indie Bundle, and as far as I know there is no Universal/Intel binary.

A couple oversights I noticed:
- Icon is slightly too big and looks out of place on the dock.
- Icon should show information when you hover over it, such as download rate/percentage information.
- I too have CPU usage problems. And I am running a Quad Core Mac Pro w/eVGA's GTX 285 and 8GB of Ram. I have a similar windows rig and the Steam app responds well; here, like others have reported, it feels sluggish.
- There are text/graphic overlap problems with the 3 Mac close/minimize buttons and the text in the title bar.
- In Windows, the "Windows Key" can be a problem and there is often an option to disable. Well, Mac has these sorts of keys, too: Expose and Spaces. There needs to be an override/disable option for these in games menus (such as portal and future titles) or perhaps just Steam client itself.
For example, I have my middle mouse button set to "spaces" - not very good when you want to click the middle mouse button to perform an in-game action. There needs to be an easy toggle switch to disable this. Also, if expose or spaces is set to a keyboard key that needs to be used, such as save/load... there needs to be a way to toggle it so that if you forget and are not in the right window mode, your game doesn't do the equivalent of an ALT-Tab out
Finally, while I do not agree with everything this guy says... he lists a lot of issues that should be addressed:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1262853
Perhaps the key theme to his thread, and I echo it, is this: Steam for Mac should not just be a fully functional "port" of the Windows version. It needs to have an Apple FEEL to it, which means some things should be slightly different. Just like PC gamers *hate* when a game is direct ported from Xbox 360 to PC... each platform has its own 'isms. The Mac client should have a few things tweaked, ie the way dialog boxes, drop downs, buttons, etc. are handled. Some look and feel issues. And things like others have mentioned, ie adding a "add icon to dock" option on install rather than "add icon to desktop" - who the flip adds icons to the desktop in OSX? You add it to the dock. That sort of thing.
Anyway, glad to finally have Steam on Mac!
Lots of bugs and isms left to be worked out, performance being a big one, but hey it's all good. Thanks valve. Now get back to work!! :P

yeah it seems like it happened to everyone. the only way to fix it right now is to open portal in windowed mode. right click portal on steam, go to properties, then set launch options... , in there type -windowed and hit ok. the portals should work fine now, i guess keep it like this until the next update. hope it helps

2. Steam by default starts up on log-in, this might work on Windows because everybody does it, but on Mac, it is a no go.
I agree with that. It's not customary on the Mac to have applications immediately start when you log into the desktop like that. This feature ought to be deactivated by default (but I personally have it turned on by choice).

Ever since the last steam update applied (as of May 14), neither portal or braid will start up.
Portal launches but hangs before loading the main menu, where as braid doesn't even launch at all. :-/

The issue with the Dock icon's size is actually just a rookie icon design mistake. Your first instinct is to take as much advantage as possible of that nice big {128 | 256 | 512}-pixel canvas, which is what Valve did — those rounded squares go right to the very edge of the image. Thing is, many (if not most) application icons in Mac OS X depict physical objects and their shadows, and including those shadows means the objects themselves have to be scaled down a little to fit. As a result, the icons on your Dock — although their image tiles are actually snuggled right up to each other with 0-1px of space in between — look like they have some breathing room.
What all this means is that Valve simply needs to redo the icon at a smaller size and test how it looks sitting in the Dock next to other icons. It needs to be a good neighbour, not just a good icon.
However! This could be much less important if the following is considered:
Should add an (optional) menu bar icon, and have the option to only display in the menu bar, not the dock
+1 to this. To elaborate a bit more, Steam is the sort of application one wants to leave running in the background all the time (at least, once those CPU-munching issues are resolved). General practice for "always-on" apps, usually ones that provide a service, is to let them sit up top as a menu extra rather than taking up valuable Dock space. This actually fits right in with how Steam behaves on Windows: there's an unobtrusive icon in the system tray from which you can access the full application when needed.
Here's a mockup (http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4710/steammenu.jpg) of two possible Steam menu extra icons (just quickly done, or I would've redrawn them to be smoother). Incidentally, you can see that the other menu extras in the shot provide services or system info (Dropbox for cloud-based file syncing, Alfred for quick app launching, Evernote for cloud-synced notes, wi-fi strength, etc.). Some apps let you choose whether to have the icon in the menu, Dock, or both; Bowtie (a skinnable iTunes controller) is one example.

