When im using my USB headphones on my MBP. I lose about 10-15 fps which is a big hit. When I remove my usb head set the fps jumps up and when I put it back in and switches to my headset, the fps drops right back down.

Don't know if this has been stated yet.

USB headphones require plenty of processing power to operate, so if you got weak CPU, framerate will be lower in CPU-intensive games with them enabled. Connect your headphones to dedicated PCI audio card or integrated one to get better perfomance and, possibly, better sound too (with lower delay at least).

I wouldn't like to think the MBP 2.53 C2D/4 gigs of ram is outdated especially for a game such as portal.

It isn't. We're currently getting bad performance due to it being the first day out. It'll get patched up don't worry.

Not only that, but the GFX drivers in OS X are really bad compared to Linux and Win

Just take a look at some benchmark comparisons here between Win 7 Ubuntu and OS X http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_windows_part3&num=1

I saw mention over on the World of Warcraft Mac tech forum of an interaction between certain USB headsets and NV 9400M chipset based systems. I wonder if this is what you are experiencing.
