When I start the game, the screen goes black for a second and then gives me this error:

I've tried reinstalling it and verifying the integrity of the game cache, but it didn't do anything. Any Suggestions?

There's a little readme in your steamapps The Void folder with an FAQ.. maybe this is relevant:
Q. The game crashes with the “Can’t load engine library!” error.
A. Make sure AGEIA PhysX is installed. You can find the distributive on your game disk.

So this game requires PhysX? I'm running an ATI Radeon HD4870, so I can't play the game? That would have been nice to know before I bought it.

Using an ATI graphic board does not prevent you from installing PhysX. It will not benefit from any hardware acceleration (like with a nVidia board) but it works.
I am using an ATI HD 4850 Mobility and I have no issue with PhysX.

That's a completely different error message.
Loving this game, but getting it to work pissed me off. I had the latest Nvidia graphic and physX drivers and it worked just fine right after I installed it (played it for a couple of hours even). Come back to it today and I'm getting the engine library error message. Had to uninstall the latest physx drivers and and install the ones that came with the game. I hate it when PC games just decided to stop working for no reason. :(

CPU PhysX not GPU PhysX.
Install PhysX software. You can play the game just fine and it'll run the same as an Nvidia user.

I am having the same problem. I have a 5870 and I just updated my drivers to the latest version. I had a more recent version of phsyx than the one in the game's folder. I have had problems before where having different versions of phsyx can cause problems in other games installed on the same computer that use phsyx. I uninstalled the version I had and installed the one from the game's folder and I still get the same error message as the OP.
I went to this site and tried forcing the game to run with dx9 but still the same problem.

You may find a solution in this thread: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1335103 (look at post #6)

These options only apply to Source engine games which is not the case of The Void.

I followed the instructions and was able to get the game working, changing the cache path location made the difference.
I went to the icepick english forums and found this.

It is concerning the game not working correctly with computers with more than one processor. They suggested using runfirst, but I was unable to use it, when I tried to open it it did not stay open, also I could not find a place to add the suggested file path in the program properties, any help with getting it to work would be great, as other older games may have the same problem. Also I tried making a .bat file but the computer says imagecfg is not a recognized command. I am using windows 7 64 bit.
I was wondering about the command lines if they worked with source games only, I saw that the second time I read the page. Too bad that is the case.

Runfirst is a command line utility. To use it, you must create either a shortcut or a bat file with a command like:
RunFirst.exe [Program to run]
You cannot change directly the shortcut created by Steam for a game (the command use a steam://rungameid reference)
If you prefer to use a program with an interface, you may try THG Task Assignment Manager (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/bang-dual-processing-buck,815.html)
