Hi, i have installed Portal on my MacBook Pro and it launches to the lab screen but i can't interact with it. I move my mouse and nothing happens. I press keys on my keyboard and try the trackpad and nothing happens. I'm just stuck with the screen panning from side to side by itself. I can't get any menus or anything to come up apart from the Steam overlay.

Has anyone else got this bug? Any fixes available?

I have this bug, and so far none of their patches have fixed it. If you hit the arrow keys down and hit enter you can get it to start the game, but again no text anywhere and I was having the transparency issues with the portals. Not to mention it takes a good five minutes before the loading screen fades away.

I mean, it's a free game so no loss here. They have been good about getting Civilization IV working, which was a game I had paid for and wasn't working initially.

No fixes that I've been able to find.

Thanks jaasum and heatwave21. I can confirm that the actual problem is that there is no menu when the game loads up, which makes it difficult to start.
But jaasum's hint did work for me. After hitting the up and down keys a few times and then the return key a menu came up where i could select a level and start the game.
However there was no text on the menus, which makes it a bit hard to tell what is going on, but the game is playable!!
Now i just need to work out what all the gaming keys are.
I was thinking that maybe some of the shared game files might be messed up after the initial install. So i might completely uninstall Steam and try again from scratch. A friend has an exact same computer to mine and his works fine, so something must be missing that is supposed to draw the menus onto the screen.

Hey, I fixed it! It's a font bug. Find an application called font book on your Mac. open it, and search for a font called Tahoma. When I searched for it, some of the different styles of the font were turned off. Select the fonts that are disabled, then click the empty checkmark box at the very bottom of your window. Portal menus should work just fine now!

Let me know if I need to be more specific.

I was thinking the same thing last night heatwave21. I have tried turning on the Tahoma font but still don't have any text in my menus. I run a font program called LinoType Font Explorer X to manage my fonts, so i am thinking that there might be some conflict between it and Steam / Portal that isn't rendering the font to screen. What styles of Tahoma do you have? I only have "Normal" and "Negreta".