I added some non-steam apps. Namely Douketsu and Quinn. Thing is the icons that are used in steam are right tiny. Its like its pulling the 12 by 12 thumbnail size from the icon file, which is weird because there's a sweet 512 by 512 version right there also.
No problem, I click properties and try changing it...
The steam file browser comes up looking for files of type (*.exe)...
OK, change it to all.
There are no alternate views for searching for images. I get generic jpeg icons, so I have to guess the image by the file name.
I switch to the finder to find the file. OK, its 128.jpg.
Switch back to steam and start typing 128 expecting the browser to go to and highlight the file with the matching name. Nope. Gotta use the jenky scrolling to manually locate the image.
OK, got it, select it and press OK. Now I have no icon.
So basically, I think that the native file browser needs to be implemented and there seem to be some issues with adding and customizing non-steam games. I'm fine with that, just as long as these things are out in the open. I can play games that were previously Windows only on my Mac natively now, so its kind of balanced out.
Here's my question, is Steam ever going to feel like a native Mac application? Trying to put myself in a developer's shoes for a minute, I wonder if it has to feel like a little windows sandbox inside of my computer just to make simultaneous updates and maintenance possible. In which case, I'll deal with all the little quirks happily, because honestly, its way better than my previous solution.

Ability to add CFM-based (Carbon-ppc) apps to the game list.
Use Growl for notifications.
I feel the need to expand on my first post.
The fact that I can't add old games (such as Avernum 1, 2, and 3, RealMyst, Gridz) aren't showing up to add as a game shows a bit of a sloppy design. I can understand a bit about the programming to understand why they might not be showing up. But that doesn't mean that some people aren't playing these old games. In fact, Blizzard uses a CFM app to launch Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne that launches the main Warcraft 3 app and tells it to load the expansion.
As for Growl notifications: Growl is the de-facto way for doing notifications on Mac OS X. It is used by both amateur and professional applications for sending notifications to the user. You don't need to do these notifications if the application is in front. And doing these notifications while there's a full-screen application isn't possible.
Now for more things I have noticed:
The icons for Steam games are bigger than the icons of non-Steam games.
Moving the main window in Spaces doesn't work.

On the voice preferences tab, when setting up push to talk you should indicate that someone has to click then set the key they want to use. I found myself wondering how to set the key because there is no indication as to how the key is set.
EDIT: Also quit spamming the main console log with steam messages. Based on the amount of messages I am seeing in my system log from steam, it needs a separate log file. The amount of verbose logging in this is crazy.
EDIT #2: Pressing "Play" on a game, then if the game needs an update, don't force me to press play again. I pressed play in the first place to play the game, I don't need a secondary prompt for the same action. Either make a separate update button or do updates silently so users don't have to repeat actions what are not decided for them.

Bug:
Double post to say that trying to lock the "packages" folder to prevent steam storing an additional 33.5MB of itself causes it to try to update and fail. This results it in thinking that it is offline.
Fix:
There should not be a need to store a copy of the program in itself. This just increases used space and application launch speed when it tries to figure out of it has a copy of itself. It is a waste of HD space, not much but it increase the overall application size. If a user has a problem with the application, the application is removed and downloaded to be installed again. An application should not try to fix itself if it thinks there is something wrong, the user should take care of it. You cannot program for all eventuality and trying to do so will just case more work in trying to do something that the user can take care of in a very short time by getting a new copy of the program.

What "faults" are you talking about? You're messing around inside an app. That's not very "Mac like" to begin with, and something no typical user would ever do. It won't happen by accident. You break the application on purpose and wonder why it stops working? Because you broke it, that's why.
Steam always requires the application to be up to date for security reasons. If it can't verify the version numbers and the integrity of all components, it will try to fix itself. If it can't fix itself, it will refuse to run. That's not really all that hard to understand, is it? This isn't some little self contained productivity app after all. It handles rights management. It deals with authentication and sensitive data like credit card numbers. It handles cheat prevention. It needs very tight security, and if some weird hacks are necessary to guarantee a pleasant, cheat free game and protect my sensitive data, so be it.

