My gaming rig has been offline for so many months now. I just got my own internet connection yesterday and I've been updating stuff like crazy.

That includes Steam and The Orange Box of course. I was hoping that the latest patches for HL2, HL2Ep1, and HL2Ep2 would fix them bugs. Alas, I am wrong.

What has been happening all these months? This thread just gets longer and longer.


Bugs to Report:
1. Nothing new because I stop playing the moment I see City17's broadcast screens being too gamma-bright. That includes the screens at the train station in HL2 and the one in the title screen of HL2Ep1 where "Mr. Bald Scientist with a face hugger for a pet" informs people of the situation. That is the most visible bug in my opinion. Those screens are just too damn bright you can barely make up Breen's face or anything that is playing on those screens.

Ep2, Some lightbulbs in the mine are too bright.
2. Was Playing Ep2 this morning after it updated. Played all the way from the start to the part where the vortigaunt and you are going to get the extract. Seems to be bugless, except for some light-bulbs in the mine being too gamma-bright you can barely make up the light-bulb where the light is coming from.

Last attempt at a solution:
I will download the latest driver for the nVIDIA GTX 295, which is my vcard. Hopefully, with this latest driver installed, HL2, HL2Ep1, and HL2Ep2 will work without them bugs.


Should my "Last Attempt" fail, should I restore from backup the un-updated version of HL2, HL2Ep1, and HL2Ep2 and set their "auto-updates" off?

Or maybe I should just play through HL2, HL2Ep1, and HL2Ep2 and just try to ignore those screens?

Your input will be most appreciated.

...can't wait to get DeadSpace, Bioshock, and Bioshock 2.


UPDATE:
Updating nVIDIA GTX295 driver does not seem to fix City 17's mass broadcast screens'(breencasts) gamma-brightness. Though it seems that any other screen within the game seems to be ok.

I guess I will be playing HL2, HL2Ep1 and Ep2 through, even with this most annoying visual bug.

I've been seeing this on my system ever since the May update.

PC: WinXP 32bit with SP3 and all MS updates since;
Intel Core2 X6800 3.25Gb RAM;
BFG GeForce GTS 250 with nVidia driver 260.99, DirectX 9.0
You do realise there is no problem right? That's just how the source engine displays dark areas, it's always been like that.

Its seems, that falling damage depends not on the height, you are falling, but on the time, while you are in air. This causes being in the air even 1 meter high for 5 seconds will make you die.

Bug title: no npc talk
Bug location: the whole game
Bug description: this is an example i go onto the hl2 chapter 2 (red letter day) where you and alex are in a corridor, and she dosn't talk she just looks around and when i go into console it says somthing along the lines of alex/trainstation/greeting missing
But the ai seem 2 work like i can do all the fighting scenes but as soon as theres talking which is to do with the player the npcs do nothing.
I have vista if that helps

Nope, it doesn't use height or time. It's uses speed. The faster you hit the ground, the more damage you'll take. This is perfectly normal as you'll see he got caught on the metal sheet, then got shot towards the ground, which killed him. Basically think what would happen if you were slingshotted down while only a few metres above the ground, you'd still break your legs at least.

That was me playing. I got stuck in the metal sheet, and then you saw the speed I felt. It was like I am falling from very big height. So where I took my speed for deadly squashing? Speed depends on time, spent in air!

Nah it's just a common physics glitch, you got caught in the metal sheet and it flung you out, just happened to push you down.

If I alt-tab out of Half-Life 2 the game hangs about 75% of the time when I come back to it (even in the menu) and I have to kill the process (stuck at 50% cpu usage, dual core).
Is this normal?

Main reason, why I play in window mode. Yes, It is normal for Source.
But you just have to wait. TF2 and GM are long loading, but L4D and HL2 dont have to load long

Bug Description: I first noticed this in my first steam purchase; Portal. When I first grabbed the portal gun, I noticed how I didn't get the Lab Rat achievement. This made me scratch my head. I posted this in the Portal section, but I did not know of sv_cheats back then, so I was majorly confused and everyone was recommending odd things to do, but they did not work. When I got Half-Life 2, I noticed the same thing happening, as I survived the City 17 Strider Battle in the ruins, but I didn't get the achievement, and I realized this was the same situation as Portal. I was very confused by this, but then discovered sv_cheats, and saw that it started up with it set to 1. I later bought Half-Life 2: Episode Two, and the same thing happened when I destroyed the pulse gun blocking the car's way. This is most confusing for me.

