I expected performance to be a little poor, but not this bad.
Anyone else with this model MacBook Pro (ie: 2009 base MacBook Pro) have the same impression of game performance?

I have a 4GB RAM, 2.53GHz model and I'm having lag as well.
I did find a config that raised my FPS a bit, but it's still not enough.

I've got a 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro with an x1600, 3 GB of ram. Basically the bare minimum for running source games, and it runs fine on my machine. (I'm going to assume you're talking about TF2).
There's supposed to be a major Open GL update in 10.6.4 though, so I'd wait to see how well you can run it after that comes out.

I have the same machine as OP, but with 4 GB of RAM, and I get a steady 30 FPS.

It's not very good on my 2.4 ghz 2010 macbook pro 13 inch.
With all the settings down and at native res I get FPS drops below 30 regularly... Will post more later.

Just wait for the Mac OS X update (10.6.4). It will fix your performance problems.
