View Full Version : Wasted My Money

Hi, I'm one of the chumps who got suckered into buying this game for $15. I now know why it's that price...
I've literally spent the last hour crashing and dealing with Windows Live Games Bu%l$@it... This game is unbelievably terrible, as soon as the game starts, pushing any key basically besides moving WSAD crashes the game. It's done it 4+ times. :o
Really really want my money back, but since steam can't do that (i think?) is there anyone else who has experienced this problem (the crashing from pushing anything)?

Verify Integrity of Game Cache, a lot of people downloading from their servers right now, something may have gone awry.
Post system specs, so others can help you.
That's about as helpful as I can be, maybe someone else can help you once you post your specs.

All files verified.
System Specs:
ASUS G2S Notebook (yes yes, haha a gaming laptop)
Video: NVIDIA 8600M GT (256) drivers updated before I started the game.
Running Windows 7 32bit
I was just able to play about 1 hour before the game suddenly crashed again. It seems not because of button pushing now. It's random I guess. It just pauses for a second and tabs to my desktop, (the game is still running and I can hear it in the background) but I can't go back from my desktop to the game.

Games For Windows Live is terrible and never should have happened when you buy this game from Steam. Totally rediculous.

I have a similar problem.
I just deleted the game and I am downloading it again because of the windows live feature. It won't let me complete an ID. It needs to "download an update" which seems to crash the game. When I start the game up again I have to go through the same routine with the same results.
So I'm trying to get a fresh download now. If that doesn't work I'll just forget it. I can afford to loose 15 dollars but I do now understand the hate talk that I have seen expressed by some for this title.

does it have something to do with gfwl trying to update the game? before even tried to start a new game, i logged in to my gfwl account in game (when i was still in the main menu), and it told me right away to install some update, well i followed it, and it seemed to install something and wanted me to quit the game as it was installing, so i did it. When it finished updating, i started playing the game , and it's been fine this far :)

Yes. I don't have an existing Windows Live account however and during the process of trying to set up that first Windows Live ID to get the save feature working in the game it asks to verify the Windows Live update whereupon the game quits and I have to apply for an ID all over again when I restart the game. It's like some kind of endless start up loop.

When you say "crash the game" do you mean the game freezes or it actually exits out? The update should cause your game to pause for a bit, then it'll go back to the menu and then you exit out and restart.

The game actually quits.

After doing some research I found this maybe it'll help:
try "run" "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive \Updates\5454085c\Content\Setup.exe" /f "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\bioshock 2
and here's a link to some other fixes:

Thanks but my fresh download works the same as before.
The game runs well minus the save function.
Windows Live can not access any profile that I create.
I presume that is what is required to activate the save function.
The game is useless to me without the save function.
I wonder if anyone else had this problem.

Man am I glad I didn't buy this game. I enjoyed the first one but it had so many bugs that I figured they would fix for the second game so I won't buy it. Looks like I made the right decision. It's really a dam shame.

How to save progress in BioShock 2 with Games for Windows Live offline profile
BioShock 2 is a GFWL (Games For Windows Live) branded game. As some of you might already know, saves in most such games are managed by the GFWL system itself and you usually need to be logged into a Live profile to save/load in-game progress. But what if you aren’t connected to internet all the time, don’t have an online GFWL account or if you don’t want to be logged into GFWL for some other reason? Don’t worry – this doesn't mean you can’t save progress. With the use of a Windows live offline account, you’ll be able to save/load just fine. Obviously, it doesn't require an internet connection to create or log into one.
Launch the game. Open the Windows Live menu.
If you are already logged onto a profile (local or online), sign out (Create profile button will only become visible when you aren’t logged into anything)
Click on ‘Create new profile’ button.
In the dialog box that pops up DO NOT hit continue. Hitting continue will take you to a registration page for an ONLINE profile – that’s not what we want.
Once in the ‘Create Gamer Profile’ window, scroll down so that you can see the bottom paragraph.
Look for the hyperlinked ‘create a local profile’ link in last paragraph. Clicking this will allow you to create a new offline profile.
The method above will work with any game based on GFWL 3.1.

Lol. GFWL isn't an issue in Dirt 2. Something's wrong with its implementation in this case though. The game has launched maybe twice for me and now I can't sign in without a crash.
Annd funny enough, I try to get the "update" that Biosh__ 2 has been harassing me about using Dirt 2 and there is no freaking update. WTF is up with that..?

I assumed that the update for GFWL was for the multiplayer Bioshock 2 game. If you do not need the multiplayer game then you should not be missing anything if you bypass the online GFWL by using the offline version.

When I first got the game, downloaded and installed, ran it for an hour and it was fine. Next time I went to play, crash. Wouldn't start. After looking at the Forums here, found out, what you have to do is first off, verify the game files (which turned out fine) then, delete the save games folder from your "Documents" folder. Next, go to the GFWL site and get the latest version. No patches, get the latest one. Game has run fine for me ever since, and I'm now on my third playthru.
GFWL worked fine for Red Faction: Gorilla and Section 8, but not this game.

The offline GFWL that I am using as described in post 14 here is working well also. I am not interested in the online game. so I am not about to erase my long list of game saves. But for the others that need the multiplayer function can you give the download link for the GFWL site?

Spent the better part of two days looking for this - Worked GREAT - Got some extra Windows Live log-ins now, maybe they'll work better on the next game. Thanks Frosty!