Bug Title: messed up lighting and skyboxes, missing shadows

Bug Location - Game Level: Black Mesa East

Bug Location - Map Location: outside the building, the elevator, inside of Eli's lab, the gravity gun training area (possibly other places too)

Bug Description: I just completed Water Hazard and as soon as the game loaded Black Mesa East, the lighting changed: everything was brighter and had very little depth in terms of shading: there were no shadows, basically. I looked up and the skybox seemed to be much higher than it's supposed to be - I could see the bottom "corners" of it.

Going inside the Black Mesa building and waiting for the next load point didn't change anything. Even when I quit out of the game or try to start a new file on Black Mesa east, this problem still arises.

I have a 64 bit Windows 7 system.

1st of all try to check this folder
{YOUR WAY TO}\Steam\SteamApps\{USERNAME}\half-life 2\hl2\cfg
There are "autoexec.cfg" file. Open it with Notepad. Look if there is nothing. This file includes consloe scripts, which turns on every time you launch the game. Directory is same for every game (except CFG folder not in HL2, but In Portal, episodic, ep2)

Bug Description: The ground under the water is glitchy through the view of the water, and you can see where the map ends when turned to the side.

Possible Bug Cause: High resolution widescreen makes it able to see edges of the map, but the water is just glitchy altogether.

Specs: Vista 32-bit, ATi HD 5770, Max settings, 1680x1050, 16:10.

Bug Title: Half-Life 2 AND Episode One Video playback issues

Bug Location: N/A

Bug Description:
In HL2: the intro movie (Valve logo and legal stuff) freezes and stops responding after 5 secs of playback, waiting mouse cursor appears, and if you click the video, it will fade, and Windows will try to send an error report. Though video itself is frozen, sound is intact. Then, while main menu is loading, game vanishes for a brief moment, and restores itself again (though this part of bug tends to happen only in fullscreen mode).

In EP1: The situation is similar, but even worse, as there is Episode Two teaser, which should be showed after the credits. Instead, there is blank screen with sound played as normal. My bet is that these issues are connected.

Affected/proven OS: Microsoft Windows 7
VGA: nVidia GeForce 8xxx, confirmed on other PC too
Further notes: Episode Two doesn't have issues with playing intro.

Had same problrm with Episode 1. You should check your:
Free Space on the Hard Disk, where Windows is installed (C for example);
Size of your [Way to Steam]\Steam\SteamApps\[Profile Name]\Half-Life 2 and Episode One folders If it is bigger, then 1 Gb - delete everything on that folder and restart Steam

Here's my settings (http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/3008/specs.jpg), maxed out of course.

I get constant 60+ fps (kinda weird that it goes above 60, i have Vsync on always)

It says i'm running in a window because i use the advanced startup options "-window 1" and "-noborder", so it's technically in a window, but it's actually covering the whole screen (so i can alt-tab instantly)

If you look on the sides of some of the pics, you can see where the map ends. Look closely.

Yeah.

Only problem, window mode seems to disable v-sync... I'm getting over 100fps on average.

Neither the ingame or the catalyst driver can force v-sync on.
Waste of power.

Had same problrm with Episode 1. You should check your:
Free Space on the Hard Disk, where Windows is installed (C for example);

If it is bigger, then 1 Gb - delete everything on that folder and restart SteamAs i said, Ep2 does not have any issues with movies for me, only HL2 and Ep1. Also, my disc space is all right, and i had erased my profile gamefolders before starting the games yesterday.

Bug Description: Doors, both internal and outside, are mostly missing and replaced by brick walls if they are noninteractive. There IS an indentation where the door should be, so i can get stuck against the door frame if I want.

It seems like it is, seems kinda odd for half the doors on a second or third story apartment to be brick walled.

Got 2 issues, when catching mossman in the locked room with alex, the door to the room mossman is in closes and locks you outside if you take too long to go in. Also I was dragging sentries along with me from the previous defenses, they started shooting at mossman but I stopped them by moving them. But when I got to the room where you rescue eli they shot and killed him then the game script just froze and wouldn't go on.

Being part of the script, I don't think these should be necessary.

