View Full Version : Half-Life 2 Downloading (Not sure if it will run yet)

[EDIT]Now that it is officially released, you can update the games you pre-downloaded. Any new downloads should be Mac compatible.

Click here (steam://install/220), and it will start downloading (not a version that works though)

IT DOESN'T WORK
BUT, you can do this, and then when the servers get hammered (when it is officially released), you don't have to download much. :D (at least if it's anything like when Portal for Mac was released)

Shouldn't be too long of a wait now (hopefully).

It probably won't run until Valve flips the switch.

That's why I'm doubtful, but it's worth a try.

That may not download the right files, considering Valve hasnt officially released it yet.

It won't - it's downloading Windows version of the game - I've tried this before. But having game files on HDD can make the download of Mac version quicker.

k, cool. I figured it either wouldn't run, or it would be the windows version.

It'll download all the content and the Windows binarys. Then once the Mac Version gets put live, all it will DL is the Mac Binaries, along with possibly some updated content.

Might as well start downloading it now before the servers get hammered. :)

I already knew it won't redownload all the content, just binaries and updates, since people were copying their stuff over for portal when it was first released on Mac to speed up the download. Thanks for reminding me though. Atleast my download won't take long now :D

Seemed to good to be true from the start, but whatever. You are right though, it won't be much longer. Can't wait! :D

I've just been playing L4D2 in Windows to distract myself in the mean time. This is a bit unrelated, but while I was playing, I got a call for a job interview. I just stuck the application in this morning too. I got laid off two months ago, so blehh. So I have a lot of reasons to be stoked today ^^

I'm just going to go ahead and download it AFTER it's released. I don't feel like switching to OS X yet.

Just curious, what hardware are you using? iMac? Macbook?

Is this phrased to the general public or OP?

Also, nice! That application went though fast.

It was for the OP, but really, anybody. I guess it's more for it's own thread though, haha.

@blendermf: Ahh. Nice. I'm running an 08' iMac. Radeon HD graphics card. I can't wait to see how HL2 performs on OS X. And thanks, by the way :)

I have Half Life 2 on my Mac but I can't download anything more. It still says that it's not available for my platform. Guess I'll just have to wait till they flip the switch.

Sorry I got rid of the original instructions, I updated it in a limited form now. You can get steam to download it using this link (steam://install/220). (as stated it won't run though, but will speed up the download of the official release.)

That would save a lot of time, maybe i'll try it anyway just to save time.

If it's anything like Portal, it will save time.

@Nathanial I can't wait to see how it runs either. Probably not as good as through bootcamp. I'm hoping it speeds up though as they optimize and update the opengl version of Source.

Wow, I love Steam's download speeds. Done in ten minutes.

Works with TF2, Episode 1 and 2. Will try it with L4D2 now...

EDIT: L4D2 is installing. TF2 just comes up with the 'Servers are too busy message.'

I'm pretty sure it'll work with ANY steam game, but not all of them will have ports, of course :P

It will probably work with most of the games, you just won't be able to run them until they are officially released. I'm gonna probably do this as soon as any (already released on Windows) source game is announced as being released on the Mac.

Nathanial beat me to it.

Can you post a link for TF2 and L4D1 and L4D2? I am downloading HL2 right now thanks to your link. It will be very nice having a quick play time once the "switch is flipped" as they say on here.

I repeat: TF2 does not work. Sorry.

They have TF2 just completely blocked from OS X users right now. That'd be why. It doesn't even show in your games list, even if you own it.

I think it's only Source games because they all run on the base source engine files that are already downloaded.

While you are at it, why not pre-download Episode One (steam://install/380/) and Two (steam://install/420/) as well?

You can download pretty much any game you have through the steam install, even if there isnt a windows version, since it seems there isnt any checking on that part.

Downloading Half-life 2 now. Episode One is also available but I don't see Episode Two on my list!

Also, it looks like if you have Portal already installed on your Mac, it will be a shorter download for Half-life 2. They both seem to be on the same engine now.

Looking in my games list, there is an Install button for Episode 2. It's preparing to install Episode 1 right now, so I haven't tested it yet, but if the button's there, it's probably a good bet.

Also, I was downloading the Windows HL2 (at a blistering 3-6 KB/s), and it'd reached around 6 MB, then the next time I checked, it was back to zero bytes and it and the others were "officially" available. Perhaps it pre-empted the Windows download with the Mac one?
