I'm getting this same error message.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7
ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
I've tried restarting Steam, checking the integrity of the game, defragging the game, making a backup then deleting the game and restoring and non of that helped.

As much as I want it to be, problem isn't game related. Tried it on a buddies computer with same specs except win 7 pro vs. Win 7 ultimate. Worked fine on his.
The problem has to be local, just can't figure out what it is. Already installed .net 4, and c++ redistributable, both x64 and x32.

Solved it.
Open %Steam Folder%\steamapps\common\puzzle dimension\PuzzleDimension.config in notepad, and scroll down until you see this:
<item>
<first>Render.FullScreen</first>
<second type="traktor.PropertyBoolean">
<value>true</value>
</second>
</item>
Change the "true" to "false", then run the game, and it will run windowed. Then you can change the resolution to what you want.

That did it!

You can also go down to these lines and just set your resolution manually, this is fixed it for me.
<first>Width</first>
<second type="traktor.PropertyInteger">
<value>1650</value>
</second>
</item>
<item>
<first>Height</first>
<second type="traktor.PropertyInteger">
<value>1080</value>

no problem. As an additive, I don't remember what the default resolution was in the config file, but it was definitely lower than my desktop resolution of 1920x1200 (on the primary of a dual-monitor configuration, both monitors running 1920x1200), as I could see my other monitor loose the native dimension when the game tried to go full screen. Maybe the game could just auto-detect the current desktop resolution and use that on first launch?
Pretty fun and interesting game so far. The Steam achievements aren't activating for me for some reason though, don't know if that's a steam issue or a Puzzle Dimensions issue.
Just installed and ran on my laptop, which is also native 1920x1200, and didn't have an issue at all. Maybe it's just the fact that my desktop at home is setup with dual-monitors?

That is quite possible as I also have dual monitors on my desktop that it was crashing on.

Hi all!
There are an update coming, it's being uploaded to Steam as we speak, and an issue with DirectX 9 lost-device scenario during startup has been resolved.
Posts in this thread gave me the final clue about what could be the issue and I'm very thankful for all your support and ingenious hacking of configuration files :)
Cheers,

In the .config file, the default dimensions seem to be 1280x720. I also have a dual monitor setup, so I think that may be the cause. My setup is primary monitor: 1600x1200, secondary monitor: 1280x1024. Thanks much for the find and glad to hear there is a fix on the way!

I'm having a problem where I don't even get an error. The pop up that says launching game disappears after a second and nothing happens. I've tried a few of the suggestion on this page in hopes it would solve my problem but nothing's worked.

Hi,
If you get any problems at startup we would be very interested in seeing your "Application.log" file. Please fill in this form for any problems at startup: http://www.puzzledimension.com/startup-support-form

Same problem here (with Demo program on Windows XP MCE (32bit) / Athlon 64 X2 / 2GB / 8GB free HD space)
Can not find application.log file anywhere in "program files\steam" (sub)folders. Launcher seems to terminate before 'activating' the actual program. No icons or entry in start menu were created for the program.
Will also complete the form that Jesper indicated.
Thanks for any help.

I have the problem with the demo where the app will not launch. Steam says preparing to launch and then nothing. I looked for the Application.log file but its not there.

Yay ... you have same problem as me and you also can't find the Application.log file. I'm thinking they patched the retail version and not the demo?

Hi all!
We're having problems with the demo and Steam not running the install scripts the first time it starts the applications to install the required VC++ and DirectX 9.0 redists.
We are working to fix this but in the mean time you can run the
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\puzzledimension\redis t\vcredist_x86.exe
and then
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\puzzledimension\redis t\directx\dxsetup.exe
which should solve the problems.
Best and many thanks,