♥♥♥♥ happens. I do a weekly repair of file permissions on my computer and always find stuff that makes me think "how did that happen". Sometimes things don't have to make sense, but the method of handling what it thinks are missing or broken files is a problem if file permissions problems happen to the client.
is it a nitpick? YES. 100% and completely nitpick problem. If it did not treat files as bad if they are different and used codesigning instead to verify the contents of an application have not been tampered with, then this would not be a problem.

Individual bundle files wouldn't make sense. First of all, Source based games share assets. If you install five Source games using bundles, you'd have several GB of assets five times. Not exactly efficient. The applications also depend on Steam. Having individual bundles that stop working if you delete other bundles (Steam itself) doesn't sound like a good idea. But you're right, the games don't belong in the Documents folder, either.

Unique game resources - saved in /Library/Application Support/Steam/username/gamename
Shared game resources - saved in /Library/Application Support/Steam/ - these two correspond to what is currently done in the ~/Documents/Steam Content folder
Individual application bundles for games - created in /Applications/ unless otherwise specified in Preferences (e.g. I keep all my games in /Games/) - contain either the executable for the game engine, or a script or something to launch the game via Steam
I can't imagine that would be such a nightmare to implement, especially compared to some of the other stuff we've been suggesting. :D

Also, in the first moments after switching to large mode (a second or so), if you try to switch back to small it fails.

Change this checkbox around so that it is checked to save user credentials. What you have right now is basically saying "Toggle this box on to turn off a setting" which is a backwards way of looking at it. It should be "This box is toggled on to represent a setting that is on". However, that checkbox should be at the start of the login process as well saying (with box checked) "Save login credentials (not recommneded for use on a public computer)". To reference the user mental model, as it currently is, it is saying "To turn off the light, you have to turn on the darkness".
Bug:
the "Add a game" button NEEDS to be a button. You cannot have it look like a button and behave like a pop-up. Major UI no-no. As a button, it should also have a defined area to click and activate the button. Currently it has no such thing and just looks like a label, save for the ellipsis which incorrectly indicates otherwise.
The drop-down for viewing different sets of games in the library "tab" should also be defined.
The "+" which I still don't understand as a button in the detailed view must go. The placement makes it look relevant to scrollbar, but there is no similarity between the "+" and the scrollbar. It is not defined as a button so it looks like extra text decoration, extremely strange and out of place. And when pressed, the "+" does not represent what the action is. Again, looks like a button, but acts like a pop-up.

I think this is a bug, someone else with two displays will have to confirm this for me. In the steam help menu option "System Information" under displays, my primary display size is listed as "1440x900", and the desktop resolution is listed as "2880x1800". My secondary display is running at "1280x960". I think it is just doubling the size of the primary instead of pulling the resolution of the second display. Alas, I only have one computer with steam so I cannot replicate this on another machine myself. Can someone that has two or more monitors check this out to see if it is a bug or not?
I think this is another bug: Under the server list "friends" tab it is showing servers that people are playing in that are on my "friends" list. I initially thought this would list people from my actual friends list instead of people from groups that I am in. Maybe how that is supposed to work, I don't know.
Another thing about the friends list is that it has does not show me as online in groups, but it counts me in the number of online members. This is a bit of a nitpick, but I figure that if I am online and the group is listed on the friends list, then I am online and part of that group.

Hi Valve,
Thanks for bringing Steam to OSX! I've waited for this a long time and it works great, except for the things mentioned before in this topic.
One thing that annoys me a bit is the shortcut placed in the "home" folder. Seen here (http://cl.ly/0c733784583f33bbcec5).
An option to turn this off or specify a different folder in Steam would be great.

