Guys, what exactly is the link between the GOTY content and GFWL? Being new to GFWL I am really confused.

One user (juliom) has posted -

"You will need to log in GFWL for the copy protection, but it works fine and it's hassle free.!"

Another(Corusath)writes -

"You can just move you saved games into the gwfl section, or just dont sign in. GFWL does nothing other than add achievements and let you buy add-ons"

Yet another (drtran007) pointed out that its part of the system requirements specified on the store page and therefore required.

Required for what exactly? What *IS* the function of GFWL with regard to Fallout GOTYE and the DLC?

Is logging into GFWL compulsory in order to play the DLC? Or does it merely log achievements?

Also, the "game CD Key" is supposed to be used for "Multiplayer" games apparently. But a link I found on another website states -

"However because Fallout 3 is a SINGLE PLAYER GAME, the Live service isn't vital to the game, as there is NO MULTIPLAYER COMPONENT."

If that is so, then what Multiplayer key for? Was MP support added later as part of some DLC? The same site adds -

"At best it (GFWL) simply allows people to record and share their achievements online, get notifications of game updates and get additional Downloadable Content."

As the Steam GOTYE already has all the existing Fallout 3 DLC, is GFWL required at all?

The site also adds -

"Since some users have said that disabling Live has resolved lag and some crash issues for them in Fallout 3, if you want to remove/disable Live successfully, use this G4WL Disabler Mod to disable Games for Windows Live."

The Disabler Mod seems more than a year old and therefore theres no mention of it being compatible with the Steam Fallout 3 GOTYE. Any idea if it works?

Before GOTY, you had to buy DLCs using GFWL. Now, you just buy the GOTY and don't need GFWL.

Thanks for a short and clear reply Amander. Greatly appreciated. :)

Any idea what the "Multiplayer CD Key" is for?

The "multiplayer" CD key is just the GFWL key, in case you want to add it to your GFWL account.
It's not needed, and also has nothing to do with multiplayer. Valve really needs to fix that dialogue.

Another question about GOTY's DLC; when I had the retail copy of Fallout 3 installed, I bought Op: Anchorage. (Impatient me, I know.) Now, having bought the Steam-GOTY version, I still only have Op: Anchorage available. Does the CD Key give me the other DLCs or is there something else I have to do?

You have to activate the DLCs in the content manager, see other threads here. And of course, you have to launch the GOTY from Steam.

Ah, how simple. Worked! Thanks! :)

GFWL is just the pc version of Xbox live it will track your achievments and for me since i have a xbox live gold account it was easy to just merge them i don't see why everyone goes crazy when they hear GFWL. at least they didn't tack on securom or tages onto it.

If you use xbox live, it might seem to be a natural extension of that platform; if you don't, then it is an 800 pound gorilla sitting around frustratingly wasting your time.

GFWL is terrible because it was not designed for the PC, runs slowly, gets in the way, interferes with other programs, adds nothing remotely useful, doesn't work 95% of the time, and is generally a worthless pile of useless tripe. There is no situation I can think of where adding GFWL to a game is an improvement or a good idea.

As a side note, GFWL is almost always an indication of a 360 console port, and few of those are done with any competence.

That's why I used the 'almost' qualifier.

GFWL isn't that bad. The interface of course offers less than the Steam overlay (only messages and achievements, no web surfing) but it's in fact more stable. Too bad their ID system is unreliable, same as with Gamespy.

Nobody has responded to this yet, so I will. Yes, the GfWL disabler does work with the Steam version of Fallout 3 GotY. I use it and it's fine :)

But why do you use it anyway? GFWL is very unintrusive. Just for the sake of it, I created a local profile but it stays in the background and does NOTHING unless I call it.
