I was having the same problem as a number of other steam users, namely that the game launched but the first load screen after selecting a new game stopped responding and I had to kill the process in the task manager. Happened three or four times, was getting really frustrated. The next time I launched the game, I left all the display settings at the very low default settings, then started a new game. This time it loaded fine. Once the game started I was then able to pause and change screen resolution, game detail, post processing etc with no problems. Worked for me, hopefully other users will be able to do same.