Bug Description: I got to the roof where Barney was waiting for me, but had not yet found Barney. I found the crate of grenades, and killed the sniper near the grenades with a grenade. Then I found Barney, and he told me to kill the snipers with grenades. I couldn't find any more snipers. I walked all around the streets in the area, no snipers.

I tried starting from an auto-saved game in the previous chapter, and went over to Barney before killing any snipers, and still had the exact same problem. I believe when I had been down on the street earlier in the game, there was another sniper in a window closer to Barney's position. That sniper was missing. I tried tossing grenades in all the windows in that area, but it didn't help.

Again, by the time I get to the floor where I find Barney, there is only one sniper. And I have no idea what happened to the other one (or more?).

So the game isn't playable at all for me at this point.

Possible Bug Cause: Disappearing second sniper, and script failure to handle it?


I'm logged into https://support.steampowered.com/ and... how do I create a support ticket? The faq entry "How do I contact Steam Billing and Support?" is useless. There is no form I can find.

This is very frustrating.

PC VERSION

Bug Title: No CSAA for nVidia users

Bug Description: There's no CSAA for nVidia users, just MSAA 2x, 4x and 8x.

I can confirm this on my GTX 295 Single PCB.
All other Source Engine games have support for the new nVidia FSAA modes, just not the revamped Half-Life 2 :(

Darxus, you need to climb to the top, get next to Barney. They don't spawn when you're on the floor beneath Barney. The snipers should appear in the windows in from of him, two I believe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's probably like that for everyones, considering the texture doesn't show purple-and-black squares, but instead nothing at all.

Hm... with all the complains and this bug thread sticky being formulated, I wonder if Valve will actually fix these issues or at least make the game as it was before 26th of may 2010... I guess well see about that...

Make's sense, as I'm running a single GTX 480 at the moment. I've found that my old GTX 280 doesn't suffer from this lighting bug. Therefore, when I want to play half-life 2 I run it on the GT200 card.

Would be nice to see this fixed. I'm curious if the GTX 460 is affected.

I got GTX260 and this happens to me too.

Bug Title: Multiple achievements not setting

Bug Description: Many of the HL2 achievements are not setting for me. Example I have the "Heavy Weapons Get the airboat's mounted gun." achievement but not "Anchor's Aweigh! Get the airboat." I also do not have "Trusty Hardware Get the crowbar.". There may be one or two more too. Check my profile to confirm.

Possible Bug Cause: Unfortunately I have no clues...

Bug Title: Lambda Locator Achievement reset

Bug Description: I started a game on the Mac version of HL2, then resumed it on the Windows version. All my saved games were there, and all my completed achievements. But the first cache I found brought up the Achievement counter as 1 of 41 (or whatever the total is). It should have been 30 something.

Possible Bug Cause: Either the Steam Cloud isn't tracking this particular achievement or it is failing to track uncompleted achievements with running totals.

Bug Title: Half life 2 wont launch correctly it ends up showing a screen of my desktop where i cant click anything but the windows start menu.

Bug Location - When Half Life 2 is beginning to load... the valve logo appears (the african american dude with the valve popping out of his head} and then the blurred loading screen and that is where the bug is... my screen starts flickering and then my desktop shows up but i cant do anything but press the windows key so i can go to my regular fully functional desktop.

Bug Description: It cant be my firewall because if i disable it half life will still not launch correctly. Then i have tried Half Life: lost coast and that worked fine.

Reprogramming of turrets does not work as expected.

Alyx announces over the radio that she will be reprogramming the turrets to defend the control room. The turrets do not fire on unfriendly targets, but do still fire on the player.

This happens on the first two of the three incidents dealing with reprogrammed turrets. The last incident the reprogrammed turrets work as expected.

Valve seriously needs to fix this I can't beat the game on hard because I have nothing to help me out.

Those experiencing incorrect lighting on some HL2 levels starting from d1_eli_01 (Black Mesa East) may wish to use this (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1286792) fix. It fixes the maps that had been shipped with the update without ordinary ("SDR") lighmaps thus making HDR into a requirement. Fix had been produced by ljbade (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/member.php?u=701530) by using Source engine map lit tool (vrad). To fix the skybox at d1_eli_01 level when playing with HDR turned off one should go to console and change the value of sv_skybox variable to be "_hdr" less (i.e. - check the value contained in this cvar and remove tailing "_hdr" from it). After this change one should save and reload the game. Skybox would be fixed and the game would again be looking perfect with ordinary non-HDR renderer.

