Because unless they patch some decent gamepad support into this game, it's unplayable to me.

No, there are none. I'd be down for one myself :\

What do you mean? What controller are you using?

The only thing I can recommend is using this: http://redcl0ud.1.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=2155

It emulates the Xbox 360 controller, so essentially what you do is map your controller buttons to that driver software and you should be good to go. I caved and bought a 360 controller myself, but I do believe the difference is due to the fact that previous generation controllers have been analog and the newer ones are digital.

I would never buy an Xbox 360 controller, I think it's horrible. I have pretty small hands and it really isn't confortable at all. I've always been a fan of Playstation-like gamepads. I'll check that emu, maybe I can get something working. I'd really like to be able to play this game.

I tried it, it doesn't seem to want to work much..

You can refund if it's a pre-purchased game and the game hasn't been released yet. Otherwise, Steam usually will not let you refund.

In rare circumstances, if the game has such significant technical problems that the game is unplayable, Steam may authorize a refund. I believe this happened with Grand Theft Auto IV.

GTA4 is just extremely demanding, it isn't broken in any way no matter what anyone says, and I have never heard of Steam handing out refunds for it for that reason.

The Steam standard is one refund per customer for customer service reasons, but after that never again, for any reason, other than preorders. I used my one refund on Risen, as it had much more DRM than the retail version and I wanted to switch.

On topic: the Xbox pad is the defacto PC standard pad now, for better or worse. Personally I like the pad, and like having a standard PC pad so we have in-game UI markers and such, but I know some people cling to other pads.

Ah, I did have a refund on a preorder, so I sure hope that doesn't count as my one refund :P

I think some of my weird USB drivers for my PSP are somehow messing this up for me. I've tried two Xbox Gamepad emulators and both choke pretty hard.
I'm at a loss, I really wanna get this game working... And no, I'm not buying a gamepad I can't use.

Well, This game uses DirectInput, apparently, so all those xbox emulators can't help, they're for games that use a different input library. If this game really uses direct input, then it outright refuses to support every other pad. And that's very lazy of them. Anyway, I'm at a loss, I've tried everything, now all I can do is wait for a patch, or ask for my money back.

Guys, just try Pinnacle Gamer Profile.

http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/

It's an amazing utitliy. My friends use it to get PS3 controller/joystick support in games. Also, if it is a popular game (hopefully it turns out to be because I just bought it) they most likely have a prebuilt keybinding scheme for it.

They have a trial.

Ahh, I almost thought that would be nice, but this lets you bind keyboard/mouse to your gamepad. This is virtually the same as playing with the keyboard and robs you of any analog controls. There's no point in this. joy2key does the same, but I'm not playing the game with digital hard-on controls that defeats the purpose of wanting to play with a gamepad.

Glad you finally got one of the 360 pad emulators to work out for you. I took the lazy route and bought the 360 controller like I mentioned before. It's been getting its fair share of use and I think it's a solid controller (sans the crap d-pad).

For those who are using Logitech gamepads, just use the mapping program from the Logitech website to map the keys to your gamepad keys.

That's what I did and it's working better than a charm.

Thats digital steer and gas/brake (which is the major advantage of the x360 pad - the analog triggers). What you really want is an analog stick like on ps2 or logitech rumblepad - or x360c.
Mapping keyboard keys to those doesn't give you analogue keyboard hits either :)
