COD4 Modern Warfare PB outdated

Just bought the cod pack on sale, and I really want to jump in to the multiplayer for Modern Warfare.

As opposed to receiving an updated version of PB via the downloading process, it appears as though I have received an outdated one.

I have patched it through the website "http://www.evenbalance.com", but even then it fails to initialize and continues to tell me it's outdated.

Which files do I need to have PB up to date, and in order to work properly?

There was some updater on evenbalance where you select your game, it found the directory, you pick the Cod4 multiplayer icon or w/e, and then it updates to the currect version.

Download and run their PBSetup program. Point it at your Call of Duty 4 directory and tell it to update (you can update other any other PunkBuster games you may have at the same time). Sometimes PunkBuster can conflict with background applications; I've heard of it kicking people for running programs like RivaTuner and D3D Overrider, and even less intrusive things like media players. If you still have problems after updating manually, then make sure to disable unnecessary background programs.

Yeah I noticed that the game kicks me for having steam community in-game overlay, I've always known punkbuster to be one of the least effective anti-cheat clients out there. This sort of adds to that, but anyways the client downloaded from the website worked fine.

Wrong. Hackshield for Nexon's Combat Arms is the worst. It doesn't ban: it just kicks you out of the game so you know if the hack you are using is outdated.

Run CoD4 as a admin, it won't complain about that.

And i always see PB kicking people from CoD4, and if it doesn't the admins do :)

I think VAC is much better than PunkBuster. Not only will it ban in waves, but it updates by itself.

Ehm no VAC doesn't update by itself, Valve members does that.

What I meant was that us gamers don't have to go to a website to download the latest update for VAC, unlike PunkBuster. VAC can't automatically make updates for itself. If it did, then it would fix MW2.

I did exactly the same thing that the Op did. I downloaded the 'new' PBSetup version from the website. But whenever I get to choose the game title from the dropdown list, there is no game in the list! This happened to me last week when there was yet another updated version, but somehow the game names appeared after trying for a couple of minutes. This time it isn't working. And why the hell do they update Punkbuster 10 times in 1 week??? I can't play this damn game without cursing with PB for hours on end every bloody day!!!!

yep getting the exact same problem here.. it worked. (or didnt) a few times at first..

Even though pb said it was updated and it was working etc MW just refused to recognise it.

So now Ive got a game I bought, ONCE AGAIN STEAM lets me down by letting me buy a game that I cannot play, they refuse the usual refund demand..

and noone fixes it!

thats TWO IN THE LAST WEEK. BlackOps wont run at any playable rate. MW1 wont let me play on any server due to PunkBullS**T!

Come on. Is it SO HARD to just request a game I can actually PLAY?! CS:S worked FINE with VAC.


Has anyone got a fix for PB? I would like to go and play this online with my mates!

I just play on non-PB enabled servers. Although there are many empty ones in COD4, there's a group of them under fatalforces.com that are full pretty much constantly. You can have Steam running without getting kicked, and hackers are banned pretty quick off them.
