Hi all. I can play through hl2 fine, even with all the graphics settings turned up, but I can't even get past the opening scene of episode 1 (or 2) even with all the settings lowered to the minimum. very choppy video and sound, it is uplayable... I have a gateway with windows xp media center edition, athlon 64 X2 2.21 ghz, 2 gb of ram, nvidia geforce 6100.

Have you tried verifying your game files? Restarting steam, and your computer?
How much hard drive space do you have? And, have you done any searches in the support area for this issue?

Here are some video settings (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1040-JWMT-2947) you can play with for different launch options. I'd try lowering the DX level. Also, make sure your graphics drivers and DirectX drivers are up to date.
Here's another article (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1216-JMTZ-0860) you can look at if you didn't find it.

Your graphics card seems to be low end. I'd turn down some options with the new updates. Start at minimum and watch for smoothness. If it's still smooth, try increasing a couple things. Just one at a time
