Just downloaded Steam for Mac and the *FREE* version of portal that was available, and as excited as I was, I was disspointed that Steam (or the game itself) did not have built in HID Controller support.
I have various other games/emulators/applications which recognize my controller with no need for third party utilities, so I don't see why this can't be built right into Steam. (Pleading ignorance here, this might have to happen on an individual game level instead of the top level, but I still see no reason why a game like Portal couldn't do it very easily.)
I could use a third party utility, but why would I want to? I don't want to have to set up the key forwarding for each game.
Just adding this to the wishlist.
Forum searching only produced a handful of posts with links to 3rd party utilities, so I apologize if this has been mentioned elsewhere.
