I currently have the steam version of Medieval, and really want to buy kingdoms, but steam is charging $15 for it, whereas I can pick up a copy of the retail version on a disc from ebay brand new, never opened, for $6 or $7. Can I install kingdoms and have it added to steam and recognized and run it okay even though its not a steam version? Thanks.

Check here (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601) to see a list of retail games that can be used with Steam.

If it's not on there, chances are you'll have to purchase it on Steam, sadly.

It is 4.99 on the UK store, so not very expensive.

you can install Kingdoms, and see if it works, if not, you can uninstall Kingdoms, and live or buy steam's version of Kingdoms

It usually doesn't work. Store page for Kingdoms says you need the steam based version of Medieval II. It's safe to assume it goes the other way round too, retail needs retail version.