Steam.app apparently has two versions of its icon stored in two separate locations. I found this out when trying to replace the .icns file with another one which is a normal process for changing an application's icon in OS X. I replaced the steam.icns file located in ~/Applications/Steam.app/Content/Resources/steam.icns which took effect only when Steam.app wasn't running. This seemed very strange to me so I looked around the various resources and found that there is a second steam.icns located in ~/Applications/Steam.app/MacOS/steam.icns.
This is a very non-standard location for an application's .icns to be and the application (when present in the OS X Dock) also only uses this .icns file when running, but reverts to the first .icns file mentioned when not running. When I tried to replace this second .icns file, upon restarting Steam.app it reinstalls the default icon over the new one, so there is no possible way to edit any .icns file located in ~/Applications/Steam.app/MacOS.
What's the point of having two .icns files in the first place? Not only does this prevent users from replacing the default icon (which I and others find too large and generally poorly designed), it just makes no sense at all and is completely inconsistent with every other Mac OS X application I've encountered.

I'm very glad that Steam came to the Mac. Since Steam came to the Mac, I didn't know how smooth the game could be. My framerate must be pretty high, much higher than I experienced on the Xbox 360 Orange Box. It's also nice to be able to try the Flash Portal Maps. However, I have reached a spot where I have crashed 3 times in a row at exactly the same spot.
I have uploaded my crash logs to my own hosting, and I am supplying them here, if it can be fixed.

I'm on 10.6.3 on a computer I built. It is a GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with a Intel Quad Core processor, with a NVidea 8800GT 512m graphics card. This crash only happens with this map, and in exactly the same spot in the game (Right after you see the boat and when you fall through the vent, in midair). The game freezes, and eventually closes itself out.

Steam freezes making the user force quit out of the application when viewing other game trailers.
Steps to reproduce.
I'm using 10.5.2 Leopard.
1. Load Steam.
2. Click the Mac tab.
3. View a game (prefereably non Valve).
4. Watch the trailer to the end.
5. Observe the beachball.

A bug that I've encountered that I couldn't find searching the forums:
Often when I'm chatting in the Mac Steam client, my backspace/delete key will cease to function in the program. The key continues to work elsewhere in the system, but Steam needs to be restarted before I can get it working again.
I'm guessing this wouldn't have been an issue if they had just used Cocoa text boxes, but that's a rant for a different thread.

Please Add: Remove any references to a games "minimum" requirement of a PowerPC processor. Kind of pointless for a Content Delivery Service (Steam) that is not available on Macs with PowerPC processors to be offering games that have PPC as a minimum requirement. OR Make some sort of note that Steam is not available for PowerPC Macs.
When I saw the minimum requirements that Civ4 had PPC as a minimum, I figured that Steam would also work on PPC. There is no mention of Intel-only on the SteamPowered main page near the download button

Steam appears to be getting mouse events even though it's not in the front. Take a look at these screen shots:
http://157.157.117.115/steam/Screen%20shot%202010-05-15%20at%2016.03.07.png
http://157.157.117.115/steam/Screen%20shot%202010-05-15%20at%2016.03.23.png
Note that the mouse is above the Finder window at the same place where the steam tooltip appears, the mouse is invisible in the screen shots. Even weirder is that the tooltip appears at the front when there are more applications in front of steam, happens with both terminal and safari, didn't test any other applications.
Another bug is when I type these icelandic characters into the in-game steam chat window, áíóúý (basically all characters with ´ above them), there appears some weird asian characters in front of them... like so:
hv⿂ít⿂á
this does not happen in the chat when not in-game
And also, I can't turn on steam in-game while playing torchlight.

Steam will now drag between spaces and exist on monitor 2. This is good.
I still have a problem with a logical disconnect between Steam and all of my games. Achievements, loadouts, and servers (!) don't work when not connected to steam. And by "servers" I mean "I can't connect to them". :o

Also, I'm running a Macbook (the models BEFORE they became pro, pre-unremovable battery). I use finger gestures a lot to navigate my way around.
First, the scrolling through the content is kind of, wonky. When scrolling down, every third or fourth frame is kicks back up a frame. Similar to a "two steps forward, one step back" situation.
Second, it'd be nice if we could use the three finger swipe left or right to move back or forward in our browser history on the store, similar to how Firefox or iTunes operates.

