View Full Version : Wheel Support?

Anybody know if this game will support Steering Wheel controls?
Yeah, I read about it being more arcade-like than sim, but I just can not get used to a driving/racing game with a gamepad.
Heck, I even use my Logitech MOMO in the driving parts of GTA IV, then switch to the Dual Action pad for the "on foot" parts :)
Hoping it works with my wheel, even if there is no force feedback.
Anybody got any idea?
Thanks...

if it supports a xbox-controller it will support a wheel.

with all the great PC racers/split screen racers recently, I may invest on a Official Xbox Wireless Steering Wheel as most games have native support for it and I already have the wireless adaptor.

Yeah, I took the plunge several years ago and bought my Logitech MOMO with pedals just for NFS Most Wanted.
It was a HUGE learning curve going from my trusty old Microsoft Sidewinder Pro Stick to an actual steering wheel with pedals!
Once you have experienced (and are comfortable with) a good force feedback wheel with pedals, there is really nothing better for any driving/racing game.
Fuel does work with my wheel, but there is a HUGE dead zone and it has NO force feedback whatsoever!
That is my real concern with Blur, it may "work", but without the force feedback it is really only half the fun.
Imagine trying to drive a real car without ANY tactile feedback. No pressure on the steering wheel in turns, no "bumps" from road surface. It would be pretty hard in my opinion.
Same thing when you get used to a racing game with feedback and then try driving without it.

If you have a wheel you should stop playing games like NFS and play games like rFactor or LFS to really use it like it's supposed to be used. =P
Unless you already play them.

Spot on.

See, here's the thing. I don't like being told what I should "go play". I really liked NFS Most Wanted, I do NOT like realistic SIM racing. It's just too dam hard.
When I'm gaming, I game to have FUN and relax.
Sorry, but I use my wheel in all the racing/driving games I enjoy, not using it for what someone else thinks it should be used for. I appreciate the suggestions for games to try, just the delivery could have been a little less harsh.
Don't mean to sound so defensive, but my real point here was that I want to know does this game really take full advantage of a wheel? Just because it supports the 360 does not mean it will really work properly with my wheel. As I said above, Fuel "Fully Supports the Xbox 360 Controller" but it most definitely does NOT work properly with wheels.
And it's not just the Logitech MOMO, the G25 and G27 don't work right either. The official Fuel Forum is full of complaints about it.
No force feedback, a HUGE dead zone right in the middle of the steering wheel's axis.
So, is there anyone who has a wheel controller that can confirm whether or not Blur fully supports all it's function? Does the steering work properly, does the force feedback work properly?
If this game doesn't work right with my wheel, I think I'm gonna pass on it. I was really looking forward to it too.

Tried my first race with my Xbox wireless racing wheel and decided I'd never use it again. The game is not meant to be played with a wheel sadly. Sure it "supported" the wheel in that all the functions worked and the buttons were mapped appropriately, but the game was designed for console play with a controller. Steering feels like it's mapped to button presses rather than analog input so you get the huge dead zone. Also. no force feedback, at least with the xbox wheel.

Thanks for that bobafett12, what a major bummer:(
Well, I hope this is not the new trend, racing games with no real support for wheels.

That sounds exactly like split second. To make that game work better with my MOMO wheel I used the software that came with it to make a profile for that game. I increased sensitivity to try and eliminate that deadzone and enabled auto-centering force feedback. I also went into the game's settings and enabled gamepad vibration. That gives some force feedback on the wheel whenever you hit something. After those changes the game is pretty enjoyable with a wheel, but still nowhere near as good as a game that has full native support for wheels.

Or with a keyboard.
That is, in fact, one major difference with Blur (and Split/Second, surprisingly, despite some posters bragging on it for the wheel support); the keyboard support is not tossed in haphazard, and the default key assignments can be changed (if need be).
Data point: I have the Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 6000 V.3 - while it's one of the better general-purpose wireless keyboards, a gaming keyboard it is not. Also, let's be honest here; most games (and racing games in particular, especially on the PC) tend to go out of their way to pry the gamer's hands from the keyboard.
However, I have absolutely *no* problems with vehicle handling (even with the keyboard) in Blur. *None*. (With NFS Shift, or GRiD, by comparison, the handling with a keyboard is absolutely *awful*.) I did nothing fancy; I'm even still using the default keys (though all that is change-able in the Options menu).
Setup is as follows:
ASUS P5N-EM HDMI
Celeron DC E1200 (bone-stock clocking and HSF)
3 GB single-channel DDR2-800
Visiontek HD5450 (512 MB GDDR3)
200 GB Maxtor DiamondMax 8 SATA HDD (will replace with WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA HDD this weekend)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 6000 V.3
Logitech V220 Cordless Mouse
I do not have either IntelliType Pro (keyboard) or SetPoint (mouse) loaded (though both have x64 versions available).
Further note that all the hardware is either low-end or older hardware (the motherboard is mATX/HTPC, but mounted in an older ATX midtower case, for example). In short, the only envelope this PC is pushing is the limits on what can be done with budget hardware.
I play at 720p (in Blur) and with LOD set at the midway point (mainly because of the low-end GPU and low-I/O HDD). (That's 1280x720 for the PC purists, and the thrash happens at the beginning load, but not during single-player itself.)

I was able to get my old Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel (that I purchased along with the original xbox) to function in the game by using the x360ce software. The buttons all functioned properly. I even got the force feedback to work but there is a HUGE deadzone that I can't fix ( no Vista version of the Sidewinder Game Controller Software with which to decrease the deadzone ) so it's basically useless for this game as it stands.
Since I have a PS3 I was thinking about getting a Logitech Driving Force GT since it works on PC as well and giving that solution a try. Or, I'll try the Sidewinder on my old XP rig which does have the Sidewinder software available (but isn't near as powerful as my Vista rig) and giving that a try. Haven't decided yet :)
