At $20 is this a worthwhile RTS? I've never played it before.

Personally I loved it. I'm a star wars fan but not a geek, but the game was fun IMO, though I preffered the space battles to the ground battles.
I'm not sure how it handles on multiplayer though, and have no idea if people are still playing it.

It's very good if you need your Star Wars fix. Except for the problem I posted that's steam-related at the moment it's worth buying for SP.

There is a demo if you want to try before you buy.

I already have a retail box. I really wish I could activate it for Steam to consolidate it into my library. :/

Yeah I bought the retail like 2 years ago too so i'll probably wait for a sale before trying to get it on Steam for convenience. Anyway I would say as a Multiplayer RTS its not that good. There are better games for your time.
The reason to buy this is if your a Star Wars fan an want to take over the galaxy RTS style. It can be fun building up fleets of Star Destroyers an crushing the Rebellion. Maybe blowing up a Planet or two with the Death Star :P
There are also some decent mods out there that add lots more ships an units to the game though I wonder if they work with the Steam version yet. Since the post below says the version number is different.

Same here. It'd be nice if I could register my retail CD keys...
I'll wait for a red-hot sale price instead! I assume this works with 64bit Win7 now?
EDIT: According to this post (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1283666), Win7 64bit works fine :)

I bought the GOLD edition (non steam) when it was released and have only ever played the Skirmish Space mode. Its great fun.
Always plan on playing the other two modes but when I load the game I just inevitably end up playing the space skirmish scenarios.
Clicking a button and watching Star Destroyers warp into a battle at your command is really satisfying. When I lose one, I deeply regret its loss (you tend to lose several at higher levels of gameplay).
I only ever play as Empire. The couple of times I tried to play the Rebel Alliance, I found the Mon Cal cruisers dont have the same effect on me as Star Destroyers do. I know its only possibly psychological but still. :)
Plus, having Vader and Fetts piloting skills on your side beats Luke and Han Solo hands down for me personally.

I used to play this game quite a bit. If you have not played this I recommend that you buy it and have as much fun as I did. I might buy this just to have on my steam available for a couple of sessions in the future as I don't have my discs anymore.

I would highly recommend it, it is a multi group RTS meaning that instead of controlling individual units you usually control groups of units it has massive replayabillity as well as just plain skirmish matches witch can be endlessly fun, as well as the hard setting unlike other RTS's provides an actual challenge.

Same here. I bought retail not so long ago, and I can't add it to Steam... even though it's a similar retail release, EaW+FoC pack.
Whoever manages games available on Steam has a nasty habit of adding game to the shop AFTER I buy retail release, without an option to activate it on Steam.

I think it's the only game where you have Death Star as combat unit.
Need I say more? :)

Good - the land battles are boring nonsense, but you can normally avoid those (especially as the Empire, where your goal is usually to build the Death Star). This is the game where you can command a squadron of Star Destroyers - need I say more?