I (incorrectly it would seem) assumed sir above me was running the most updated version of Leopard, he is not. But I was/am! :) Still, the problem persists.
Also, this is something that I thought was fixed after a few updates (as I've not seen it again, until just now), and I'm not certain of precisely WHAT causes it. But (I think) putting my Macbook to sleep and then opening it up, without quitting Steam, causes the dock icon to turn into this:

jitouch2 has gestures that allow you to move a window without clicking on the title bar and resize without clicking on the triangle at the bottom. However, when I perform the move gesture and move a Steam window, it starts to flash rapidly between the original location and where I'm trying to move it to, and when I stop the move, it returns to its original location. The resize gesture doesn't work at all, with the resize icon disappearing as soon as I perform the gesture to start.
Another annoying side effect of not using native windows I suppose.

A good idea would be to fix VGUI so that it doesn't redraw a whole windows for each tiny change. I don't think it's possible to play game trailers (Flash) in Steam without an I7 CPU with turboboost (and I'm not even sure that it would play properly). Even my Mac Pro will drop frames (one CPU saturated). Safari plays the same videos just fine.
But since they've fixed the Quartz extreme issue, maybe they'll fix this one too. :)

I have an issue with my friends list.
To use the friends feature, I must have downloaded a game. I downloaded Portal as a promotion to the release of Steam to the Mac. But the issue is that even though I have a game in my library, I cannot add any friends into my list. My friend has tried searching for my name in the community section, and no results show up.

There's nothing that Valve can do about this, it's how the game is coded. Almost all Mac games work this way, unfortunately. Valve's games don't, which was a great surprise.
If you want to be able to tab out, run in a window.

I typically four-finger swipe down to exposé, then (because the cursor doesn't properly move while the game is the active window), use two finger swipe to navigate to my mail window. Though I can typically see straight from exposé whether or not the email is worth my attention.
The other way to do it (some would say easier) is to four finger swipe left or right, navigate to mail, hit enter. Though I would bet you aren't running it on a Macbook/Macbook Pro...
Still, the first option is available if you rebind the expose keys to a specific keystroke of your choosing.

A bug I've found is that PowerPC games launched from Steam crash immediately after launch. This might be due to the fact that launching a game from Steam causes Steam to force it to load the overlay library, which isn't a universal binary (it's just i386). Since I use Steam to organize my games, I find this a bit annoying. Please fix :)

I'm new to mac. This is a whole new language so that confused me to no end.
If Steam's running on your Mac and your not having problems, this is pretty irrelevant to you.
If you want to know what's it all about: on a case-sensitive file system "steam", "Steam" and "sTeAm" refer to three different files, while on a case-insensitive file system they refer to one file. As you can image: if you write an application with case-insensitivity in made you might encounter problems in a case-sensitive environment. This is what happened with Steam. To prevent errors, Steam refuses to run if it's launched from within a case-sensitive environment.
To counter this there are several solutions, one which I've described in my post.
Anotherone I found today is described here:

Hover-over highlights (e.g. entries on the friends list) still appear even when Steam is not the application in front. In fact, the highlights occur through application windows that are overlapping Steam's.
Also: Improper permissions are being set on media downloaded through Steam. Media content is being stored inside the Steam.app bundle, probably not a good idea! :P

