Hello everyone this is my first post here. I was also one of the $5 buyers of this game and like many here, couldn't get the game to work without crashing constantly! So, thanks to the free weekend of Serious Sam, which I tried running as well but was told to update my drivers, it took me to the NVIDIA page and I updated it easily. Now RFG works! HORRAY!
(or so I thought)
When I start a new game, after the cutscene, where it is just the main character and his brother talking, I try to walk out to start breaking stuff but it just doesn't work...it should be noted that for whatever reason the main characters clothes are going all crazy, like all over the screen, like it can't process it right? I've tried multiple times to get it to work but he is not budging.
Even more unusual is the fact that the Wrecking Crew and the Bonus missions work just fine! They run smoothly and I can do everything like I should. But as soon as I start a new game it gets all weird and I'm paralyzed. What gives? Am I not pushing the magic button?? Any help would be appreciated. ;) thanks!

Now when I try to play the bonus level, it crashes about a few minutes in! This is ridiculous, I have downloaded many Steam games in the past with ZERO issues like this. I think Steam or THQ or whatever Red Faction company needs to get on this...whenever I look for help on the site it just brings me to their new Red Faction sneak preview for their upcoming game...
It's very frustrating...I would love to have me $5 back but Steam doesn't do refunds do they?

Try putting -nod3d10 in your launch options for the game.
By that I mean (in case you don't know) right click the game in your list, click properties then click "set launch options". Type -nod3d10 in there and click ok.

I had the exact the same problem.
My specs are:
Processor: Core 2 Duo T8100 2.10GHz
Memory: 3.00 GB
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Video: GeForce 4800m Gs
Driver V:257.21
When I started the game it was very slow (but the cut-scene was fine) so slow that by the time Alec Mason's brother (forgot his name) starts to walk the dialog is over.
So the first thing i did is to read all there is on the matter, and try it all. So here what helped me fix the problem.
1) I upgraded my video driver from 152.14 to the latest version (257.21) which made it substantially faster, but was still slightly slow on frame rate.
2) I forced DirectX 9.
Try putting -nod3d10 in your launch options for the game.
By that I mean (in case you don't know) right click the game in your list, click properties then click "set launch options". Type -nod3d10 in there and click ok.
What made it run perfectly, but it didn't fix the problem with the main characters clothes and I still couldn't move.
3) My game started in the windowed made, and lots of people say the windowed mode helps solve multiple glitches, so i didn't change it back to full screen. After I tried averting and give up, I though to post here saying -"I have the similar problem" I decided to take a screenshot sowing that the plane that suppose to be in the sky when "Brother points at the sky" wasn't there. So to make a better screenshot I terned the "windowed mode" on "false" And to my surprise the game started to work.
Conclusion:
1) Update your video card drivers.
2) Force DirectX 9.
3) And go full-screen.
Hope it will help you too.
Sincerely.

I played this game for a couple of hours without any issues a few days ago. So today I went back to playing it, and I've had problems ever since:
- There seems to be a general lag, the game just doesn't run smoothly anymore.
- When big buildings collapse the lag seems to get worse to a point where I only get 3 or 4 fps.
- My character's coat seems to glitch sometimes. It stretches all over the screen and what not.
I tried setting the thread priority of the game to Low, but that didn't help. I will now try to force DirectX 9. It's so strange, because the game worked absolutely flawlessly on the first day.

I believe starting the game up in windowed mode will help with the game not accepting the keyboard inputs.
If your game starts to slow down, might help to restart your computer, if that doesn't help much, try turning down the shadow detail, that seemed to help me, and didn't seem to affect visual quality at all (as far as my eyes were capable of seeing).

Windowed mode fixed it for me
