I get the error and the game wont start, I tried deleting clientregistry.blob, disabling my antivirus and installing the piece of crap "games for windows - live", but it still gives me that message. Anybody have this problem?

Jeez, it's not as if they were taking up space in a warehouse, thus needed a limited quantity to be manufactured? What's preventing them from running off keys as if it was going to sell like Modern Warfare 2?

It shouldn't be difficult to obtain more keys. The publisher (Strategy First) are the ones that give the keys to Valve.

Jeez, it's not as if they were taking up space in a warehouse, thus needed a limited quantity to be manufactured? What's preventing them from running off keys as if it was going to sell like Modern Warfare 2?

Nothing. Since MW2 is a Steamworks title, there is no need for a CD Key to be generated for it if it is bought through Steam.

I just finished downloading FlatOut and got this message when I tried to run it; it does seem odd that Valve would only be supplied a limited number of keys right away; it's obviously a popular game; perhaps more popular than the publisher thought it would be. I just hope that they send more keys soon so that I don't have an unplayable game sitting on my HD taking up space forever. :P

That's probably because you got it early enough to get a CD key before they were all gone. And I hope you're not taunting everyone who didn't get one, because that's just a jerkoff thing to do. :P

It's a good thing this game uses Games for Windows LIVE, for a change. It uses universal keys for its games, so you can always substitute one from another game, and on top of that, the keys are generated by Microsoft. It'd be a bit of a lost cause if it didn't use LIVE, since the developer no longer exists... I don't think Valve could get more keys if they tried.

You guys need to calm down, as I said before it's at the very least going to take a bit longer for them to get new keys for this game. I'm pretty sure the game changed hands into a different publisher, and that keys haven't been produced for this title in a long time.

I guess we need to use our imagination. Let's pretend that this is a pre-order, and it will unlock in xxx days. Now imagine it was released, but now it's been delayed for one reason or another. Now let's go to the forums and start a thread asking why,why,why,..when, when, when. Maybe we'll get an answer. Maybe we won't. Oh Crap!! That's already been done. Anyway... "why,why,why...when,when, when.

I really dislike all the people that tell us to "calm down". If we calm down and not argue issues like this, the quality of service will go down.

Now these kinds of errors really are unacceptable. When you put a game that costs 20$ on a 90% sale, you have to be ready for the surge of customers. And especially since you cannot return the games you purchase on steam, the games better as hell be playable.

Hopefully issues like this will not arise again.

Did you read the thread?

I haven't posted anything on the Steam forums until this time and went to the effort of retrieving a password to say that I think your brief comment is rude and inconsiderate seeing as we are paying customers that bought something that does not at this time work.

Currently, the product is still for sale with no notice that it won't work for anyone that is purchasing it.

To tell a customer "Did you read the thread?" meaning: did you wade through 5 pages of Steam user gibberish to see a post by a valve employee that briefly and vaguely says: "We're on it", is completely inconsiderate.

Whoever is in charge of selling this product should at least make a simple thread that a) explains the situation, and b) is clearly visible to anyone that has purchased the product or is considering it.

Oh, also. Monkeys like bananas.

I just think that if you offer games for download you should let folks know the status of it rather than allowing them to pay YOU..you get to have your money and I'm left confused until I finally get on the forums and am finally told by someone rather than being clueless.. The new steam design has a news page they could add a bolded note on there or something but no.. I had no idea for quite a while.

I am allowed to complain about something I paid for. That's like going to a store, purchasing a box game and going home to find out that it's missing it's key, they could have told you at the store but they wanted their money so you were left in the dark. ;)

I can't believe so many of you have not looked for the fix on the internet. I posted about it last night, but it and all the posts that referred to it were deleted, presumably by a mod who thought it was against the rules.

This time I will not explicitly say what to do.

Use an exe replacement that would normally allow you to play your LEGALLY bought game without having it being in the disc drive. Remember, this is not piracy, you bought the game.

If you do not know what I am talking about, ask someone, just not on this board.

I read about your "fix" last night but it was too late and I had to go to bed... does it work for online? Because if not then I won't bother xD

Thanks anyways though ^_^

IF we have no CD-key - this means we don't have the hole game. This means that STEAM/Valve is committing fraud for knowingly selling unusable piece of software.

So they sell something that they don't have. Why don't they give the Key right when you buy the game ?????????? What if I buy this game and i install it after 2 years from now, when all Keys are sold? They have to make another 1 just for me, so more time to wait.

I don't usually post about stuff like this, but I'll make an exception.