I've got 3 suggestions to add to the list... (i'd consider the first two features and the third a bug, in this day and age). I originally submitted these to the Steam Support system but was told to submit them here instead.
1. Steam.app package info
The Steam package has very little metadata, e.g. version number in its package info file (i.e. the file "Steam.app/Contents/Info.plist"). The version number at least should be added to this file (a number of 3rd party programs use this info, e.g. AppFresh which lets you know when about new versions of all your applications). Given how easy this is to do (takes about 10 seconds), it should be worth the effort...
2. Automatic (or Preference for) Exclusion of Steam Content (games/etc) from Time Machine backups
I realise people can manually add the folder themselves, but there are OS X API calls that can be made to prevent files/folders from being backed up by Time Machine. This is typically done by "good" applications for cache files and the like.
For the developers, the function is:
bool success = CSBackupSetItemExcluded((CFURLRef)url, true, true) == noErr;
documentation/manual is here:
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/MacOSX/Reference/Backup/Reference/reference.html
3. Support for .pac file Automatic Proxy Configuration
Currently Steam works behind a proxy if you have manually specified it in your Network Settings, but does not work if you have specified a .pac file using the "Automatic Proxy Configuration" setting. It also doesn't work if you've specified both.
The .pac file is basically a script that your company may provide that selects the appropriate proxy for you, based on the URL you're trying to access and other information (like which office/computer lab you're in, for example). It's also an easy way for companies to set up every computer identically (for proxy settings) but still be able to change the server configuration later on...
It seems that Steam is simply calling an API function to get the proxy server setting, as per the older Mac OS X API (pre 10.5). From 10.5.x onwards, you can get the proxy server out of the pac file without having to parse the .pac file yourself. Documentation is here:
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/CoreFoundation/Reference/CFProxySupport/Reference/reference.html

I use Steam for Mac OS X. I saw that Peggle Extreme game was free, and clicked install. Cool...
It ran through the install process, downloaded the game, informed me that it was ready to play.
I clicked play, and I was then informed it was unavailable for my platform. D'oh.
(OK sure I could have noticed the Requirements down the bottom only had a Windows icon, but let's say I'm new to Steam or am new to computers or am not really paying attention...)
I don't know if this same behaviour exists for *paid* games, (and am unwilling to try) but I can imagine one might be a little more upset if it does.
What would be better:
The install button should clearly indicate that it won't run on your current platform (e.g. by turning orange/red); or
Steam.app should inform you (e.g. by pop-up) the game won't run before purchase/download; or
At the very least, it shouldn't download any data, since those files will not run on my platform!

Would you please add something about the default key binds in Source games to the master list? I posted this (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1268051) when Portal came out, but it's long gone from the home page now ;)
Updated with yesterday's releases:
- F8 (HL2 quickload) is owned by default by Spaces or media key play/pause, depending on how the user has the preference for Fn key handling set & whether or not Spaces is enabled. Both settings work in the system-wide capacity while the game is running in the foreground.
- F9 (Portal quickload) is owned by default by Exposé all windows or media key fast-forward, depending on how the user has the preference for Fn key handling set. Both settings work in the system-wide capacity while the game is running in the foreground.
- There is no Pause key (*)
- Binding CMD displays as LWIN
note (*): I suspect that this one is like the cmd key point (just a labeling issue), but it's far less obvious which key on an Apple keyboard returns the code that the games recognize as "Pause."
Thanks.

- EDIT/ADDED: when i move my "space" with command - arrow to the space where steam is, steam gets the active app, even if i have no steam window open. i don't know if this is a spaces bug or should be that way, but it is annoying to me. normally
i expect the finder to be active or the toplevel window.
- mouse over tooltips from achievements in games library sometimes stay floating as separate mini windows until i hover another achievement
- high cpu (2-3% when no window shown - ok, 6 - 20 % when window active - not acceptable) and memory usage (no window - at least 109 mb ... WTF?)
- better expose / spaces / dashboard compatibility
- EDIT/ADDED: in the library - downloads view the numbers of the graph and of the general stats (peak download rate, current download rate, ....) almost never match since i downloaded hl2
suggestions:
- show battery level
- solve documents folder dilema (already announced) - auto timemachine exclusion as mentioned by someone here is also another good idea
- standard clipboard functionality via mac shortcuts - command - X/Z/V/C
- proper proxy support
- since everybody on macosx is running ipfw, provide scripts/commands with rules for open ports in knowledge base
- direct automated report-a-bug functionality
- EDIT/ADDED: when all steam windows are hided and i double click the icon in the dock maybe a window should pop up. easier than via the menu
thanks in advance, keep up the good work!

is anyone else having problems with download? mine keep getting suspended, wondering if it is a common thing or if my ISP is to blame.
I have been having the exact same problem, I will be going to starbucks to try and finish my downloads. My downloads suspend about 30MBs from finishing.

