View Full Version : To whoever worked on lighting in this game...

you deserve to have your eyes slowly burned out of your eye sockets by direct sunlight. because this is what you put the players through with this game. i don't know what you mean by 'style' of graphics, but this style gives me a headache.

i would understand if the game looked like crap, in case of which devs usually cover textures with excessive darkness or light. however ME is a very, very beautiful game. SO WHY THE HELL BLIND THE PLAYER?!
maybe by the name of the game they meant that all buildings are made of mirrors and reflect sunlight directly into your eyes, i dunno.

and the brigtness/contrast settings don't help for jack ****. toning them down only makes the game look dimmer. its like you're still looking at the sun directly but with some dirty sunglasses.
yet i did tone them down a bit, but i didn't know a special treat the devs prepared for me. the sewers and vents became SO dark that Doom3 looks like the most bright game in comparison.

so, unless i toy with brightness and contrast settings EVERY TIME I enter/exit the outside area, i risk being blinded or not seeing anything in the dark. playing this game for more than 15 minutes makes my eyes hurt. literally.

now i know this is a completely pointless post and that everyone knows everything i said and that im more than a year late with it, but i just picked up the game and really, REALLY had to unload all this frustration. i hope in ME2 they either tone it down or at least give an option to disable HDR and bloom

But that's what make this game so special. I personally really enjoyed the bright outdoor environment. I have had enough of dark corridors and dim rooms.

Perhaps it's not as bright on my computer as it is on yours. Have you tried changing the brightness and contrast option on your monitor itself?

as i said, doesnt make it look much better.

but then again - at least they could have kept it for the inside environments instead of making them extremely dark.

you want a bright game? try Assassin's Creed. they managed to do that special lighting which allows all textures to be seen yet everything is so bright that you get a feeling that its really hot ingame.

Mirror's Edge just simply blinds you, doesnt add any special feeling to it

The HDR, and the contrasting colour correction, where what made ME, one of the greatest games for the unreal engine. If you're unable to see the game as being beautiful. Then you've probably got your brightness/contrast settings set incorrectly.

If you're reffering to the over-brightness when you switch from an indoor environment to a outdoor environment. Well, that's just HDR doing its job.

Edit:
Besides, many games/movies based around the future use over-brightening, or darkness as an effect.

If you're unable to see the game as being beautiful.

the answer to that is in my 1st post:

as for 'HDR doing its job' - its OVERdoing its job here. i dont have anything against clean white environments. i am referring specifically to the lighting

Well I've never had any problems such as being too dark indoors.

Are you sure you have the latest drivers?

I think at this point we can all agree on the fact that it's possibly something on your end. Have you calibrated your display settings?

nope, its all the same in the trailers and on my friend's PC. its just the way the game is done. gotta admit that the second half of the game didnt have these problems. well, the lighting was still too bright but at least it didnt have any more pitch black vents.

well, see for yourself:

I like the game's art design. Everything looks so clean and ultramodern.

The second one looks normal to me, but the third one is definitely too bright.

Unfortunately, I just uninstalled my copy, and I don't have the space to install it again.

gosh.. that's THE BEST feature of the game along with the music.
i really wish a lot of games pick up the same style, it's like living in a city designed by Apple

I have no problems with the games lighting. I love all the graphics of the game tbh.

That's really a problem of your PC, I don't remember seeing something THAT bright in ME. I will reinstall my ME once more just to check.

well its not like all my game is like that, i just gave the screens of the areas which have that problem. but it is kinda annoying

Hmm. I'll have to chip in and say that no, my bright areas don't look like that. The second staircase pic you posted is just ridiculous.

Go on youtube and watch other people's gameplay vids, then compare the graphics to your own. Maybe your card gamma is set too high.

Definitely something wrong with you PC/game. Mirror's Edge is not that bright.

This is how it's supposed to look just when you change from a dark environment to a bright one with HDR, just like in real life.
This is just a transition and it should normalize in ~3 seconds. If this is how it looks to you all the time it certainly is a bug.

ok, lets say i picked a random youtube video:

I had to turn down the graphical quality of the game to the absolute minimum in order to be able to play it. It has nothing to do with performance, but rather getting the urge to poke my eyes out when playing for more than 10 minutes.

well, apparently my game is just like everyone else's.

i just picked out the places where its most ridiculous. im doing a speedrun so ill probably post the videos and the names of the levels.

the other zones for me are just like in your video. and that is very, very bright for me

There are indeed some areas where the lighting crosses the threshold and completely washes the textures, but they are far in between and it's only really a problem if you stop to look at it for at least a couple of seconds, an no self-respecting runner should do that!

I think overall it's a beautifully rendered game. I really like how the colors bounce around the surfaces, which is something you don't often see in other games.

Though the lighting is bright outside as it should be considering where you are at, it's not blinding for me and I'm using whatever the default are. everything is sharp and clearly defined. I love the look of the game. Don't know what the problem could be other than drivers or your card. Then again people are different and your eyes may just be more sensitive than average.

sounds like you need a new monitor bro

Aemony
08-12-2010, 10:54 PM
Sounds like you might need to calibrate your monitor a bit. What comes to mind is that you might have Dynamic Contrast enabled on your monitor, which makes bright screens even brighter and dark screens even darker. When I played through ME once with DC enabled I can across multiple areas where you couldn't even make out a single white box from the white floor when looking at it from the front, cool, but forced me to disable the feature.

Run your monitor through the monitor calibration guide in Windows and reset the monitor's settings to the default, and see to it that certain features such as Dynamic Contrast is disabled.

If that doesn't fix it then it's just you having a problem with the lightning style in the game, which for me is one of the most aesthetic and beautiful aspects of the game.

This game kinda reminds me of some Garry's Mod levels with HDR turned on. Such as gms_atoll_2008.
