View Full Version : "Validating Steam Files 100%" but Portal does not load

I'm having an issue with Portal loading up -
The game is 100% downloaded, but whenever I try to start it up I get a window that says "Validating Steam files." It gets to 100% and then it hangs indefinitely - the game never starts up. If I click "close," it just starts the process over, and the game will not load.
What's wrong here? How can I fix this?
Thanks!

If you have a firewall activated, try turning it off for a second and then try to validate de files again.

Same problem here. Turned of Firewall as well, didn't make a difference.

Last night, I finished installing Portal
When I would attempt to run, I had the validation problem, followed by an error message stating that the servers were to busy.
This morning, that problem seems to have been alleviated:D,however, the program gets stuck on the "fuzzed-out" loading screen; it just sits there and spins. The program doesn't crash, because I am able to use 'command-alt' to switch programs.

Same problem here - well, apart from spacecarrots last post.
Validating files to 100% and then nothing. It just sits there and mocks me with the message "All files successfully validated."

I have an exact same problem, using snow leopard... Could it be that my connection is slow? i tried running it offline, but no difference.

same problem. does nothing after validating files. i can get it to work if i delete local content and re-download portal, but the game invariably freezes on the first play. then after rebooting, the same problem occurs.

my problem is that Portal worked OK until I completed the game, and now it just freezes at the blurry loading screen. Requires forcequit.

Count me in with the same problem.
Portal simply doesn't end the "loading" phase.

Add me to the list - "All files successfully validated." [Close]
Um, thanks. Glad it's validated. Can you please launch the game now?

I'm not sure what "bump" means, but I suspect I'm doing it too - I've got the same issue. I was downloading, at 95%, computer had to go off for a sec, turned it back on to resume downloading, and from then on it started this "Validating - 100%! Sorry, servers too full" business. I suspect my problem might just be because my speeds have been capped after using all my bandwidth, but there is little information I can find supporting that :(

Just FYI, "bump" is simply a post that brings the thread back to the top of the thread list so that people see it and it gets responded to.

Add me to the list of people who've had this same problem...
It worked for awhile, but then after the newest update Portal just decided to hang at start-up, then when I tried to fire it up again it just tells me how very validated it is. Apparently stunningly so. No real help on the forums.
I've heard of people solving this problem by quitting Steam, going into their Steam Contents folder (which should be in Documents) deleting the GCF files for the game in question and then getting Steam to redownload them correctly. From what I've seen it's a decently common problem, and not just with Portal, so you'd think Valve would have posted a fix or...or something. I'm trying it now and am in the midst of downloading, I'll let you folks know if it works.
EDIT: Okay, I did that and it was basically a no-go, so I went into Steam, right-clicked Portal and went into Properties, and from there Local Files. I clicked "Verify Integrity of Game Files" and it attempted to validate for real, after which it told me which files were causing the problem and downloaded them again. Fixed it right up for me. Hope that helps.

I went into my Finder, searched for .gcf and deleted all of the files that came up. Half Life 2 is now finally installing so hopefully this solves the issues which others are having =)

You could just click on the game with right button and then choose "Delete local game content".

try removing the ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/*SteamName* folder and trying to launch the game again.

Try deleting a file called Registry.vdf, then restart.
That solves the Steam servers are too busy problem. It occasionally alleviates the validation hangtime as well. Hope this helps.

Maybe perform a steam backup and then go into your library and uninstall portal or tf2 etc... then restart your pc and load the backup into steam. (Not sure if Mac's do this as Im on pc but im sure it would)It's fixed some problems like this I have had only on a PC.
This would be more for ppl who don't have the b/w to be redownloading all that data again.
