Since displacements are so cheap to render, would it not make sense to tie all world brushes to a displacement, and use nodraw to seal off the map and prevent light-bleed in some areas?

Well, that's what func_detail is for I believe. Whether or not it's cheaper than displacements I don't know, but it's an interesting question.

Displacements are cheaper per-polygon. They are still more expensive overall.

There was an interesting topic on this I saw a while ago, I may go hunt it down later anyways its simply not worth facing the nightmares of t-junction errors and poor vertex lighting. In addition displacements dont block visibility, and cant be tied to entities but those would be easy to work around.

P.S. Displacements are the lightest to render due to the fact that they are rendered in batches.
