Making a mod Steam Friendlier?

I'm trying to play a very old Half-Life mod on Steam, but the mod sometimes crashes Half-Life. I suspect it has to do either with the fact that I play on a 64 bit duo core machine, or the more plausible sounding fact that the mod seems was created well before Steam was released and there might be some .dll files stuff going wrong or something like that.

So, is there a way to make old Half-Life mods Steam friendly like what was done to this mod (http://www.moddb.com/mods/buzzybots/downloads/buzzybots-23d-steam-friendlier)?

Depends on how old. Was it made before Half-Life 1.1 (released in 2000), if not then the dlls should work.

I realized my problem and it has nothing to do with Steam (in)compatibility.

One of the mod's gamemode spawns Half-Life monsters into multiplayer games, but that crashes Half-Life. This happened even in the WON version.