What's incredible to me is the fact that we can't even start the game. The game isn't JUST multiplayer, it has a single player component, as well.

What they should have done is..allow players to launch the game, play singleplayer, THEN when they want to, start mp and then if there are no keys left, "Failed to contact key server" would pop up. Sure, that would suck, but at least everyone can enjoy single player.

And yes, $2 is only $2, but that's not the point, now is it? People really do have a right to complain, as we are paying customers, especially with no warning on the main games steam page.

I understand that Valve is doing everything they can to get more keys and I'm sure everyone is grateful for that, but a warning should have been displayed as soon as all keys have been depleted. That would have been nice. And I would have still bought the game.

Also, as a side note, even though there was still a little over a minute left, the deal ended and FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage went back to $19.99. I think they should have waited until the sale ended for all the games. Shatter, among others, also went back to their original price before the sale officially ended. I was going to buy FlatOut for a friend(since he was unavailable) but now I can't..at least not until the game goes back on sale.

Anyways...enough ranting...hopefully Valve will get all this sorted out soon! (And still, Valve + Steam = Awesome, regardless of what happens)!

That could have just been a bit of lag, I don't think anything underhanded really happened there. What's one minute out of 24hrs?

Yeah, I don't think anything underhanded happened either, but there wasn't any lag. I actually restarted my computer, restarted Steam and there was 1:30 left on the Steam sale clock. I think like 5 games was still on sale, while the rest went back to their original price. I think what happened was..they met their quota for those games and decided just to revert 'em back to their original price. I still think they could have waited a minute-thirty until reverting 'em back.

But that's the way it goes I guess.

How about you have some patience? You bought your game, you've legally got it installed and ready, and the only thing you need is the CD key. Valve will have it within the day, hopefully, and then we can all play. It's not their fault nobody expected the keys to suddenly run out.

You spent $2. It's "unacceptable" that you can't play for a period of 1 to 2 days? Get over yourself, you act like you should be treated like a king for spending $2. Valve said they're working on it, so how about doing something else for the 1 day this will most likely take?

Asking to be delivered the product I paid for is not the same as asking to be "treated like a king". It's basic customer service. The price is irrelevant, and as people have said earlier, it speaks to our confidence in the service provider. How do I know the same won't happen when I drop $50 on the next game? Would it be less acceptable then?

It may be only $2, but I'd still be upset if I spent that $2 at Taco Bell, and got home to find an empty bag with an IOU note inside.

Lol. Completely agree with what you said. Some people will continue to defend anything. Steam could slap your mom in the face, and people would say, "She should have gotten out of the way. It's not like she killed her, geez.". I'd be more paranoid about what's going to become of our games 10 years down the road. We dunno if Steam will even exist then...

I'm not mad also. The savings is still worth the wait for me. Until then, I have my other 100+ games to hold me over. So yay for Steam just for having a great reason to login for the week!

Well i don't ask to be treated like a king, nor is the 2$ i paid collapsing my personal economy, but are you saying it is UNREASONABLE to be irritated that you bought a game but did not receive the key to play it WITH the purchase? And that it could take anything from a few days to a week before you will be able to?

Please, take off the VALVE-coloured goggles and see it for what it is: a blunder, and the consumer (that's, y'know, you and me) have the right to be a bit miffed.

Now if Valve speedily fixes this, hey, i'm happy, but it's doesn't erase the event, and from what i'm hearing, it's not even the first ime this has happened (first time for me, though). They should revamp their store so that you can no longer buy a game without the ability to play it. Or should we, in the future, look at Valve as someone who does not care about people who are not spending top dolla'? If so, i'll be more than happy to spend my coin somewhere else.

I don't care how much I paid. It is digital distribution and not having the product ready at the time of launch is shameful. The fact that it is STILL not available is beyond shameful and is reaching completely moronic incompetence. It is also sad I had to peruse to the forums to find this. What about all the people that bought this that do not know about the forums? Do they just eat the money with no game? I bet that happens a lot. I was going through the HORRIBLE support docs before ending up here. The error message from steam should relate to the problem at hand. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Believe it or not, just because something is delivered to you digitally, doesnt mean that you get things instantly. Valve or Steam had to buy enough keys that they can take care of people who bought the game after they ran out,in addition to people who bought today or will buy in the future.

And this happened a few days ago with FUEL, it happened to other games in the past. In all cases, it was resolved. The 'gimme now' mentality isnt gonna get the game keys out any faster.

