View Full Version : Pre-Loading?

Since it's a 2.5 GB game... And it's a free game... The servers will get some hard work to do on monday if... you do not allow us (players) to pre-load the game
A pre-load would be cool :D

Yes, please.

Peewi

Yeah, pre-loading would definitely be handy, considering the Steam download servers are often nearly killed when something big comes out.
I think a free Valve game out of nowhere counts as big.

They're probably either not finished fixing the kinks or worried that everyone will take the preloaded game too early via GCFScape and circumvent the launch with another game app.

Pre-loaded GCFs are usually encrypted/protected, or just the binary files like TF2 (in the tf2 preload you could get the models early but not the binary files).

If they protect the binary, I can't see any other problems related to preloading..

who would be dumb enough to steal a free game?

You can steal something that's free?

You can torrent it so you can play the cracked version on cracked STEAM that will probably have a virus in the .exe, if you really wanted to.

So technically, you are stealing(but nobody is losing profit I guess).

In the end... A WINNER IS YOU.

LOL.

Not to mention if they do that, less people would be stck waiting for the servers to clear for another day or so.

I'm hoping for a preload too, though I'm not expecting it. I haven't seen preloading available for any games for a long time. It would be helpful for me though, since my internet's rather slow so it'll take me several hours to download.

Posting in support of a pre-load. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't ready for pre-load when it was announced, but oh well. It's going to be hell on the servers considering it's a free game that EVERYONE will be downloading.

You can change the servers you use. I used a South Korean download server when TF2 failed during the Engineering boom.

Yes its possible, just need to find the right one. Then your download speed would be reduced depending on how far away it is.

Like i said, this won't happen if the Pre-load isn't including binary files like dlls, .exe, just materials, textures, models, sounds, etc..

Last year we were able to pre-load another free game that was released on steam last summer (i'm talking about America's Army 3). So... pre-loading it's not just an option Valve! :D

Well, if steam servers don't crap out under the heavy demand, 2.5gb won't be a problem as it is pretty small.

Then you realize they'd be doing it tomorrow during the pre-load anyway making it indistinguishable from release day. Enough already.

Viper45
07-17-2010, 06:15 PM
Ummm.. I don't think the demand for this is going to kill the servers. It may be free, but it's a much lower-key title than games you would expect to cause server problems (like L4D2, Portal 2, or the accumulative downloads from the Summer Sale a few weeks ago, etc)

I bet even if they don't do a pre-load, there won't be a problem. The downloads might be a bit slower than normal, but not by a whole lot I'm guessing.

There are other free source mods out there... but to be honest this mod has a LOT of history behind it and a lot of anticipation. It won't be like everyone downloading Call of Doody at once but it'll cause a hiccup I'm sure. All in all I'd love to be able to download it SUNDAY... ya know, so I could play it Monday?

Just thought I'd point something out.

If I can pre-load the game when the game is released, that is not preloading. Preloading means downloading the game data encrypted before the release and then decrypting the data on release day.

Double bumping for even greater justice. Come on Valve, we want pre-load! There's multiple people in my network that want to get the game and play it at the same time.

TrinityKei
07-18-2010, 11:20 AM
I think there won't be a pre-load really, I mean, if we didn't get it till now, not much point to get it anymore. Game is out in 24 hours, so while a pre-load would still be nice, its much less likely.

Not everyone has a Kill3r connection. (Haaaa, see what I did thar?)

And when you have to download it with 3 people at the same time shared over a 10mbit network, it could take up to 3 hours...

So then have only one person download it, then copy the .gcfs or .vpks or whatever this game will use to a shared network folder :)

Pre-load to...why and whom exactly? Pre-loading is generally done for games that are pre-order. This game is free. If everyone pre-loads, the server crash issue will be the same anyway!