Those wanting to play this game on very old GPU may wish to try to "revive" DirectX7-compartible render mode that had been broken in with major engine upgrade. Details are available at this (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1665227) thread.

Saw a solution for this bug ages ago (soon after it first appeared) but can't remember where i saw it... :rolleyes:

Bug: Buggy can't outrun train on highway 17 bridge

Location: Highway 17 train bridge d2_coast_07

I've managed to beat it just once since the bug cropped up - probably in the most recent update, but i don't know, haven't played the game through in full for ages but i clearly remember easily outrunning the train plenty of times a while back.

The most infuriating part of it is that you seem to clear the train, but then it somehow clips the buggy and launches you 100 feet in the air! http://i55.tinypic.com/2rcu6gh.jpg :o
The only thing i can think of is using the console to skip to the next map, which i have had to do. Sorry if this has been posted before, didn't see it in the first few posts on page 1 or in the last pages.

EDIT: beat the train just then but buggy still destroyed and got the assignment terminated message, just going to give up and jump maps.

Aren't you supposed to back away when you hear the train? You can just let it pass and then continue on your way.

Before you only needed one turbo, and I think you could even get past without using the turbo.

There was yet another bug with buggy in HL2 just after steam cloud support had been introduced. Save games were told to be "auto converted" to a new format at the first load after the update. Actually this "conversion" was nothing more that getting the level name your old savegame was saved at and doing "map <that-recorded-map-name>" at the console. Game would spawn you with moderate amount of gear and all the required stuff at the start of that map. This "required stuff" includes vehicles like buggy and/or airboat. The trouble is that the buggy that you're granted with when first entering road chapter is more lightweight and powerful then the one the game spawns for you at savegame conversion. Same applies to the spawning buggy using console cheat command.

This difference in the buggy physical properties makes it impossible to pass some places in the "on the road" chapter (most notably - a place where you should jump over destroyed bridge with full-throttle and turbo, while being chased by interceptor), and makes it extremely hard to beat the train (you would need to be tricky with timing and use turbo twice instead of once).

Yes, I reported this earlier in the thread (as did a few others). The title screen is also overly bright for me.

I experience this bug on my GTX480 regardless of the driver set used. Using 266.58 presently.

The lighting bug that isolated1 and I referred to in our previous posts is surprisingly not present when I run hl2 on my newly acquired GTX 580.

I'd really like to know why the GTX 480 has so many issues with the lighting since the update.

This is extremely frustrating. I can deal with graphical errors, but when I come across a game killer (I cant progress past the door to the train bridge in Highway 17), I just dont know what to do. I tried reinstalling the game from the disk, which did nothing but waste my time. I tried ignoring the game for six months idly hoping for good news, which was also a waste of time. Why, Valve, why...? The update enabled Mac users to play, and murdered a perfectly good PC game. SHENANIGANS!!

Yeah, since the update it's a lot tougher to beat the train... The key to beating it now is to HOLD the turbo button down. Trust me on this, if you hold the turbo button down and you'll beat it every time.

It is possible to beat the train if you just tap the turbo button, but it's frustratingly hard to pull this off.

Try it out next time you play.

I the chapter "the sandtraps" the map "d2_coast_11.bsp" the event were the vortiguant is supposed to come out from the door to the dead antlionguard and extract the bugbait, doesn't work. The vortiguant just sits in the door way and idles there. You cannot continue through the level. The event needs to be fixed. I have tried restarting it and I wind up with the same results.

I run the PC version of this game.

Bug Description: As you can see by the screenshots, the lighting simply isn't working. That is to say, there isn't any "lighting", everything is simply lit, no shading, no darkness. It even screws up the opening cinematic, Ravenholm, rooms that are meant to be completely dark. Point is, no darkness or shadow anywhere.

This does not, however, seem to mess up the randomized opening menu screen, for reasons I do not know. The light seems to work sometimes, but not others.

Possible Bug Cause: I can only guess. I haven't installed any relevant third-party software (I used HLSS with Team Fortress 2 for a while, but I haven't played it in a bit). The developer's console keeps saying things I don't understand because I'm a gormless bungholio. Here's some of them:

I see no definitive cause, nor do I know enough of what the hell the dev console things mean to venture more than an uneducated guess at what may be the source of the problem. It really kills the mood in a lot of places (like Nova Prospect) so I'd like help with this whenever possible.

