Hey guys
I installed steam and all went fine and I managed to get a game out of it fine then went back to play later and now im stuck at the loading screen and have to force quit the app as it isn't responding. I have tried deleting the steam folder from library/app support. Weird how it worked earlier but hasn't anymore. I never changed any of the settings
Anyone else getting this with Portal?
I have Mac Pro 2.66 quad with 6GB ram, HD4870 and OS 10.6.3

I've got the same issue.
A stupid question: have you tried to wait a lot? Maybe Steam is doing something and loading become looongg.
Steam for now must be considered a beta i think. An already good beta too but with problems as all young software.

I've let it sit for like 5 minutes and it does not come out of it. Also if you bring up the force quit window, it will tell you "hl2_osx" (lol) is unresponsive."
I almost wish that they would not release any more Source games for a month and instead patch all the bugs. This isn't even open beta quality.

Restart your Mac. I've got the same problem. A restart works for me.

Same thing to me as well...gets to the loading screen and then exits out to the desktop. I removed Portal and am going to try a reinstall and see if that helps

Yeah restarting doesn't work and reinstalling doesn't work either. I've tried both of those things. Still hangs on the loading screen. If I wait long enough it finally loads but there is no text, and I was having the black portal issues. They released a patch today, but, it didn't fix any of this, even after a restart. I didn't wait enough to see if it actually fixed the black portals or not.

Took about 5 mins on my late 2009 17" Macbook Pro. It does stop responding, but it comes back to life if you leave it. Then there's the no menu problem if you have Tahoma already installed...

I've got this problem now as well...
I completed the game last night. Went back in this morning and got a blurry, non-responsive picture of the computer and the "cake" that I saw at the very end of the game. Force-quit after 10 minutes of the spinning beachball, and now I get the original blurry loading screen, for ever.
Tried restarting.... no go.
edit: interestingly, if I forcequit steam itself, and restart it, I can recreate the blurry computer/cake loading screen (computer on left, cake on right)... still unresponsive though.
I get about 45 seconds of spinning beachball with the Valve logos, finally jumps to Portal logo screen seems to load properly for about 10-15 seconds, and then switches from cursor to spinning beachball... then it's unresponsive.
Checked and Tahoma font is not disabled.
of other note.... Neither Steam nor Portal updated between being able to play, and not play.
Sequence: Steam updated, portal updated, which fixed black portal issue, I completed the game. Next day, no steam update, no portal update, cannot load portal.

That's a bit harsh of a statement. There's never any release of a game without problems. Also, some updates are engine updates, so other Source games released for MAC in the future like TF2 will already have them.
Name one game that got released without any error, bug, glitch or incompatibility.

FWIW, there was a Steam client update today for me, no portal update, and Portal still hangs at the loading screen. Only option is to force-quit... I can't even command-tab back to the desktop.

bump... anyone have any ideas on how to get past this?
I've validated the game cache integrity... it's OK
It's not the Tahoma font thing, all versions of this font are useable, validated, and "checked"
As every new day comes up, I retry... each day I get a brand new Steam client update that is EXACTLY the same size (21722KB), but Portal itself is never updated.
Steam client itself seems to work fine, even quits gracefully for me.
Portal itself hangs at blurry loading screen... I've left it for up to 45 minutes. Spinning beachball, and shows as unresponsive in force quit.

I had the same problem when I first tried running Portal. What seemed to fix it was quitting Portal (force-quit if necessary... the hl2_osx anyway), quitting steam, then trying again.
It still took a while to... load I guess, but only the very first time.
After that, it still takes a minute or two, but no biggie.
Probably not that helpful. =/
