A hot problem

I have a 4870X2. Vista 64.

Even after setting the fan manually to 100%, when I play this game (the demo), by the time I reach the magician level, the temperature of the car surpasses 105C!!!!!
It's a beautiful game, but not even Crysis pushes the GPU so much, wtf is going on?
The problem is not the temperature on its own, but that it causes artifacts etc and makes it dangerous to keep playing.

Try updating to or regressing to the Catalyst 10.5 drivers, they're great with Trine.

Anyhow yeah Trine makes GPUs run hot, and the difference to other games is that Trine uses relatively little CPU, so that means that the graphics card doesn't need to wait for the CPU, and thus they tend to churn out so much stuff that they start overheating...

There's at least one thing that will help:

- Open the console with the F8 key
- Write "/render_max_fps 30" and press enter (without the quotations but with the forward slash)
- Write "/show_fps 1" and press enter

It should now show the framerate in the upper left corner and it should stay at 30.

If you are comfortable with it, you can always try underclocking the GPU's speed in the ATI Control Panel, but I'm hoping that the trick above helps enough.

Thank you. I have uninstalled the demo, but I will re install it later tonight and try this.

I can't get the console to show up.

So I just tried vsync but apart from occasional freezes in movement, nothing changes, gpu reached 108C and I quit the demo.

I then tried disabling Catalyst AI and forcing vsync. The performance was bad with spikes in frame rate, but the temperature was back to normal.

Next I tried disabling Catalyst AI and turning off vsync. The performance was better but the temperatures were getting over 100C again.

Good thing I currently don't have the money to buy the game or else this would be very annoying.

I use Catalyst 10.3 and plan on using them till 10.7 are released.

Hmm, sorry to hear. I did some digging and found out that the demo doesn't support the game console (F8). :( In theory you could probably add the "render_max_fps = 30" line somewhere into the config\options.txt file but at this point I'm thinking that it might be too much effort if you're not that much into the game. Let me know if you decide to give it a shot though.