I set the turrets up correctly ( upright, facing the right direction, they looked like they were scanning the area etc) but they never fired at the Combine, instead they fired at me when I got on the wrong side of them. I have since been told that Alyx is supposed to reprogram them at some point but I don't recall if this happened or not. I didn't give it much thought at this stage, but it happened again later on when I was given three turrets (in lockers) and a huge swarm of Combine came once I had finished setting them up. They were again no use and only fired at me. It has made progress difficult because the turrets are such a useful tool in this level, but mostly I'm just frustrated that I can't use them like I'm supposed to. I have since gone back to Highway 17 (my only prior save point) to see if I can avoid this bug somehow.

Having the exact same problem, the turrets wont reprogram it seems they just see 'Freeman' baddies. I'm wondering wether this is a Mac only problem?

im running HL2 on a 2007 mac book Pro, and everythings been fine up till now...

can we just have the ant lions instead? cause we're macs, and thats cool isnt it. we can call them... iLions

'HDR Lighting' & 'Motion Blur' don't work despite turning them on from the in-game options. I've got 'Lost Coast' and these two features work flawlessly in it...! =/

Bug Title: Broken Brightness (same problem as KarkasmolenKlok)
Bug Location: Entire game beginning in Black Mesa East. This bug started for me as soon as the BME level started (ie when the game loaded after I hit the water after going through the dam)

mat_fullbright 0 fixes Ravenholm, but not Highway 17. I'm currently at Highway 17 but don't feel like playing anymore if the game is going to look like this. Valve, hurry up and fix your magnum opus.

[Bug description 1]: While typing in the convar: cl_new_impact_effects 1, in the console, no updated particle effects will show, it will just show the decal upon hitting a surface followed by a missing material error showing up in the console for that hit effect.

[Bug description 2]: While in DirectX 8.0 or 8.1, going underwater in the coast maps and looking up, the underwater texture will show up purple and black along with broken lighting ungerwater.

Bug title- strange tree's in point insertion.
Location- in point insertion most of the trees have untextured branches that you can walk through,
Description- I have tried uninstalling the game multiple times, but the problem still occurs, I even deleted my entire steam folder in program files.

Bug Title: Turning AA on results in screen freezing.

Bug Location - Game Level: Anywhere

Bug Location - Map Location: Anywhere

Bug Description: Trying to turn AA on results in the screen freezing with the options menu still up anytime after a game is loaded. If I change it while at the menu screen (no saved/new game loaded) it'll be fine. Have tried several times now and at different levels (2x, 4x, 8x, etc) and it freezes everytime. Only way to quit is get to desktop and end it via task manager.

played Half-life 2 the other day...started a new game, it was fine up until I stepped into the City 17 plaza...what happened to City 17? The buildings are invisible, some parts of the map fail to "draw" and it looks horrid

After a year no change! The worst thing is that even in EP2 I noticed "randomly" disappearing APC(next to the house where you first met Advisor more personaly). But even worst thing is that those who don't have HL2 on Steam and are using just some kind of warez version are enjoying much more better game. No that's a mistake they are enjoying a PERFECT game!!

This happens every single time I try, and I've tried reinstalling the game and Steam, but still to no avail!

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.7 and the latest version of Steam.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Try to delete clientRegistry.blob file or change download region, "...and if that don't work, use more guns..."

The brightness bug got it as well from BME also the Gmans right eye is like totally looking elsewere so he is looking like he was hit by a rock in the middle of his head Doctor Breens reaction to you when you teleport in is still dull and won't move from the chair as well there are no textures of the outside ... atleast the brightness of Breen monitors was fixed.

Though I have purchased HL2, and the episodes, I opt to play the warez versions for just this reason. Though the Episode 2 copy I have has its bugs, Half-Life 2 is pretty much bug free.

I agree, I have been hoping for some kind of an update for a long time. They go through all the trouble to give it this big update but then don't fix the bugs? Kind of sucks, IMO.

The thing that bothers me most oddly enough is Dr. Breen acting all weird when you get teleported into his office at the beginning of the game. I also couldn't complete the second turret standoff in Nova Prospekt because of a glitch, Alyx's appearance just wouldn't happen. I hope this stuff gets fixed at some point. Maybe they're working on a big patch to release all the fixes at once but I'm not counting on it.

