When I try to desktop shortcuts for games like Machinarum or World of Goo, they show up, but they show up with a generic Steam icon.

Is there a way to get them to show up with their own icon?

I noticed that games like Braid and Portal have their own unique icons, so I thought it would be possible somehow. I just wasn't sure how to go about it. I was wondering about this too and after some tinkering, I managed to get this to work! What you need to do is replace the shortcut icon on the desktop with the shortcut file in the game itself.

Go to the Steam Content directory in your hard drive, then go to common, then the game you want to change icons. There should be a folder with the game's name and one item in it. Right click the item and choose "Show Package Contents". That'll open up a new finder section. Go to Contents, then Resources, and find the .icns file. Copy that. It's the file that has the icons for the game. Then go back to your desktop shortcut (The default steam one for your game) and right click it. Choose "Show Package Contents". Once again, go Contents, then Resources, and you'll see a file called shortcut.icns. Post in the .icns file you found that goes with the game and rename it shortcut.icns. It should replace the Steam icon for that game on the desktop, and you'll be done!

Hope this helps!

easier:

1.) mark the desktop shortcut and press alt+i
2.) goto the steam Content Folder and into the specific game folder
3.) mark the game icon and press alt+i
4.) mark the icon in the top left corner, alt+c, then mark the icon in the top left corner of the shortcut, alt+v
5.) done!

Just for clarity, on mac os the copy and post functions are command, not option/alt.

yeah copying and pasting the little icon on the Get Info windows is the easiest way to change them.... remember these are all just launchers, not the actual game .apps.... so you change it the same way you change icons for anything else.
