It's not really being supported anymore; the big update has been "in the works" for around a year now (I suppose that's not happening anymore?). I can't imagine it being a big money maker for valve at this point in time compared to their other and upcoming games.
I know the community has very little influence on these sort of things but given the circumstances, I think it would be pretty cool to see DOD: S go free to the masses and return DoD to the popularity it once had with 1.3+

I don't see it happening anytime soon. If DoD isn't free, DoD:S won't be either.

Come on! It was only 2$ recently. Still some people are gonna buy and this money will go as salary to some Valve workers.
Anyway asking a product for free, that you gonna kill hundreds of hours in it.. It would be ok to ask for some mod, but not for the classic game.

DOD:S came "free" when you ordered the silver or gold package (got the silver one), that was a whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile ago if anyone actually remembers, it was during steam's original launch.

I imagine valve meetings go like this :
Gabe : Ok guys, portal 2 is wrapping up and its looking great. It looks like we're going to have a bit of free time right after the launch. Anyone have any ideas?
Matt : Well, as you know, dods has been maintaining a strong player base for the last 8 years and could use some polishing. In fact, there are several bugs and map fixes that we already have sitting here, we just need to spend an afternoon testing them and we can ship them. Hey, if we have a few extra cycles we can always give it a nice touchup; I'm sure the players would really appreciate that after all this time.
Gabe : Matt, shut up. What have I told you about dods? Did you not learn anything while working on tf2? You know what, you're out of this meeting. Get out. Next time I see you you better have a new spy hat for me.

i doubt gabe goes to meetings lol, one of the perks of owning a successful business is NOT having to do anything
EDIT: if he does his response would more likely be
Gabe: ...What's dods?

From the looks of all Valve did for DoD:S with the Palermo update (I think that is what it is called) and stats (which are really broken) Valve did, at one point REALLY care about DoD:S. It's a pity they lost most of that care, and now spend all of there time on TF2 (I love TF2 though).

It would be very nice if Valve would update this game. They left it with alot of broken stuff. It was only $2 the other day, so that would of been the best time to get it.

No, I've never heard of TFC or TF2...
TF2 was not always free, I bought TF2, ...and so did a lot of other people. So, your argument is flawed.
The only reason TF2 is free now, is because Valve is still making money off of hats and other community-made items.
DoD:S has no such thing, never has ....and probably never will.

The picture is also about seven years old.....
Yes Valve should make day of defeat source free for all half-life2 owners.
Will be a good way to boost the numbers of this dieing game.

Even that was rushed , they bought a community made map an added to the game and ported to the new engine .
Valve did a crappy job with Day of defeat source, everything on it was rushed since early development , bad beta testers back then didn't helped
This game deserved better , community deserves at least bug fixes and proper hit reg , because its the community that its keeping this game alive

The amount of custom content already added, SourceMod support, it just needs a few tweaks adding extra gameplay modes and it would be a nice free download.
Its a Yes from me.