Bug:
download rates are poorly calculated/reported in the Steam client... see the screenshot linked here, while downloading Portal (and nothing else):
http://imgur.com/hof2A.png (http://imgur.com/hof2A.png)
all on the same screen:
from the "total" or current network usage info:
- 814 kB/sec total download rate
- 938 kB/sec peak download rate
from the Portal download:
- 1.3 MB/sec current rate
and if you divide the remaining download amount by the estimated remaining time, you get yet another wildly different value:
- (3875.5 MB total - 1435.2 MB downloaded already) / (21mins 31 seconds) = 1.89 MB/sec
we're not talking a small difference in timing, or an inaccurate estimate for the millisecond i took this screenshot... the numbers were consistently different over several minutes (you can see that the "peak" download value is nowhere near the 1.3 MB/sec "current" value for Portal), and they're each about 50% higher than the last (0.79 MB/sec "total", 1.3 MB/sec "portal", 1.9 MB/sec "estimated rate").
EDIT: oh, forgot to point out the total downloaded amounts are also different:
- 1,133,4 MB in the "totals" section
- 1,435.2 MB in the "Portal" section
and their ratio is quite different to the ratio between download rates as well... weird.

Suggestion: Can there be a sub-menu under the recently played games list in the contextual menu of the Dock icon that lists all of the games currently listed in the Library? Would be a nice shortcut when Steam is in the background.

Steam crashes at random times, and does not close properly after telling it to. You need to force quit it.
Suggestion: Fix it!
The second video on the team fortress section of steam crashes the software.

Yup. I had "No Access" (150) and I was not the owner of the files. What surprises me, is that the GCF file is downloaded into the "Users/blah/documents/steam content" folder, yet the videos are in the app/contents/macos/steamapps/media folder.
This didn't happen with the "Free yourself" video. It occurred with the "TF2, meet the...." videos.

Since the Steam Client update the other day, as soon as I quit a game and Steam attempts to sync to the SteamCloud, it crashes. I don't know what's going on, but based on this
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x00000000004204d0
Crashed Thread: 2
it looks like the recent update of the Steam client broke something. So far my system has logged 5 crashes since the update, all with this exception code (the entire set of reports appear pretty much identical as well).

Implement the Interface and Icon Redesign from the Cocoia Blog (http://blog.cocoia.com/2010/redesigning-steam-for-mac/).
I mean, why not? He did the work for you, and he has done work for many other reputable companies including HP, T-Mobile, Mozilla most recently doubleTwist.
The interface and icon are gorgeous, and fit in to the Mac OSX environment extremely well. The current ported over windows elements are clunky and no offense quite unattractive.
Please take it into consideration.

Noo, it looks to see if the CPU is capable of running 64-bit applications. That has nothing to do with if the kernel is in 64-bit or 32-bit mode.

I am aware that Valve is working on implementing joystick/xbox controls for the mac system.
I would just like to make my official vote for it.
I've loves TF2 since i picked up the orange box for Xbox 360 2 years ago...
Now that i can play on my mac it's Christmas all over again.
But it's hard getting used to keyboard mouse controls.
AND PLEASE don't respond to this post with your opinions on why mouse.keyboard is better...we all play different.
I happen to like and am good at using my xbox controller.
I know steam for windows has the option for joystick controls and I hope they soon come to Mac.
Thank you.

You should try this:
go to news within the steam client
then go to kotaku under channels
open a news page there
click on the homepage button of your steam client
nothing happens
Did nobody notice this before or isn't this or am I the only one who has this problem? The homepage button does work unless you are on an external page.

Nobody has mentioned that steam thinks the 10.6 is running in 64 bit mode when it is actually running in 32bit mode.
It's not reporting the kernel's operating mode, it's reporting the fact that a 64-bit userland is available. Which is a foregone conclusion on OS X 10.5.x or higher, but is gated on Windows depending on whether they installed the "64 bit" edition or not.

Not quite true, the first Intel Macs had Core Duos and thus don't have x86-64. I assume this is detected correctly?

It may or may not be (I don't have that code handy). It doesn't have any bearing on the games since they are 32-bit as is the client. Even if we assume it's wrong it merely skews the survey numbers.
