View Full Version : CdKey is not of a Retail type

took advantage of the buddy program/1.99 sale thing but when "a friend" tried to activate their trial they got the error "CdKey #### is not of a Retail type". I of course have removed the cd key from the error code. all of the other accounts "my friends" activated worked fine. the odd thing is when logged into the steam account linked to that cd key "my friend" can't right click and "view cd key" like i can on my steam account AND when "my friend" goes to manage game account the cd key is displayed different in the address bar, there are no dashes separating groups of 5 characters. anyone else with this issue?

What do you mean? The number of characters doesn't match? Also, bit of a thread hi-jack, but do you think it'd work for me to buy this off another Steam account since Steam won't let me buy EVE again, and apply it to a different EVE account, my alt?

lets say i have 3 friends. I sent them all buddy invites to eve. they activated trils. i then bought eve for them all via steam for 1.99. they all logged into steam and right clicked on eve online and "managed game account" and used that page to upgrade their trials. i got 30 days free for them upgrading from a trail.

BUT one of my friend's cd keys is displayed differently. normally they are displayed as 12345-12345-etc but his is just 1234512345etc there are no dashes. and when he tries to upgrade it fails. even tried adding the dashes. it's the right amount of characters.

and the really really weird part is eve says i all 3 of my friends upgraded even though he actually has not. oh and the steam support page doesn't even think the key is valid.

what does that have to do with anything. of course he can it's a trail account. my problem is he can't upgrade from the trail to full by purchasing the game.

i got it to work by logging in on a different pc. on that pc eve wasn't listed as a game in my library. so i went back to the gift email and tried to request the gift again and it worked and give me a totally different (and correct) cd key with the dashes and everything.
