I read somewhere that the Ati 6000 series will be coming out early 2011, so is it worth it to wait to upgrade my current 9800GTX, or should I upgrade now?

What games are you currently playing, noticing lag, other specs, etc...?

BC2 can get a bit on the choppy side while running through smoke, and bits of intense action on low. Its mainly future games I'm concerned about being able to even run smoothly.

I'm a firm believer in getting what you want when you need it.

If you are always waiting for the next best thing then...you will always be waiting. When the 6xxx series comes out they will be talking about the Nvidia 5xx series, so on and so forth.

If you were to get a 5850 there wouldn't be any game you couldnt run in the next 4 years. For instance I'm still using a 4670 b/c I don't have any reason to upgrade. When I get a reason I will get whatever is great at the time.

I completely agree.
I run a 4770 because all I play are Source Games and I get 250-300fps on average and it's amazing. :)

I agree with Notavirus, there's really no need to wait another 6 - 8 months for the next best thing, because there's always going to be something better. The minute you buy a computer be it a laptop, desktop etc, it's going to be obsolete eventually. I would get the best thing you can right now with the money you have. If you want to go Nvidia, I would say go for a GTX 465, it's the least expensive (until the GTX 460's come out) and still offers good enough performance to play a lot of games at 1920 x 1080 including BC2. For ATI, 5850 would be the best but the 5830's are still quite good and are now about $70 - $100 less!. Any of those would be quite faster than what you have now.

that's pretty amazing *(cough)* I don't get that with my 5870 and 3.6 Ghz cpu at max settings.

back on topic.. no point in waiting as noted above. There's always going to be something new around the corner.

Then you are doing it wrong. Games that use the Source engine are best enjoyed when you are far from the action and staring at sprays on walls. That or the fancy skyboxes.

The 6000 series won't be out for some time still, so you mine as well look into getting a newer card. I'd recommend the 4890 for DX10 or 5770 if your running Windows 7 for DX11 support. Once the 6000 series comes out, pick up one of those and sell off this card.

6000 Series will come late 2011 probably around the sametime as bulldozer. The south island series will be a slight performance boost over current generation cards but no new architecture. So you can either wait for 6000 series or wait for South Islands (Not 6000 Series) or buy now. Depending on if you like to upgrade yearly or not I guess is what would decide for you.