For some Reason I was uanble to jump the Bridge on d2_coast_04 using turbo. It now has more weight aswell...

EDIT: But when I create an Airboat with the cheat I can get over there without any problem - and the boat has no turbo...

Bug Title: Traffic noise?!

Bug Location: Point Insertion

Bug Location - Map Location: Outside courtyard/playground area

Bug Description: Ok, it's not a huge bug at all (might not be considered a bug) and may even seem trivial. But it's something that's always annoyed me. Why is there city traffic noise during Point Insertion? You hear what sounds like rush hour traffic with engines going, horns honking. Seems completely out of place and I could only consider it a bug.

Bug Description: After finishing the turret standoff and saving the game, Alyx, which is standing in front of the teleporter, seems to be "going down" at the same speed as the teleporter, and actually sinks into the level ground (it's somewhat funny). After that, entering the teleporter does NOT trigger any animation, so I can't go on with the game (I had to load an earlier savepoint).
Also, it has already been reported, but if you save the game in the middle of the fight and load it, the combines just don't appear, and all you have to do is wait.
Possible Bug Cause: probably some hidden level element that has "trapped" Alyx and is pushing her down along with the teleporter. I still have the savegame saved, in case any developer is very interested in fixing it (which is... doubtful :()

The animated Texture showing Dr Breen's face is overbright, it looks overexposed.
In my case, I had all the game settings on highest quality, and ticked the Bloom box in settings... (if that matters)

There was nothing wrong with the game in the first place. Since Valve updated it last year it's clear to see from this thread that it has ONLY created bugs. The worst thing is you can't even reinstall HL2 and play the original game because it will just update automatically. Bug Title: Turret hostility error

Bug Location - Game Chapter: Entanglement

Bug Description: I first noticed this in the level where Gordon is given access to two turrets to defend against the approaching Combine (I can't remember which point of the game this is in but there were two staircases and the Combine came through a large energy field down below). I set the turrets up correctly ( upright, facing the right direction, they looked like they were scanning the area etc) but they never fired at the Combine, instead they fired at me when I got on the wrong side of them. I have since been told that Alyx is supposed to reprogram them at some point but I don't recall if this happened or not. I didn't give it much thought at this stage, but it happened again later on when I was given three turrets (in lockers) and a huge swarm of Combine came once I had finished setting them up. They were again no use and only fired at me. It has made progress difficult because the turrets are such a useful tool in this level, but mostly I'm just frustrated that I can't use them like I'm supposed to. I have since gone back to Highway 17 (my only prior save point) to see if I can avoid this bug somehow.

I also encountered this bug, but I think I know the cause.

After the scene where Alyx and Eli are briefly reunited and Alyx and Gordon split up, the player encounters a guard room with a concealed air duct hidden behind some shelves. Since this room contains nothing of value, the player is expected to bypass this room and continue to the locked gate at the end of the hall. Only when the gate fails to open does Alyx instruct the player to return to the guard room to look for the hidden air duct.

However, if the player should discover the air duct on their own, before Alyx has a chance to deliver her lines, the bug will be triggered and the reprogrammable turrets will remain hostile.

This solution worked for me. Also, it wouldn't hurt to take this section kind of slow: Don't do anything that isn't expressly obvious until Alyx tells you to. Wait for Alyx to tell you to look for the turrets before opening the container.

Possible Bug Cause: The texture author thought you could use the $basealphaenvmapmask EVEN with a normal map and figured the normalmap wouldn't break the specular. Can be fixed by replacing $basealphaenvmapmask with $normalmapalphaenvmapmask and deleting the alpha channel from the combine_booth_tall01b.vtf and instead using the alpha channel of the normal map.

Bug Title: Alt-tabbing sucks in HL2

Bug Location: Everywhere! From the game menu to the game itself (i haven't test the episodes yet)

Bug Description: It's almost impossible to alt-tab in Half-Life 2 (at least on Windows 7 64bit, radeon 5770). You press the 2 buttons and you arrive to the desktop. Then when you click on the game icon on the task bar to return to the game everything get black and you have to kill the process via the task manager

Possible Bug Solution: Even in HL2: Deathmatch this occurred. But since 29 November update (http://store.steampowered.com/news/6887/), it became the most alt-tab-friendly game that I have ever seen. :)

Comments: Its a really strange bug. When I load the core area, the bug happens, but if I change the resolution to anything else, the problem suddenly fixes itself.

