can't buy gmod !

heey i have a problem , i just download portal and wanted to buy garry's mod but it says that i dont own a game for playing gary's mod so it wont let me buy it , is this a problem or what because portal is on the list of games that have the source engine

Launch Portal once, then try to buy Gmod again.
If that doesn't work, then we need to figure out something else.

I try as you said but it keeps saying the same thing

It used to work with just Portal. It's probably because its free at the moment, I know HL2 Dm, Lost Coast and Portal First Slice don't work with it, because you can get them for free. It probably detects that Portal (at the moment) isn't a paid-for app and so doesn't allow it. My advice is to get the TF2 and Garry's Mod bundle (TF2, IMO, is one of the best multiplayer games OF ALL TIME :P) or just wait for Portal to go back to paid. Bear in mind that whatever you do, you only get the models and maps for games you've got in your Steam library: you can't use maps from HL2 or its episodes, CSS or DoD if you haven't bought them.

i just been notify that i should actually buy a source game , even if i wait till portal it a paid game it will still flagged as free on my account , so i was thinking , getting Half life 2 Deatmatch ($5) would let me buy garry's mod right?

You should just buy the CSS and GMOD deal because both games are lots of funs and there are tons of mods that require CSS to work in GMOD. CSS with GMOD gives you a lot of stuff. There are a lot of maps that are in CSS that you can put into GMOD. Its a great deal.

Yeah, but without CSS, 90% of all custom models and maps won't work. You will end up with mountain loads of missing textures and models on most servers as well. In fact, your game might just crash all the time.

I think CSS contains all of the models used in HL2. If you install CS:S alone, something called HL2 preload appears in your Steam library, and that thing is massive.

Well, my brother has the retail version of Portal (CD Version), and I gifted him Garry's Mod, and it still says he can't play it. Which is odd, because I also have the retail version and it allowed me to buy and play Garry's Mod.

I sent a ticket to support and haven't heard anything back. If they say Portal isn't a source game, or that it doesn't support Garry's Mod, I will be asking for a refund or some kind of compensation. False adverstising ain't cool.

The Free download does not come with source SDK If you bought Portal it would come with it

Contact steam support for information. Maybe it's an unintended effect of you getting it for free. You should find out for sure first before you go and buy something you might not even play just because you thought you needed to.
