View Full Version : No sound in Portal for Mac?

Enjoying the new Portal for Mac, but there seems to be no sound. Is there something I'm missing? Everything else seems to work okay, except for a few weird looking fonts here and there which is to be expected from a PC/Mac port. Great job, though!

Do you have the correct sound device selected in your System Preferences?

Same issue here. Looking forward to the resolution.
Portal is a game you *cannot* play without sound… It *makes* the game :)

UPDATE: Restarting the game *completely* fixed it! Working great now! :)

hi i'm new here, i'm also experiencing the same problem. how will i know when the fix is ready?

EDIT: nevermind it works now... i enabled assistive devices in Universal Access (in system preferences), and restarted, and the sound is now working. not sure if it was because of the restart, or if it was because of the enabled assistive devices

I can confirm that restarting my Mac fixed this problem for me. Funny, rebooting is the first thing I would have tried on Windows, but it did not occur to me to do it on the Mac.

Resolved here without a system restart. Glados is yapping at me as I post this:

1) Removed SoundSource from menu (I suspected this might have been the source of the problem)
2) Force quit SystemUIServer in Activity Monitor (to be sure SoundSource is flushed). SystemUIServer will restart itself automatically in a few seconds
3) Relaunch SoundSource (double-click ~/Library/Bundles/SoundSource)
4) Restart Portal

Both Portal and SoundSource are working fine.

So if you have SoundSource, and don't want to reboot (e.g., you're downloading Civ 4 in the background :) maybe this will work from you.

I'd be curious to find out if just steps 2&4 work work for installations without the thing I've mentioned too many times in this post.

Added optional -snd_openal command line parameter to force the engine to use the OpenAL api, can be used if Portal is playing no audio when launched normally

Hi!
My copy of the game was running just fine until I installed the update, and now I can't hear anything! I applied the mod, and I can hear some sound, but it is very garbled :(
What should I do now?

Having a similar issue. Portal ran fine until I installed the update today. Now the sound stutters badly, usually when things start happening on-screen (shooting portals, moving into a new area, etc.) but even when nothing is happening sometimes.
