View Full Version : Activating my Flashlight crashes the game! - 07/06/10 update

Title says it,
I've owned this game for a little more than a year now, and i have never had this issue. But when ever i turn on my flashlight my game will crash! Instantly!
Its very odd, i have tryed a game cache check but that did nothing, so for a temp fix i remapped my flashlight from "f" to "KP_5" so i wouldn't crash my game out of habit. Is this a common issue? It just started happening to me today.

It is because of an engine update from CSS and TF2. Which applies to DoD:S also, apparently CSS gets crashes from flashlight too. It will be fixed soon, this is a major bug so it should be tomorrow.

Thanks for the response! It hasn't happened to me since that update, unless another engine change happened today that was applied to DOD:S and CS:S as well.

It's the second time Valve has let this happen, too. Quite ridiculous.

Did the DoD:S update fix it today?

There was a ninja update last night. (Meant for CSS but it affects us too)
Servers and clients.

It happens with CSS too, it was an unintentional error from Valve. It will be fixed in another engine update soon, I assume.

As far as i know it's the dynamic shadow effect that causes the crach on clients with directX 10 graphics cards and over, anyway, to fix this. Type this in console:
r_flashlightdepthtexture 0
This will turn the shadow effect off, and hopefully this will let you use your flashlight without any craches ;)

That's stupid. Then there would be no reason to have the new engine update. xD Since that's the only effect that I can see, other than having to play in a lower resolution.
Also, you can do that by putting the setting to Minimum or Low on the Shadow or Shading effect in the Advanced Settings.

There are alot more new features and changes in the orangebox port other than the shadow effect. However, isnt it smarter to only fix what is causing it? without lowering the quality on other stuff? I dont understand your point, it's nothing stupid about it.

the reason it happened twice is because they're trying to fix it for css and tf2, while adding it as a quick-close feature for dods, so you can exit really fast and buy tf2

I assume you are joking? Valve isn't trying to break their games to increase sales on TF2. (Ignore what I just said if you were joking)

To be honest it might not be far from the truth....

i was half-joking, it wouldn't be to increase sales on tf2, it would be to increase sales on any of their products :) but most likely because they enjoy coq's epic posts about dods' failures

It is the farthest thing from the truth. Valve owns Steam, Steam is required for games like MW2 which is one of the most popular MP FPS games right now. They get money for every game sold on Steam, which is a lot of money. And seeing as how Valve is a small company, there is enough to go around. Valve tried to do something good for DoD:S and failed, which is true but just because of that is no reason to think that unintentional mistakes are trying to get you to buy Valve's games. I also feel obliged to mention that Valve's most expensive game is 29.99, and then they have 3 games that are 19.99 and the rest are 10 bucks and below. Not really expensive gaming for a money hungry company now is it? Either way I know I can't convince the DoD:S community of any of this stuff, they have their own opinions and I respect that as much as they respect mine.

so CS is doing it too... & i was playing it like a week or so ago just fine
so it's not from the 'new update' but some small recent adjustment after it

It is apparently fixed. I will confirm this later once I have finished dling and playing TF2 Engineer update. And I will test it for CSS aswell. (Apparently alt-tab bugs are gone too, can anyone confirm this? if so THAN AMAZING)

flashlight's fixed...i'd have to start up my laptop to test alt-tab bugs since i don't get them on my pc, but valve says they're fixed so...either they're fixed or they're half-♥♥♥ partially fixed