That's selfish. With most Bethesda games the game will instantly crash if you alt-tab. Just to fix this the engine would need a near-total rewrite. I'd rather not waste their time.

Most source games are pretty bad at task switching. Though they rarely crashed on me. (I still save beforehand in single player games)

I just booted HL2.
Alt+tab is instant. (it seems I played the game in a full screen window mode). Works great!

Bug Title: Temporary game freeze when using 5.1 audio

Bug Location - Game Chapter: Point Insertion, Red Letter Day (so far, haven't played further)

Bug Location - Map Location: Occurs every 5-10 minutes or so.

Screenshots: No per-frame graphical anomalies.

Bug Description: Every 5-10 minutes of play, the screen will freeze for a few seconds, then black out for a split second, and then return to the game. I can then resume gameplay.

Possible Bug Cause: I haven't been able to reproduce this problem when limiting audio to 2 channels, which leads me to believe that the 5.1 channel setting is causing the problem. Vsync and multicore are disabled, every other option is maxed out. I've tried disabling various other graphical options but really the audio setting is the only one that has an effect.

My system: Intel 2600k, Radeon 6950 1GB, 8 GB RAM. Audio via HDMI. Running Win7 64-bit.

Its one "loading" before this situation so i suppose it might be d2_prison_07 map. The turret ignores Alyx, Mossman and Gordon as it should, but not Eli. The conversation then stops and nothing happens.

Possible Bug Cause: I suppose its just a simple script bug.

Doors fail to open in Nova Prospekt

Location: Nova Prospekt upper floor, behind the two barred doors (developer console fails to appear for some unknown reason so i'll try to give details if needed for location)

Bug description: The bug I am seeing is that when you flip the switch in Nova Prospekt to open the dual-doors, the doors fail to respond and stay closed. I have no clue as to what is the cause of the issue but this glitch has been persistent throughout saves so I will have to backtrack and hope that it doesn't reccur after that.

System specs: AMD FX-6200 3.8 Ghz-4.1Ghz, 8GB DDR3-1600 RAM, 500 GB 7200 RPM WD Caviar Blue, Windows 7 Home Premium x64, AMD Radeon 7750 1GB, AMD Catalyst 12.6.

Bug Location - Map Location: I don't know the exact name of the map, but it's the place with two corridors, where you have to fight off all the Combine coming in from 4 gates, having 3 friendly turrets, and Alyx is constantly informing about "more soldiers", "we have a motherlode of soldiers coming"..

Bug Description: After defeating all the Combine soldiers with the help of 3 friendly turrets, Alyx says that she's gonna come in "as soon as she can", but i'm waiting more than 10 minutes and nothing happens. No more Combine, no sounds from Alyx. As far as I know she should jump off the second floor of the corridor and start talking to Gordon.

Possible Bug Cause: AI problem?

Title: Turrets Shooting (And Killing) Eli

Chapter: Entanglement

Map: d2_prison_08

Description: Well, I brought the 3 turrets from the previous battle with me into the teleport chamber (theres a clip brush for the turrets on the stairs, but it isn't complete and I got the turrets over it) so I could have more turrets, and when I got there and Eli swung in, they promptly shot and killed him. This broke the map, as he sends outputs vital to the progress of the game. They also shot Mossman, but the setrelationship input was sent before they could kill her.

Cause: setrelationship for Eli isn't sent to the turrets in the map (you could also say that the broken clip brush on the stairs is the problem, but it wouldn't be if they added a simple logic_auto)

Since they're not going to fix it, just open the console and type "ent_fire func_door open". That will open the train door for you. If that doesn't work, type "map d1_canals_02". That will take you to the next map, and you won't miss anything since you're so close to the end of d1_canals_01.

But that requires sv_cheats to be set to 1, thus disabling achievements unless he turns it to 0 and re-loads a save.

When v-sync is on game is not smooth, get 60 fps but it feels like im playing game with 30 fps.
Also minimizing is not working game is crashing with hl2.exe stopped working error.

for the first problem check your fps :\
cl_showfps 1

for the second problem, play the game in a borderless window
add -noborder options to the game, and set it windowed from the game options

Another one I found is there was a looping sound CTD when I tried to go to Red Letter Day.