It took me an age to download because the Steam servers are slow as constipation during sales then I click play and realise I may as well have pirated a copy because all I got is the game with no key. I'm just thinking of all the moms or kids that bought this and just think that they're screwed. There is no excuse for this and heads should roll.

I came here to post this message as well. It appears most people see the $2.00 price tag and shrug the issue away and treat the paying customer as if we are being a bunch of crying babies. This does not include the rabid Steam/Valve lemmings that believe they can do no wrong no matter what issue takes place. I want to support Valve and the digital distribution movement, but this issue just shows the companies involved are not ready. I have been a member on Steam since 2006, and while this is the first major issue I have had with a game bought via Steam, I will think twice before pulling the trigger no matter how great the sale is. At the very least, I believe those who are affected should receive a free game worth between $2.50-$4.99.

I would also like to add that the moderating in this thread leaves much to be desired. Insulting customers is the last thing you want to be doing in a situation like this. I am sure you are just as frustrated as we are, but there is never an excuse to talk down to people. I was an Online Forum Manager on two separate occasions for major gaming sites and there is no way I would have allowed such blatant disrespect.

NO HATS FOR THE STEAM MARKETING AND PRODUCT RELATIONS DEPARTMENT!

Seriously quit whining, Jesus. I really feel for the guys at Steam right now with all you whiny teens who spent the last of their paper round money on a game that was released almost 2 years ago. You can't even get the game second hand for that much.

If it helps, just pretend your Aunt told you she is buying you it from the Amazon stores if you put $2/1.50/2 toward it, and you're waiting for it in the post.

I came to this post looking to see what the craic was because I am waiting for a key too, I got the information. I got some entertainment too, jackpot. :)

For all you complaining "oh I bought the game, I demand I have it NAU! Valve are offering a game they can't give keys out, Valve should fix their games!" seriously, shut up. Read the ToS for consumer rights, Valve didn't make the game, nor can they produce the keys unless... Ah man epic thread is epic, I love these! xD

Alright, always the same shiz talk "OMG I bought that extra-cheap game and I have to, can you imagine it, *WAIT* to play it ! This in unbearable, I want a refund NOW !"

...

Why did I even bother looking here ? Same thing happened when I bought Fuel, took a few days to get fixed, and for every single day that ellapsed there were some pissed off guys who couldn't stop ranting about how bad it was, how it was unacceptable, always comparing with other completely off-topic exemples...

Well, yes, this is a tad bit disapointing. I wanted to play that game tonight and just can't. Bummer. I'll play something else, it's not like there is a shortage of good games...

Anyway, just my two cents : if someone can't stand to wait a few days for some extra-cheap goods, they deserve to have the back of their head beaten with a stick. Repeatedly.

I recently bought a monitor for my wife's PC, it costed me almost 200 , it broke for no reason after a few weeks and it took several MONTHS to get fixed. Meaning that in the meantime we had a whole computer completely unusable. Now that's annoying. But not being able to play a 2 game for a few days probably is one of the most accursed woes ever encountered in mankind's history, and I am missunderstanding it because I'm too stupid to see how utterly important it is, most likely

In the mean time, imma play one of the 10 other games I've bought during the sale for ridiculously good prices. Steam is the very very best when it comes to digital distribution and I can easily put up with a bit of a wait for 1 of those games to be playable.

"...it is important to explain the tactics behind bait and switch. Basically a retail store, entices you with a low price to get you in the door and ready to buy, but once the purchaser goes to buy you find that you need to upgrade something to buy it, or the product is no longer in stock and the alternative product is much more expensive. The online version of this is much the same..."

I wonder how many folks signed up Steam accounts for this and the other two such instances previously. Also, why no notice of there being no keys on the sale page - because that would have cut into sales (profits) of the game, which is useless without the keys that they don't currently have...

As for the volunteer moderator that likes to insult paying Steam customers, I think I'd revoke his status - one good customer experience will only gain you one loyal customer, but one bad customer experience will cost you 10 customers.

I've already seen games that I previously bought on sale even cheaper on subsequent sales, so coupled with this most recent experience next time I'll hesitate before pulling the buy trigger ~ caveat emptor...

Gamerking, read the Terms of Service agreement. Please.

freakshow - of course we deserve consumer rights, but Steam are only distributed a certain amount of keys for games. Now, if you want to apply for a job, working at Steam to produce a web-app which tracks and keeps tag on the amount of keys that are stored, distributed and erroneous. The web-app must put out a notice to the news page for the game in question (for the dude/chick who bought it to play with their boyfriend). Hell, while you're there, develop a desktop widget that informs us of sales and "last-chance-to-grab" deals.