Half-Life 2 is currently in its worst state yet. And there is still plenty of animation issues and lighting issues that came from the mac update.

Multicore rendering for Half Life 2 is garbage on my i7 2600K. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't enabling something like that supposed to make a game better? Instead I get micro stuttering out the ♥♥♥♥...

Anyway, amazing game is still amazing. Disabling a feature that I thought may be able to somehow improve the experience won't change that :)

Since upgrade to Steampipe, all maps in HL2 are shown in Fullbright. Can't get lighting to work and mat_fullbright 0 doesn't do anything.

I sent in a support ticket explaining how I wasn't happy that I bought HL2/EP1/EP2 in one condition and now they've been changed (with no choice to not update) to a more broken condition, and they responded:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Please follow the instructions below to participate in the Steam client beta which may correct the issue you are seeing:

1) In Steam, click on "Steam" in the upper left, then choose the "Settings" menu.

2) On the "Account" tab under "Beta Participation" click the "Change..." button.

Well i have the same bug as reiketsu. Trying to jump of a tall rock at the beginning and i get the "quaking" sound. Impossible that i touch the sand there, cause im in the air. Also tried getting passed it with 2 wooden planks. Same issue. So i guess its a bug :)
Oh well, w8 for patch and then ille try it again.

Same issue, still happens! I never touched the sand or sandy grounds, but whenever I cross that invisible and glitched barrier/trigger area so the earth shakes, no Antlions appear and the achievement has been bugged already.

This is the area with that tall rock, all went fine yet:

I see a glitch which could also glitch the shaking trigger and so eliminates the achievement:

I jumped on the glitched rock without touching the ground and this shaking was activated. It looks like this invisible barrier/trigger is also in mid-air, not just on the ground. Afterwards I was able to walk back to the beginning ON THE SAND without any shaking and Antlions anymore!!

I messaged support back and told them a Steam Client Beta wouldn't fix the issue (and besides, I was already in the beta.) They posted this in return:

The bugs you are referring to are old and should be fixed over the years up updates and patches.

Please try completely removing Steam and re-installing. You may want to print out these instructions for quick reference.

1. Write down your Steam Account name and password - you will need them to log back into Steam once you have reinstalled
2. Logout of Steam
3. Exit Steam
4. If you currently have any Steam games installed that you would like to keep, please copy the Steamapps folder from C:\\Program Files\\Steam to your desktop or another directory.
5. Delete the Steam folder in the default location C:\\Program Files\\Steam
6. Hit windows key + r ( run at the start menu ) and type regedit
7. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Valve and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Valve (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Wow6432Node\\Valve on 64-bit Windows)
8. Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from the following link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html
9. Run Windows Install Clean Up from the Start menu.
10. Select Steam from the list. The list is only partially in alphabetical order, so be sure to check carefully.
11. Select Remove.
12. Select OK.
13. Reboot your computer.
14. Download and install a fresh copy of the Steam installer from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
15. Run the installer and re-test the Steam client.

Bug Title: Music does not play in half life 2 on Linux

Bug Location - Map Location: All. On every orange box game

Bug Description: Music is set to maximum volume but no music ever plays when it should be triggered. Errors such as this appear in the developer console when music should be triggered.

All other audio is working fine.

Failed to load sound "*music/HL2_song10.mp3", file probably missing from disk/repository

local game cache verifies successfully--so it doesn't appear to be a problem on my end. This issue only occurs on my linux installation of the game.

This bug also appears in my linux installation of portal, half life 1, Half life 2 episode 1, half life 2 episode 2, and Half life 2 lost cost. The problem may also occur in team fortress 2, but since there aren't any instances I can think of when music should be playing I can't say for sure.

Another possibly related observation: In half life 1 The voice of the Nihilanth does not play when it should be triggered on xen. This isn't directly related to half life 2, but it seems to be related to the glitch that is occurring in other valve games.


Possible Bug Cause: I have only encountered this bug on my linux installation of the game. It's likely related to that.

Bug Description: When I get the the part after the stairs (where you kill the third combine) it puts me back to where I autosaved. I tried disabling autosave and different routes around, but I can't get past those stairs without the damn save glitch.
